With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there’s no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard’ Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism.

Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards’ turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit’s Packard Plant. 

An intimidating force behind the decks, he’s known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only.

For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit’s Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks.

Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it’s me. My one music that I’m passionate about. Love.”

Nomadico’s Gentefication EP is inspired by the Gente-fication movement in East Los Angeles. A movement striving to uplift and maintain the local street culture without selling out to real estate developers and so-called Gentrifiers. The A side tracks “Gentefied” and “Semillas” are deeper, uplifting tracks with a hi-tech edge. The soundtrack for young barrio coders, digital artists and community organizers. On the flip “Graff Walk” and “The Heights” are grittier Techno-funk workouts for bumping loud while rolling down Broadway or Cesar Chavez Avenue in L.A. Yaxteq will continue to honor high tech urban innovation that goes against all expectations. Si se puede!!

Los Angeles based Nomadico releases the first record on his own label Yaxteq. The music on this release sums up
10 years of work with Underground Resistance and sets the tone for what is to follow on Yaxteq.

"Resistance is not Futile" is an anthem for the do-it-yourself, grassroots philosophy that is the core of Nomadico
as an artist. The lyrics state, "We will not be clones, we will not be assimilated" over a shuffling, grinding
bassline. The song's moody atmosphere, simultaneously dark yet uplifting, provides the listener with the
soundtrack to continue the resistance.

"Cabrakan" is a storming Techno funk track that builds and builds. Inspired by the otherworldly sounds of the
Red Planet label, it's a roller coaster designed for peak time dancefloor destruction.

"Romero's Echo" builds around an almost industrial level bass synth driving its way towards a manic synth lead.
The breakdown features a Spanish minister preaching about staying grounded amidst the challenges in life. The
title is a tribute to the revered Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador.

"After The Anger" is a direct descendant of the Underground Resistance school of aggressive Techno. It's
distorted bass and funked up hi-hats move in and out while synth pads and percussion go along for the ride.

El Coyote returns. DJ Dex and Esteban Adame combine their talents for a couple of fresh productions with latin, jazz and deep Techno influences. Pure dancefloor magic on this one for prime time. Dream Dealer takes inspiration from the legacy of Sueño Latino and E2E4 but with a modern bass heavy thump. Esteban's chords lock in the groove and DJ Dex freaks the synths leading up to Esteban's soaring solo. La Frontera is darker and moodier built upon Esteban's hypnotic funk. DJ Dex builds up the strings and adds a melodic hook.

Fans of Helena Hauff's storming Cover Mix from earlier this year will be familiar with @lockedclub and @privatepersons. She certified Locked Club's 'Baikal Boogie', from 2017 debut EP 'Forever Punk' on Private Persons, as "BANGIN'" when selecting it among her tracklist of ferocious electro. 

The balaclava-donning Russian production duo and label are now linking forces again, with a five-track EP titled 'Svoboda' landing on November 9. The title translates as 'Freedom', and refers to the struggle clubland faces to exist in light of governmental attacks. They cite the raids and shutdowns of Outline Festival, Аrma17 and Rabitza in their home country, as well Kiev's Closer, London's fabric and Tbilisi's Bassiani from further afield, as influencing the rallying energy of this EP. 

This manifesto of fighting for freedom instils an intensity that surges through the record. The title-track is a blistering mesh of distorted textures, hard-hitting percussion and call-to-arms vocals from Vadim Seleznev, who demands we "value the moment of the rave" among his searing flow.

Underground Resistance is probably the most important Detroit record label since Motown: their sound and attitude emerged in the early '90s as the most uncompromising one from the Motorcity, it was pivotal in shaping US and European Techno, started the resurgence of 90's Electro, but most of all indelebly marked the consciousness of thousands of people around the world who share their messages of resistance and hope.
And last but not least, they did so many amazing records!

So, 30 years has passed since UR-001 came out in 1990.
Since UR and 'Mad' Mike Banks were so influential for me, not just sonically but mostly on the attitude side of things, I decided to go thru all my 12"s and make a retrospective tribute mix to celebrate this anniversary.

At first I wanted to pick 30 tracks only and keep it compact but so many great ones were left out.. so I just started and at the end I used 60+ tracks! Almost all the classics are there, plus a fair share of lesser known tunes which really shine as well in my opinion. All from the UR catalogue only. No Z-tracks unfortunately :)

I really hope to have done justice to their sound, and I hope as well that the listeners will enjoy the ride, have the chance to discover some amazing music, and maybe feel the energy and pride and love that Mike Banks and the UR crew put into the music and pressed into the grooves.
