GTG Premiere | Bassil - Lost [DSDGTL024]

Border One’s fourth contribution to Token Records is an ode to the cosmic, an ever-present theme in the Belgian’s acclaimed career. ‘Strange Attractor’ takes techno and applies Border One’s bubbly modular sound glossing over thick drums, weaving through sound design destined for sophisticated sets on worthy sound systems. Calm and collected, he offers yet again his attention to detail and devotion to effect. 

As an introduction, ‘Strange Attractor’ presents a gripping story. Displaying sustained tension, he takes his time to reveal his channels. Forcing the listener to settle in and anticipate, the elements diverge and converge over the space of six minutes, shifting groove throughout. A return to calm, slightly uneasy control helps us arrive at an influx in energy for the rest of the project. Moving along to ‘Astral Plane’, we are introduced to more extroverted sequences. Boomy through fluctuating synth lines and stomping claps, the seasoned producer uses the size of his design in the low end to justify a more erratic arrangement. Spread noise in the background interweaves with confronting synth work, making ‘Astral Plane’ impressive in weight without losing the intricate quality that its producer is known for. Opening the dimension of the project through far spread elements, ‘Time Dilation’ creates linear focus with a cloudy entourage. An always club efficient throbbing main synth persists through an exciting structure, highly resonant transitions whip through drum machine patterns, making the third track on the record nothing if not a nail biter. The shuffle of the hi hats does nothing to slow down the energetic peak of the EP; we find Border One confidently in control of layered machinery. Drawing the project to a close, ‘Fractal’ blinks through persistent tension. Linear rides and drones open and close with each transition, making for a bent atmosphere of intrigue. With a sturdy rhythm dotting along from start to finish, the tonality of Fractal makes it the perfect final bow to grasp Border One’s intentions and the universe he puts his work in.

The presented EP by Newa was created during pandemic times, in isolation, when artists worldwide had to give up their basic needs and look for new opportunities to express themselves in complete deprivation. A transformation into a physical vacuum was required to regain the balance—lost in the face of an existential dilemma. Each composition is an artistic embodiment of metamorphosis and temperance, a sonic manifestation of a continuous process, an improvisation with an arsenal as limited as people's actions under isolation. “Equilibrium” describes and discusses the universal issues for humankind arising from sociocultural and psychological contexts and does so in the language of music. With its rhythmic cadence and frequency components, this record acquires an almost tangible form that goes beyond all the limits of perception. The accompanying energy of sensations, cognitive processes, and new consciousness inspired by the discoveries transform into a single story of four tracks, where each carries a feeling of undisguised sublimation as the ultimate source of creativity.

The release explores the subject's relationship to the environment and how a modern soul interacts with large-scale cataclysms, of how one might confront the darkness and what will be one's armament in the face of the new (the latter in this case, not being derived from the old); How does the inevitable need for expression arise, amidst a chaotic storm behind unchanging behavior, and how is this storm reharmonized if the recipient body and mind belong to an artist? How is the balance achieved, and when is the equilibrium reached? These rhetorical questions are best thought through by listening to this record, as frequency is the leading instrument and minimalistic phrasing naturally follows the stream of consciousness.

The remix of “Equilibrium” belongs to Peachlyfe, a Danish musician known for their anarchist spirit, blending the rave rush with a drive of queer resistance to intense experiences. In the remix, the structural blueprint is strengthened with a gentle and meticulously measured interpretation; the care with which one artist approaches the story of another is clearly visible. Similar to Newa's personal experience, a middle ground between transformation and balance can also be noticed here.

“Equilibrium,” on the one hand, tells a very intimate, individual story and, on the other, echoes the challenging task this era has set for itself—the need for action and evolution despite the loneliness, emptiness, stillness, and emotional contention of the environment—all of this being a uniting force, bringing the listener into one big community; “Equilibrium” responds to a person's ability persisting into active development through a repetitive and monotonous context. Harmonious syncopes and airy fragmentation within the monumental framework are a metaphor for this, preparing not the destruction of an immovable internal constitution but for simultaneous change.

This is the right time for you to meet MNTR, a 23-year-old DJ from Ljubljana who is known for her dark rhythms and tremendous energy. She's a dance-starter with throbbing techno sounds. MNTR started DJing roughly two years ago, motivated by her passion of electronic music. Prior to that, she was a musician who played the piano and guitar. Prepare to lose yourself in her carefully chosen tracks, which will undoubtedly cause you to move. We were so happy to give MNTR a platform to show her capabilities and we will with no doubt work more with her in the future.

It's been four years since Efdemin last released a full-length, but the Berlin techno mainstay is set to return on April 13 with Naïf, a hybrid album/mix CD. The record features 29 tracks of previously unreleased music from both Efdemin and a bevy of collaborators (e.g. Marco Shuttle, Gunnar Haslam, Steve Bicknell), and ahead of the LP's arrival we debuted the hypnotic melodies of "Love" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.
