born out of frustration, "a vogue for freedom"  is a vocal performance piece that situates black gay/queer/trans*/gnc bodies at the center of movement making while also contemplating/imagining new/otherwise worlds (sans police) through performance. politicizing the house ballroom chant, it constitutes a new form of prose placing civil rights freedom songs, protest chants, and negro spirituals over "the ha dub rewerk'd" by dj mike q. in the spirit of house-ballroom commentators, "a vogue for freedom" invites the audience to a new kind of protest -- one that calls for the 'kidz' to 'carry', dance, and celebrate fiercely. 

further, it serves as an embodied critique of the ways in which traditional approaches to demonstrations, protests, and critical thought are respectable, ableist and queer/trans-phobic. It's a track for the kidz, for allah my comrades out in the streets marching and protesting all over the united states, for the vogue divas, for the folks who are fed up, for the folks who are looking for a way to creatively release their anger and rage in response to black death and genocide, and police brutality.

this, too, is a meditation for black lives. it is an invitation to dance and celebrate black lives and a nod to allah the freedom fighters -- past and present.
