Another week, another track premiere… but is it truly just ‘another’ track that bubbled up onto the top of this appending queue? I feel I know the work that goes in by composers. No matter if the track is short of stretched in time. Each little note, each pad evolving in its frequency band. Each slight adjustment to the volume curve, to carry forth the story in dynamics. Each atmospheric treatment with the reverbed textures. Each painstakingly placed sound in the stereo field – front, back, and center. Post-processed, mixed, and mastered; listened to on every speaker; then played and listened to again, again, and then some more, until the music feels just perfect for the only one who made it. And what about the others? Will they hear the small details, the carved out, guided path, the melodies that pierce the harmony in places, the melodies that hold the message of the piece? Who’s genuinely listening out there, consuming and appreciating the endless time and love poured into music? I know that I am. I hope you hear it too…

This is the sixth full-length for Bordeaux-based Franck Zaragoza, appearing, once again, on the beloved n5MD under his Ocoeur moniker, under which he’s been making music for over a decade now. The album embraces sound design with its melodic side of synthesizer music. So all the knob-twist-junkies of the analog and software emulations can marvel at the output that’s much more than just another jamming-late-night-sink-hole of their time. Here, Zaragoza brings it all together into a single cohesive package of an album that seeps with inspiration from its every nook. The sound is rounded and gentle, in many places very vital and organic, and then is structured in the architecture of complex rhythmic twists [check out “Glow” on the full album when it comes out tomorrow]. Meanwhile, the concept comes in with a message, of slowly fading and receding from reality, into our anti-social, virtual, and ego-feeding worlds.

Twenty Years Away is a compilation with over two and a half hours of music. The collection is to commemorate n5MD's 20th Anniversary.  All proceeds will be donated to the Cystinosis Research Foundation to help find a cure for one of the rarest genetic diseases, Cystinosis. This collection features 31 tracks from the current n5MD roster and alumni to showcase the label's experimental electronica roots, electro-acoustic, leanings, and penchant for widescreen ambient.  Twenty Years way will be out on November 6th (Bandcamp Day) as digital download or stream.

Subheim adds a new chapter to his catalog of shadowy raves with ΠΟΛΙΣ - the fourth long player, arriving in October 2020 on Denovali Records. Pronounced "Polis," the Greek word for "city," ΠΟΛΙΣ doesn't so much evoke the rapid cadences of life in a modern metropolis as it does the unspoken tension between longing to escape and being trapped in some kind of concrete stasis - living together with millions of souls in an expansive emptiness.
 
Subheim uses ΠΟΛΙΣ as a vehicle to depart from traditional songwriting structures, crafting each track as a piece of a larger sonic collage. Songs come out of nowhere, abruptly come to end before they even get a chance to start or introduce new motifs and surprise reprises long after we expect the next track to cue up. These stutter-start forms reflect the four years it took for the record to take shape: a series of failed musical experiments, indecision, balancing an unstoppable creative drive with the unavoidable emotional ebb and flow of life.
 
Though this is clearly Subheim working at a new level, listeners will recognize the sound of ΠΟΛΙΣ instantly as his, with both hints of the IDM/electronica of Approach era and the unmistaken human element that is present in all his work. The natural, off-grid time feel of the record is effortlessly augmented with field recordings and found sounds, this time around with the addition of more grit and power, and with heavier use of analog synthesizers.
 
Despite the album being born out of a feeling of alienation from one's surroundings, it's impossible to ignore the sense of hope that runs through this LP. In ΠΟΛΙΣ, we hear an arrival at a deeper understanding of oneself, an inner peace amidst the decay and a cautious optimism that comes from someone who just happens to feel most at home in darkness.

This is a melody that keeps recurring. I think one of my older pieces might have used it, but I'm not sure... I'm losing track of the details of my past. Produced in Bitwig Studio.
