Folks, grab a seat because mother is back! Well, technically Violet’s just released a whole album on naivety - go check it out btw - but this will be her first naive solo EP since “Togetherness” exploded and became the ubiquitous dancefloor track we all know and love. 

On “Espírito” she leaves behind any trace of contemplative jungle and house hybridification to concoct a commanding blend of leftfield Detroit techno sonics and dramatic NYC tribal house. The A-side is a perfect example of this fiery marriage of Sound Factory hard-house beats and glass-like pointillisms that evoke Terrence Dixon and other Midwest experimentalists. 

On the flip side, “Psyche” is a more abstract and somewhat intimate juxtaposition of nervous energy, off-kilter breakbeats and wide-eyed futuristic optimism; a bit as if The Black Dog released their first demos on Cómeme in 2015. 

On the remix we have none other than the Motherbeat founder, High Priestess of the decks and naive royalty Eris Drew, who takes the celestial clouds of spiritual Love from the original and layers them over slick but super-satisfyingly complex beats and textures, exploding into moments of pure lightness and sisterly dancefloor expansion.

After turning heads with this debut EP for our own naivety sublabel, Hassan Abou Alam is back and more than ready to cement his rep as Cairo’s foremost breakbeat master. This Egyptian lover of all things choppy and rave-y cooks up another epic sonic assault on the ears and subwoofers, designing a crafty and detailed 5-tracker that will not only rattle but stun.

A focused but playful energy runs throughout the entirety of the record, initiating things with the fat beats and the bleep-y bassline of “It Spills”, building towards the X-files atmosphere of ‘Unkindled’ and carrying the vibe on to the B-side for three more cuts of subby, tranced-out alien funk. B-side tracks “Breathe” and “Khamassen” bring on a deeper blend of complex funk patterns, elastic bass and mysterious samples while still moving the dance in the most superlative of ways. Finally, bringing things to sweet culmination, the more rugged and raw beats of final track  “All Used Up” ride along expansive, wide-eyed melodies, resonant acid and a pinch of late 90s surfer-traveller optimism.

Could planet Earth be considered a living being? And if so, could it be seen as the physical vessel of a planetary-level spiritual entity? Ancient Hinduism believed so and expounded it in The Upanishads: a collection of early sacred texts where such entity was named Sanat Kumara and inhabited the very center of the Earth, lodged in the wondrous city of Shamballa - these beliefs were later appropriated by western New Age sects of the early 20th century and turned into all manner of silly representations and distortions. 

The idea of a conscious, thinking spirit at the centre of Earth's movements, cycles and magnanimous energy was the inspiration for the opening track on the second naive release by Photonz; accordingly, the tittle-track "Planetary Spirit" is an explosion of modulating energy and rhythm ready to blow raver's into gosebumps territory and full-on techno hysteria. Followed by "Badagas", the EP moves into brainy-but-percussive territory, full of synthetic resonant drums and UK bass sensibility. 

On the flip we've got "Circumference", a driving and hypnotic techno track with synthesized bubble motifs and a steady four-to-the-floor beat. Ending things on a more leftfield tip, Photonz merges early Earth drone bass with Claro Intelecto-style FM bass and slowed-down latin funk rhythms on the true-to-theme track "Earth 2".

London’s own ELLES returns to Naive with “Anthem”, the first single from her forthcoming debut album “A Celebration Of The Euphoria Of Life” - which is also the first LP on naive and marks the 5th anniversary of the Lisbon label.

Written as a love letter to clubbing and its continuum of blissful resistance, the lyrics in “Anthem” take us through impressionist scenes of club abandonment and the emotive remembrance of the "past ones". Glacial synths, vast open space and dreamy vocal detailing make for the perfect backdrop for serotonin-glazed ecstatic pianos and slick house rhythms to come in and lift the song to its anthemic promise. A whirlwind of feel-good house music with indie leanings, “Anthem” will hit you like a Kylie pop dance smash produced by Luomo circa “The Present Lover”.

In the artist's own words. 'ANTHEM is a track about details that linger and visions in the smoke and strobe. It’s about healing, finding hope and the space that music and clubs can provide for processing it all. A standard bearer for the major themes of the album and a love letter to friends, lovers and anyone who has been lost & found in the dance.'

