With his last EP offering on Keinemusik, &ME displayed himself once again as supplier of anthems that easily reconcile style with general floor purpose. You would think, such an universal and inexhaustible tune as this very “After Dark” can only be a lucky hit. But no, he’s knocking out the classic material just like that. Another example? Catalog number KM028, his brandnew “Trilogy” EP.
The titletrack on A initially places a synth arpeggio behind a kick that in dryness is hardly to excel. The beat of "Trilogy" is then seasoned with rimshot patterns until the saturated bassdrum comes in and paves the way to the dancefloor. &ME even refines his knack for stoic grooves on this jam and once again shows his sure feeling for suitable vocal features. Sabotas croon comes devoid of big gestures and still knows the ropes to appeal to the collective mentality of a clubcrowd.
On the flipside, “Woods” is living up to its name from the very beginning. Woody percussions are thumping within an almost subtropical scenario that’s frequently pervaded by mighty synth clouds. And once again, there’s an arpeggio sneaking in that at some point is taking the lead in this strictly instrumental affair. Add a break building that will educe a floor’s complete euphoric potential without going for the rather mindless escalation and there you have it: a B-side that’s actually more of an A-competitor.

Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Podcast Series!

On this week's editions we welcome Borzoo.

Trained in classical music as a child, Borzoo’s DJing break didn’t come until his university days in Dubai in early 2000s where he was working as a photojournalist for a nightlife magazine, which gave him the opportunities to be part of Dubai’s booming scene at the time where, half dozen heavy weight DJs were flying into Dubai on a weekly basis.

He then started his own club night at Dubai’s only truly underground club at the time, iBO which quickly led to him getting picked up by city’s top promoters to do warm up slots for the international headliners in parties such as Renaissance and Shindig, playing major clubs in the region.

An architect by trade, he continued DJing and making music on the side after moving to Toronto in 2008, but things really kicked in gear after 2011 when he started Cabal in Toronto, an intimate club which gained a lot of respect for its avant-garde bookings, and great intimate vibe, and continued to organize parties and festivals after its closure in 2016.

Despite running Cabal and gigging in other clubs and festivals, Borzoo has managed to clock some time in the studio and has a few originals and remixes released on German and Dutch labels Kindisch and Techfui as well as Toronto’s Scardinius and continues to evolve and grow in his beloved scene.

It’s all about versatility and mood for dutch DJ and producer Nachtamt. 

Genre comes second place to the desires of bringing ideas into actuality and his contrast of electronic styles affirms this. The music is one aspect, sound the other. Both are equally important in the creative process. His tracks are sometimes intended to portray an opinion or some dissatisfaction at the world. However, Nachtamt more often lets his ideas flow from an ambiguous creative torrent, giving the listener freedom to interpret his crafted palette of sounds and their use to conjure their own aural impressions in the mind.

His musical journey begins in the early eighties. Captivated by the electronic elements and grooves of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album and the synth sounds from the likes of Eurythmics and New Order, a youthful Nachtamt develops his interest and love for electronic music. And while piano lessons at an early age enhance his understanding of melody and structure, he begins also to appreciate a broader spectrum of music genres. In particular, he gets into the tougher sounds of early nineties US rap and the intensities and pace of the dutch techno scene. 

It is at Rotterdam’s infamous Parkzicht however, where his passion for house and techno is truly ignited and his burning desire to create his own tracks is forged. Countless weekends spent at the club listening assiduously and getting down to DJs Rob, Ludie, Ricky da Dragon and Stanton inspires Nachtamt and within a short period of time he gets his first residency at “Twilight” - a night at the club. The release of “Blue Sky” (Twilight Records) by DD Zion, who are colleagues at the club, convince him to get producing and creating. 

Production techniques at that point in time, are a little different to his methods used today, in that his early material is created on a Commodore Amiga and an old PC using Fasttracker - a sample based sequencing program. Nachtamt continues to use Fasttracker to produce music for over a decade while continuing his DJing around Rotterdam. 

In 2013, after a change of production software and equipment, he logs onto Estroe’s electronic music advice site, www.estroe-advice.com and starts the latest chapter of his story. During the first session with Estroe, Nachtamt breaks through the compositional barriers and editing limitations of Fasttracker and explores rejuvenated freedoms with his new setup. With that change comes a deluge of fresh ideas for Nachtamt. Estroe picks up on his creative talent and after a few more sessions it’s agreed that he should release an ep on Estroe’s “Rosedale Records”. His first ep “Enhanced Awareness” (ROSE010) was released on December 7th 2015.

DJing of course, is still a big part of his life and Nachtamt continues to play regularly. In the past year he’s played at Influenza (Leeuwarden), SUR (Rotterdam), Magistrat (The Hague) and has featured on radio shows Turbulentie (Fresh FM), The Boom Room (SLAM!) and Microgarden (LOCA FM).

And so begins the future for Nachtamt. 2016 and onwards looks bright for the journey ahead. Music, as always, plays a huge part in his life and will continue to do so.
