The origins of Front de Cadeaux can be traced back to a dating site for bears, some ten years ago. After Maurizio had spotted a Felix Kubin poster on one of Ugo’s pictures, the two started chatting. Very much intrigued, Ugo invited Maurizio, who lives in Brussels, to play at a festival he organised in Rome. Shortly thereafter Maurizio became a resident of Ugo’s Subwoofer night, one of the first bear parties in Europa that existed outside of the mainstream bear realm. The two bonded over food of course, over their belief that dance culture is rotting from the inside, and even more over slow, heavy electronic music. You have to picture it: a flat in Brussels, a table with empty bowls and bottles, thick smoke and these two daddy dj’s listening to stacks and stacks of UK rave and breakbeat records on 33 instead of 45 rpm. Testing how deep and sexy these garbage records sound at a pace the bears can actually follow without dropping dead – Ugo & Maurizio baptised it ‘supreme rallentato’. Photo by Caroline Lessire.

Aboutface is back live on Netilradio.com to present An Ocean of Ink season 2 episode 1 of – D3stiny: a surreal sonic narrative based on descriptions of dreams from the collective unconscious, using music selections stitched together with creative writing and live improvised music and sound design.  When the word ‘d3stiny’ is written lucidly during a dream, it initiates a pseudo-reality personalised game experience to fulfil the objectives and complete the game. However, the closer the dreamer comes to completing the game, the more they will start to identify the game as their waking reality, causing disruptions, side effects, and the blurring of all unconscious-conscious realities. This game experience is hosted by Dream Creator 17 (dark_e_r). Time to re-enter the manifold! ✨💤✨

SE02 EP1 An Ocean Of Ink – Aboutface pres. D3stiny (live/DJ Hybrid) Netil Radio 1-2-23

I recently graduated from the  SEMA Music Production course by Santuri East Africa. Sketching Sounds is a complication of 2 sketches I produced, wrote, mixed, and mastered for the course final project.

The process behind the tracks:

1) To The Sun -
For the course final project, 1 of 2 assignments entailed producing a sketch in a genre we are not too fond of, familiar with nor inclined to produce/perform. The genre I selected for this sketch was a deep house.

2)Take The Moment -

The other final project assignment required a sketch that incorporated culture and experimentation. From this sketch, I drew from sampling culture as a basis for creating the sketch's foundation and shaping a unique narrative which I did so by repurposing my own vocals from past unreleased projects, ambient soundscapes, and punchy drum and skit samples from some of my favorite artists (sampled in this sketch are Feel by Jacob Colier and Lianne La Havas, and Rafaels prayer by Sault).

For experimentation, my process of composition was guided by the approach of "a piacere" which is an Italian musical phrase meaning “to your pleasure/at will.” - a philosophy on musical expression where some aspects of a song – such as tempo or dynamics do not need the performer to follow the rhythm strictly. With this approach, in class, we were challenged to create a sketch without a metronome. To work around this limitation I began the track with a sample of a simple yet strong drum loop which I used to hold count and establish a starting pulse for the sketch.

Jesse Futerman takes to the Sounds Of Beaubien Ouest (SOBO) imprint for the first time to release the 'Waterzone' EP, which features the smooth grooving house ballad of a title track.

Futerman linked with a collection musicians in Beverly Glenn-Copeland on vocals, Chris Edmondson on saxophone and Stacey Shopsowitz on bass to showcase a new side to his artistry with the 'Waterzone' EP. The result is a collection of three tracks that fuse intricate organic arrangements. As a whole, it's an incredibly beautiful release, one primed for a summer dance.

The 'Waterzone' EP is set for release August 24.