The accompanying videoclip, shot by Portuguese director Bruno Gonçalves, features entrancing images of ELLES herself and Dipsy - a Brazilian dancer and visual artist who is a key figure in Lisbon's underground queer scene - losing themselves solo in industrial, club and house party settings.

naive mainstay ELLES releases her debut album “A Celebration Of The Euphoria Of Life” on May 27th - it's the first LP on naive and marks the 5th anniversary of the Lisbon label. Across the album's eleven tracks, ELLES writes a story through a conceptual arc that follows her (and all of us) from leaving the office on a Friday and entering the cathartic process of going out clubbing and its ramifications. Weaving personal reflections with collective experiences, it tells the ultimate tale of nightlife as a continuum of blissful resistance using beautifully programmed beats and melodic incantations, all narrated by sensitive, synesthesic lyrics and vocal mantras. 

On the album ELLES says: 'A Celebration Of The Euphoria of Life is the story of a night out and all the nights out. Written largely when all the pubs and clubs were shut, it’s a love-letter to those vital communIty spaces for finding your people and pleasures and also about personal healing, processing life and discovering moments of clarity amidst the noise. Carefully sound-designed experimental dance music meets infused breaks and acid in the opening tracks 'out of office', 'hope' and 'out 2 4get' , silky yet raw vocals punctuating them, reminding us of prime Cosey Fanni Tutti with post-punk sensibility. ELLES muses over the repetitiveness of our daily routine and misunderstandings with her love interest while poetically reminding us that hope is our only anchor. 'i think i feel sumthing' brings us a peek into rave languages through an Orbital-esque lens, with rave stabs and euphoric piano riffs showing us a spark of chemical-induced optimism as ELLES sings 'anything is possible' over chopped breakbeats. 'coming up is such sweet sorrow' takes it deeper, translating an altered state of consciousness lit by flashing strobes, with lush harmonic strings and vulnerable lyrics like 'i wanna see all my friends at once, i wanna hug my mom, i wanna go home' - grounded by the certainty that 'this too shall pass (...) we'll come out the other side with lessons in love'. “anthem” takes us through snapshots of club romance via glacial synths, dreamy vocal detailing and serotonin-glazed ecstatic pianos, lifting the UK-garage infused song to its anthemic promise. 

‘toilet talk', perhaps the trippiest sonic sculpture of the LP, tells us about the all-familiar moment of sisterly bonding with new friends you just met in a club toilet over a disorienting, grime-referencing instrumental. 'dry ur tears' throws us back into garage-tinged territories with intricate vocal chops and harmonies as a base for a lyrical exploration of inebriated self-inspection and deep reflection. 'candyflip 69' dazzles us with the artist's range, effortlessly fusing Balearic, rock and a touch of Simple Minds. 'sex' brings authentic electro energy with an honest yet bold take on pleasure - Miss Kittin style. 'afterglo' closes the album with an unforgettable, instant-classic chord progression, dreamlike bassline and hair-raising vocals that promise to show us a place where 'the view is just amazing'. You can't help but think that the inebriating images painted in this album are the amazing view that ELLES mentions.

NAIVE017 - ELLES 'A Celebration Of The Euphoria Of Life' LP (preview)

The heart. The core of it all. A bloody, meaty muscle the size of a fist, pumping perpetually. Working, all day, everyday, against the clock. Nature’s own metronome. Sometimes you feel it throbbing in your throat, spasmodic, wanting to escape. Occasionally it explodes in warmth, sending sharp little electric needles of euphoria through the body. Now and then it sinks down to the stomach, acid, heavy like lead.

And one day it breaks — it is broken —, it shatters, quartered as if pulled apart by horses. It hurts. And the sharp pain, imploding, feels inescapable. A solitary ache, a blow, a deep hole which cannot be seen or explained. But you try to mend it. You reach for the glue and the duct tape. You pick pieces of gut and tripe and patch it back together. You shield it and harden it with leftover scrap metal. As long as it’s running.

Could heartbreak hardcore become a subgenre? A cathartic, visceral style nudging itself into the tradition of the hardcore continuum, written and produced by heartbroken musicians?

Heartbreak is the painful devastation left behind by the fact that we are no longer one. Most of us don’t know what to do with it. There is no funeral, no mourning. The capitalist structures which surround and smother us have no cure, no solution for heartbreak. There is no time for it: pain is not productive. That is: we cannot value it as we value a commodity, unless it is deeply enmeshed in layers of meta-post-ironic subterfuge, lest we seem vulnerable. Abstraction upon abstraction, we’ve forgotten what pain is and we’ve tried to hide it. Violet does not, because she cannot. Her approach is violent, immersive, euphoric sincerity. That’s the only way to escape.

