Category 4 is a monthly broadcast concept from Michael Brunner [ @four4 ] for Great Circles Radio.

Each episode is broken into four segments, which are connected in some fashion, but routinely unique in many others. This allows for the drawing of comparisons between otherwise disparate concepts, while simultaneously creating enough creative restrictions to focus the musical selections.

The 20th episode comes to us from Berlin by way of Detroit legend, and one of my personal DJ heroes, Derek Plaslaiko [ @plaslaiko ].

We invite our listeners to guess these categories during the show.
As an added incentive for participation, the first person to guess the categories during the broadcast will be eligible to win a prize. Each month brings new categories and prizes.

The theme for episode 20 was -- 2xLP Songs by Album Side

From the artist:  "When Mike asked me to do this mix, I thought it sounded like a fun, yet potentially challenging project. I kicked around a handful of ideas, but the one that stuck with me was "what if the mix was composed of nothing but songs that appear on 2xLP's? And, what if I only used songs from Side A on Chapter 1, and so on?" So, I pulled all my double LP's that I have here in Berlin, and started a layout. It immediately became a super fun endeavor! I also recognized that it was an extremely nerdy concept, but I truly wanted someone to guess it. With that in mind, I took to using songs that most people knew in hopes that the listener might think of where these songs were placed on their respective albums. People who know me best know that I've been a life-long obsessive when it comes to the concept of an album format. Like, the actual programming of an album, the way the songs run together in their respective order, etc. So, like any good DJ set, I wanted this collection of songs to tell a story somehow by programming them using the format outlined above.

Unfortunately, I messed up a bit and had to alter the final archived mix just a tiny bit. When compiling the mix, the Aphex Twin song that was supposed to be in chapter 2 got moved to chapter 1, but that was an easy fix. The other issue was that I used "My Body is a Cage" by Arcade Fire in Chapter 4. While that song is the final song on the "Neon Bible" LP, it falls on side C because side D is just an etching on the vinyl and contains no music. DOH!!! So, in the interest of sticking to the theme, I removed it from the mix entirely.
