"The Song of Fathoms", colloquially also known as "Oscillation", is a popular tune well-known around Lumen. Despite this, it remains a musical piece surrounded by discussion and dispute. In spite of the fact that we know exactly how old the piece is, and who the original author is, certain events and clauses of history mean that we cannot reliably verify its true arrangement and original text.

"Dust smogging the air; the tunnels ahead forking out; flickering lights and shadow-movement. The walls of the tunnels are inscribed with gouged patterns: spirals, cross-hatchings. They look like the cuts of a creature trying to claw its way out of a trap, or the ritual petroglyphs of a tribe.

The lizard-machine feeds at the face, the conveyor belt continues to trundle ore towards the hopper, and I am struck by a sense of the creatureliness of the mining operation: the avid clawing at the rock, the tunnel network that has been created. I remember cross-sections I have seen of the interiors of termite mounds and ants' nests, rabbit warrens and mole runs. Neil's map of the mine, with its hundreds of miles of intersecting drift, is just the plan of another animal's burrow-complex, bored out in search of resources."

i don't think anyone in all the Luminants could stand a chance. an endless procession of blades, and an unending storm of cannonades.

anyway. no real context behind this track. my mind started wandering quite heavily while i was working on some other music, and i decided to try and sample a variety of my own tracks (WIPs and published stuff) to see what i could throw together, as a creative exercise. gotta get the creativity flowing somehow.

not going on the main account since this is just a sketch - aka, not a track meant to be completed.

for the curious, this contains 'The Killing Wind', 'And Let Slip The Hounds Of War', 'Games Of War', a guitar riff from the upcoming 'Shallow Breath', and two unreleased vocal pieces - 'Our Fortress (Of Smoke And Steel)', and 'The Hammer's Call'. i made the two vocal parts kinda sing in tandem with one another, or i suppose in a sort of call-and-response arrangement.

i like the juxtaposing contrast between the monolithic and many-voiced ignition union theme, ebbing and fading between its own phrases, and the more laid-back and focused summer company theme, singing in (mostly) full sentences. 'The Killing Wind' made for a nice bassy backdrop for this (+ it contains a fragment of 'The Hammer's Call' in and of itself), and the martial themes from the game just seemed to fit the piece's lowkey militaristic vibe.

i spent like... 2 hours hyperfocusing on this track. my bad all,

man. maybe i Do have ADHD.

In ancient times, There was a Dwarven blacksmith.  The iron in his region was rather poor and despite the skill he lavished upon his blades, they would always break.  One day a mysterious stranger, robed in black, approached him at his forge and offered to enchant the blacksmith's forge that blades made in it's fire would never perish.  The blacksmith was suspicious, and asked what the stranger wanted in return.  "The deed itself is my payment," said the stranger.  The smith opened his mouth to reject the offer, when his gaze fell upon one of his broken swords.  Hesitantly the dwarf agreed.  

The stranger pointed at the dwarf's forge and began an incantation.  Clouds gathered and snow began to fly in the valley, despite the summer.  The ground shook and spikes of obsidian shot up around the forge.  The fire, which had been a warm red, became an arcane violet.  "It is done," said the stranger to the horrified dwarf.  The smith cautiously took up his tools as the stranger watched, and forged a blade.  When the sword was completed, the dwarf tested the blade against the obsidian.  As he struck the rock, the blade sheared in two.  Outraged, the dwarf confronted the mysterious black robed man.  "Strike the anvil with this broken blade," said the man, and the dwarf, full of suspicion, complied.  The sheared blade clove the anvil in two and the blade took no hurt.  

All blades fired in this forge would break soon after forging, but the shards would never rust, nor dull, nor break.  Much mischief was done with those blades.  The forge came to be known as The Splinter-Forge.  From then on, the snow never departed that region and the violet fire never cooled.