HEART opens the EP with early-morning IDM inclinations, cushioned by a dubstep-y, wobbly bassline. It melts into angelical, nostalgic pads, topped with a dusty piano that morphs into some sort of brass instrument - and then back, like an indecypherable instrument, yet unknown to those who touch the earth. The track takes inspiration from one of Violet’s biggest influences, Jamal Moss AKA Hyeroglyphic Being and other sonic experimentalists who push the boundaries of palpability.

BREAK delves unbashedly into DnB territories, with a sub-bass piercing the mix in the pad-led oneiric intro — which leads us into a surprise jazz breakdown — and then a drop with a saturated, nasty jungle rave stab, deliberately navigating between opposing frequencies and states-of-being, like one does when heartbroken.

HARD is a no-frills (for Violet standards) ode to techno realness, to those propulsive dancefloor moments which help us believe that it's worth it to keep pushing through the pains of being pure at heart. It’s highly inspired in the UK techno tradition, with a pinch of dub and percussion for days.

CORE comes as an unexpected treat, the record’s closing act. A genreless groover that seems to melt all sorts of influences — from Depeche Mode to DJ Satélite. A fast-paced slow-burner, the track is chock-full of intricate sound design and romantic moments coming from layered pads. Everything, all at once.

If heartbreak is the core of this record, the cover art by Lisbon artists Shcuro and Postmodern Bot suggest tranquil blue skies are just around the corner. After all, we’re naive over here - and Violet still wants to die an optimist.

NAIVE019 Violet - HEART/BREAK HARD/CORE (preview)

Introducing the second release on angel: 'All I Am Is We' by the versatile Portuguese artist TOMÉ. This EP came about after we shared some incredible dancefloor moments with the young artist and raver, realizing there was a lot of common ground in our sonic leanings - the perfect ingredient to think of a record together. TOMÉ came up with a set of tracks that, through the loose lens of drum n bass, melds some of his main influences: experimental, dreamy, noisy, and intricate soundscapes.

Opener 'Jumping On Slippery Stones' follows a delicate, increasingly oneiric narrative led by organic yet tight crisp breakbeats; a soothing pad; a wobbly sub; arpeggiated psychedelia-drenched synths, and staccato strings. The hilariously titled 'Skull Emoji' follows suit with a mind-bending and ever-mutating break - something you wouldn't be surprised if it were DMX Krew or AFX on the commands - and a twisted synth line akin to what LFO were up to back in the early nineties. His own vocals, 16 rap bars pitched to semi-chipmunk levels, somehow make it to this track and unexpectedly tie it up perfectly.

'Unemployed Friends' brings us complex drum programming and disorienting (good) piano licks layered over warm fluffy pads to a highly emotive effect. 'The Plug Looking At Me' is the only four-to-the-floor track, punctuated with half-tempo dubbed out broken moments because nothing is straightforward in this record - ravey stabs also make the cut, making for a blissful and imaginative party banger.

The EP closes with a remix by Porto's Bug Snapper, a multimedia artist and musician who is part of the city's forward-thinking ARCANA collective. It picks up the original and transforms it with resonator sound sculpting into a dubby, deep ecstatic trip, all long drifting pads and renewed melodies.

angel is a new label ran from Lisbon by Violet. A sister label to naive and naivety, angel tries to portray the party series of the same name - a bass-led, smoke-drenched celebration where the main room is dedicated to dnb and the second room explores adjacent genres.

ANGEL002 TOMÉ - All I Am Is We (preview)

naive has returned to releasing music on vinyl and digital formats, now distributed by Rotterdam's finest Clone Records. NAIVE020 epitomizes what the Lisbon-based label, run by Violet, has become cherished for: imaginative yet timeless, soothing yet moody, melodic yet sonic music. Entitled 'Computer Hermetics', this new record is an EP by UrbnMowgli, a fairly new Berlin-based artist who began releasing music in 2020.

The opening track, 'Fast Love Life', is a 145 bpm electro-bred, breakbeat-driven emotive dancefloor banger. It features menacing stabs juxtaposed with beautiful pads and acid-drenched arpeggio motifs that lend it a oneiric quality. 'Oracle Algorithm' picks up the 303 spirit and delves into trippier territories, densening the dreamlike, expansive atmosphere while infusing the record with electro-driven grit. Closing side A is 'Warschauer Rush-Hour', a futuristik, high-tempo twisted electro banger that's both tough and playful.

'Immaterial Desires' inaugurates side B—an ode to adventurous drum programming and intricate sound design in the form of a percussion-punctuated curveball belter. 'Digital Dawn' brings it all back home to the heart and closes the record with its deepest, most immersive moment, giving us big bass lines that alchemically converse with angelic bleepy melodies as if soundtracking a soulful sci fi movie that doesn't exist yet.

