"Kindir Surprise speaks of an identity distress, the distress that for many years prevented me from finding my place in my own person, the true Me. Then, i took a trip to Morocco in 2005, after 12 years without returning..."

"I was 28 years old, and about to rediscover a part of myself. The music, ever-present, spoke to me. The same music that used to leave me indifferent as a teenager in France, enamored with Hip Hop, funk, soul... and rejecting my parents' music, trying to create my own identity..."

"Walking through the aisles of the flea markets of Derb Ghallef, in Casablanca, I came across a box of about a hundred 60s-70s popular music 45 rpm records. When I asked for the price, the old man said, "Those are garbage, you won't do anything with them, take them for 0.5 dirhams each." I didn't hesitate."

"His voice still echoes in my head, as if he had thrown me a challenge... while offending our heritage. Thus was born the addiction, going to Morocco to feel that part of me, talking with the elders of my family before their final departure, and collecting all the records I could before they disappeared... it was like saving a part of myself by playing with time."

"The trips became more and more frequent, by motorcycle to slip through better, to appreciate the natural splendors, to be alone with myself..."

"When the Covid lockdown happened, and I found myself isolated with my family, I eventually decided to tackle this idea that has been lingering in my mind. Until then, I had only played some of these vinyl records at targeted events... but I wanted to do more, I wanted to merge with that part of my identity that I had materialized in these records."

"This is how Siba Sawt System, the anarchy of my inner self, was born, blending both my Western and Moroccan heritages with my musical culture. It has been my therapy, and I can never thank that old man enough for unknowingly throwing me the challenge of meeting my own self... That's where the surprise solution was... And how I can finally introduce myself completely.

I was amazed to note that only the presence of music offered me the opportunity to see my uncles, aunts, let go of their seriousness that the difficult life they led imposed on them." 

"Improvised percussion with tea glasses and small spoons, a basin, a table…. The instrument that struck me the most was the "kemenja" violin... silky and sharp at the same time, its languorous sounds attracted these big children to the dance floor, and its incisive riffs cut sharply into their ability to control their body... the violinist directed the guests like a puppeteer, letting them wondering: "Ah Meli meli, ya rabih meli" - what is happening to me, my god what is happening to me!"
