A friend contacted me to play, compose, or improvise music for his short film. He had used some temporary music, but he ultimately couldn't use it. I immediately agreed, as I find such opportunities to be very creative. Before recording, I watched the video three times to get a feel for it. I gathered the equipment from my kit: a voice looper (RC-505) and a large diaphragm microphone (ADK Vienna MK 8), in case I felt the impulse to use one of the wind instruments.

For the recording, I used the Travel Kora as the main instrument. I checked that everything was properly synced and ready to record. I then "grabbed the melody from the air," creating an improvised theme while watching the events unfold in the film.

This is how the main composition, approximately five minutes long, came to life. After listening to the recorded improvisation, I felt the need to add the Birbyne. So, while playing back the video with the Kora track, I began improvising with the Birbyne, creating a multi-layered composition.

The result was a track where the Kora is the dominant melodic instrument, and the Birbyne plays a secondary, accentuating role. As I listened to the composition along with the film, I felt the need for another wind instrument. The Bulgarian caval and bamboo transverse flute seemed like the perfect additions.