A goth dreamer, skilfully playing music that is inextricably her - that's precisely our cup of tea. What a ride. We are all fuzzy inside with this one.

Almaty is a producer and DJ from Sweden, known for her adventurous and emotive dj sets throughout the Øresund region and its major cities Copenhagen and Malmö. This is her first release ever and comes in a punchy package with remixes by Octo Octa, Photonz and Endian.

The original mix, 'Gennaro', is a left-of-centre club beast that drums up a storm of imaginatively combined funky breaks, imaginative percussion and melodic emotional peaks to create unstoppable dancefloor momentum while remaining inspired and fresh. 

The Octo Octa re-work focuses on the percussion sounds and the melodic elements of the original to conjure an epic ride of airy melodies, endless spaciousness and expansive emotion that harkens back to some of trance's finest moments. 

Lisbon techno innovator and Rádio Quântica co-founder Photonz steps in with a breakbeat-heavy, dubby dancefloor bomb full of funked up rubbery basslines and dark atmospheres.

angel d’lite aka a boy from outer space is such a fav. a super expansive, imaginative person, full of life and ideas and basically a rainbow inside her. all of this reflects in the way she DJs: an energetic, fun-loving, no-frills approach that is nonetheless always interesting, surprising and non-conforming - informed by a very unique (and *amazing*) taste that she refined by going to (and playing in) the best raves, queer clubs and parties in London for the past 5 years. That's where Sadie has learnt to hear dance music differently, in her own words via 'dancing to music that isn't dance music music, dancing differently... be freer and not judgemental of music and the era or how (un)fashionable it is.' - this could be our motto as a label, and this bae couldn't be a better fit for the naivetape series. Hers is an unapologetic love letter to euphoria and bliss, be in in the form of amazing chipmunk vocals, dopamine-charged rave stabs, jungly pad freshness, happy hardcore hyperenthusiasm, breezy dub, raw post-punk.. you name it. there are no limits for this boo (or for us, it's a match!). and bonus, it all comes in the form of an ever-flowing fountain of loving, positive, vibrating energy. this mix is EVERYTHING. literally and figuratively.

Sweden's Almaty joined the Naive family last year with her left-of-centre banger of a debut single "Gennaro" (NAIVE003). This spring she returns to us with her first full EP, Sonic Signature. Building on the sound she introduced on "Gennaro", Almaty gives us an expansive four-track EP that flawlessly combines inventiveness and attention to detail, where breakbeats, ecstatic melodies and bass lines come together in a variety of exciting forms.

"Sonic Signature" is an absolute rave monster of an opener with a growling bass and squelching 303 over precisely programmed breaks. "Gen4" takes a more subtle turn, pushing the dance floor onward with a sense of tension and urgency. Percussion echoes among moody strings while the 303 burbles along.

On the flip, "Tulips" opens - a rich cut with complex levels working together to stimulate the mind and body, with Almaty bringing her take on trance to satisfy both retro ravers and new ears. "Do You Actually" closes out the EP with an atmospheric, nearly beat-free sound where drifting synths and arpeggiated bass invoke 80s horror movie soundtracks.

YES. we both have a knack for mutating menacing synths and oneiric rave vibrations, and that's very clearly present once again in this beautiful mix she recorded for the naivetape series. We're so happy and honoured to have this queen <3 and the timing is perf as we're meeting IRL for the first time this weekend YAYYY

Maker of the dopest tracks, Glasgow's Fear-E is a definite fav around here. Ever since i got sent a batch of his new tracks i pretty much did not stop playing them, as they're all really inventive and effective all at once, with menacing melodies and twisted textures. We have a running joke that people only film me playing when one of his tracks is on! but the reality is i only play his music, nothing else muahahahaha
part of the dixon avenue basement jams crew, this bb is also a very good dj who hops between the best stuff in any dance genre with ease and intent, but for this mix we asked him for a very specific thing, an intense electro mix - after hearing through the grapevine that he'd like to do make people robot-dance to the sounds of fast electro music more often. and, tbh, listen to this naivetape and hear for yourself how prepared he is to legit electrify dancefloors no pun intended. also he's such a sound, lovely person and that's... the best. 
ps - we asked him and he does not Fear E btw, he thinks it's actually a gr8 time but these days he avoids it. so yeah, just to clear the air.

