Canine Rising is the moniker of Devon singer/songwriter Stefan Lewandowski.  His love of music began back in the early 90s, playing gigs in the back-street pubs of Birmingham, seeking out like minded musicians who shared his passion for music.  More than two decades later and many things have changed, but the passion for music has remained strong.  The interim years found Stefan pursuing other passions, dedicating his time to animal welfare, conservation, and woodland management.

After a very serious road accident, it became regrettably obvious that he could not continue with the welfare work that he had been focused on for over twenty years.  Instead, the city life was traded for a cottage in the Dartmoor National Park, providing the right environment to again focus solely on music.  From here, Stefan begins to carefully constructs his songs, from the initial thought through to the finished product.  A process, he says, that is slow but always rewarding.

Stefan on his motivation to create:

“I love every minute of having an idea and watching the song grow, but I am also driven by an overwhelming urge to express frustrations, to fight back at injustices.  I can rant and rave for hours, but it seems that once I put those thoughts into a song, it is like finding a safe place for them to live.”

To which he adds, somewhat tongue in cheek:

“I’m not brave enough for public speaking, nor handsome enough to be a rock-star, so I have to get people to listen to me somehow.”

Musically, Canine Rising does not mould to any genre or particular formula, but rather each song is an attempt to create the ideal vehicle for the emotion or opinion that is being conveyed.  It acts as a therapeutic way to try and make sense of the things he sees in the world around him, such as “greed, inequality, selfishness and the many conditions that infect humanity.”

The new five track EP from Canine Rising is Back A Step.  The title track features a laid back 70s groove, offering a calm and relaxing vessel for what is an angry and emotional tirade.  Lyrically it reveals a frustration that history seems to keep repeating itself, but no-one seems to notice.  Elsewhere the EP tackles the word manipulation of the media (‘Take a Story’), the overwhelming nature of mental health issues (‘All Locked Inside’), and its impact on those around us (‘Back of My Mind’).