For the thirty-eigth naivetape she delivers a mix that blends modern twists on acid with dreamy psychedelic rollers, mystey-drenched drum-led tracks, italo offshoots and the good kind of deranged synths that we've been obsessing over for long too - an hour and a half of sensibility + an incredibly unique ear to timeless tracks that make us daydream (or close our eyes and dream-dream on the dancefloor).

hello hello hellooo today we bring you an icon from Rio de Janeiro's rave scene, the one and only Ananda. this bb does it all: throws amazingly energetic, inclusive, queer raves; makes her own music AND is an incred DJ too. also, she is the sweetest. we recently hung out in Rio when i was there to play her KODE party where i had the best time and met incredible people - this girl is surrounded by a mega inspiring community of ravers and artists who are so talented and so witty and so funny i seriously lost it. i had to get her on this family so here it is, an incred new naivetape by Ananda, chock full of acid bangers, fast electro, rave euphoria and off-kilter moments. honestly listening to it made me miss her so much - and made me wish i was in rio right now, listening to her play at one of her vibey, sweaty raves. an icon from one of my favourite places in the universe. I only have one shared irl memory with this bb but trust me it was an important one in my story. I'd broken my leg three months prior and playing with Nurse in Glasgow (1 of my favourite music places) was one of my first tour dates after many weeks at home healing from surgery - i was still on crutches and wheelchair, and played sitting down and all that. chester was mega sweet, helpful and played an incred warm-up set. ALSO bc i'm a helpless ramen fangirl i asked to change the planned artist dinner to ramen dayo cause i love that place so much LOL and they were fine and liked the idea and didn't make me feel like a diva which i appreciate :D anyway, i'll cut my silly stories short: chester is one of those people whose work matters to me - when you become friends with the party crew as you share a wavelength and because of that there's so much meaning in the actual floor that night. and that really really happened for me which made me feel comfortable in my skin and completely do my thing in the decks. this here mix is a reflection of chester's sensibility, combining broken kicks with soulful textures and amazing percussion in an eleganza feast honey. aaand follow this cutie while you're at it: @nursenursenurse

naivetape #45 - Nurse

I first saw (a glimpse) of Rotterdam's Nala Brown in action via a small clip of her mixing togetherness that rRoxymore sent to me during ADE last year. Since there i've stumbled upon her online via mixes and her collective Ampfeminine who in their own (beautiful) words aims to add a lovely variety of colour in nightlife. The energy and expansiveness of her music really speaks to me so i slid into her DMs for a little naivetape and yep great decision - this is an incredibly tight and refreshing mix relying on all manner of sharp, broken drum patterns, warm basslines and cut-and-past aesthetics and those melodies that make you feel alive. Very honoured to have such a talented bb on board this of this series. Hope everyone is staying safe.

naivetape #46 - Nala Brown

Badman designer of all naive artworks and one of our closest fam, Shcuro steps up to the plate this time as a music-maker and a mean bassbin shaker with his naive debut Echoplexia. As a producer and DJ, João Ervedosa is one of those not-so-hidden-anymore treasures from Lisbon, with tracks out on Dark Entries, Lobster Theremin and other dope labels. But he's also become a vital node of the Portuguese scene by connecting several generations of ravers via his own label, party and radio show Paraíso - a platform devoted to documenting past, present and future of the local rave movement. On top of all of that, he's an excellent human too.

Kicking things off with a lot of finesse and power, EP opener "Far Out" merges Digital Mystikz dub hauntologies with the UK-centric breakbeat styles of Leftfield circa "Africa Shox". Lift-off comes in the shape of the second track "Temptation", a number that's sure to nail ravers down to the ground of many a discerning techno moshpit; dub echoes mingling with cavernous clangs, Detroit pads and elegant beats roll over tons a' relentless bass. A3 cut "Bassforce" brings in the LFO-style creepy strings to good use while technoid, broken riddims erupt in a way that references golden age dubstep, jungle and raw T++ tunes. Swaying all expectations thus far, fourth track "Drowned" sends us into shiny anxiolytic bliss, with its crunched-down beats, dripping-wet soul samples and Maria Amor's dreamy textural vocals. Label mum-sweetie Violet takes a left turn into metallic electro rambunction with sub-bass wobbles, trancey stacks of synths and a breezy sense of melody. Closing down the EP in the best possible way, we've got none other than naive's main girl - and utter twitter champion - Ilana Bryne also on the remix, condensing a liquid breakbeat roller that sounds like the offspring of LTJ Bukem and Wookie; meditative and atmospheric airs of hope and mystery float over lean, funky kicks, snares and subs, irradiating healing vibes galore.
