for Disquiet Junto Project 0497: Benjamin’s Glass
The Assignment: Pay tribute to Benjamin Franklin and his armonica

The Junto assignment is to record a live performance on the glass harp, and to employ live processing in the performance. There should be no post-production. 

Process:

I rubbed some wine glasses with water in it, using both hands, the sound went through a chain of EQ, Delay, multiband compressor, reverb and limiter. 

I produced a lot more of recordings, also trying to use my contact microphone, which however kept the glasses from properly resonating, and the result sounded more like a tortured rubber balloon. While indeed quite interesting sounds, it was very annoying to listen to, so I spare you that.

for Disquiet Junto Project 0499: Out of the Landscape
The Assignment: Record a piece of music in which a sound emerges from a field recording.

The process was described in several surprisingly (and suspiciously) detailed steps and I really tried to adhere to them. 
Therefore I first marked the sections in my DAW to outline what is supposed to happen when. 
Then I looked for a field recording on my hard drive, containing about 100 GB of my own field recordings :/ however, finding one that was 5 minutes long drastically reduced the amount of recordings I could pick from. I listened to several and had some ideas, but realized that the field recording needed to be somewhat continuous, otherwise it wouldn't make sense in the end. Most of my longer field recordings (mostly construction site machine noise)are not the same in the beginning and the end, more like a long collection of builders doing different noisy stuff) therefore "we hear the unadorned original field recording for the first time" could not be met. 
One recording was left: birds making noise in my backyard in the morning. Since my backyard is in a big city there is also hum and other noise. 
Ok, the next step was to insert something that wasn't noticable right away. Difficult with birds, making bird-like synth sounds is also not very pleasant on the ear. Any other noise could have been in my backyard, but I do not live on Mars, so... I tried different things and wanted to give up. 
But I had another idea: took a piece of the original bird recording and used it for resynthesis, so I can have the bird in my synth to manipulate. I recorded several takes of the manipulation and tried to adhere to the timeline of events, but I had to cut out some time in the middle because the recording still wouldn't fit for 5 minutes. 
Anyway, having a piece of the original birdsong+hum resynthesized, I could also focus the sound on the hum, and got a nice droning. Sounds like I added something else, but it was all contained. Now I have a bird with a terrible space disease. I like it. 

tl;dr: according to assignment. 5 minutes! almost. I liked the drone.

Process notes: recorded some ice cubes rattling in a glass and used only stretched snippets from that sounds to make this slow walking piece.
Pretty mellow and chill I think, unlike the very first junto project, where I made much more noise.

found this random pile of objects, looked at them and tried to express what I see using synths and sample arrangements.
Partly it is the material, the angle or the imagined sound of those objects falling.

Disquiet Junto Project 0556: Gabber Ambient
The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

Process: Step 3 cracked me up^^ Instead I really liked the outcome...
It turned out as some kind of dark noise, but the beat is at 200bpm and I used a cliche riser sample.

The Assignment: Use a rhythmic field recording as the foundation for a new track.

for Disquiet Junto Project 0326: Wave Turntable
In collaboration with composer Danny Clay, make music for his exhibit with artist Jon Fischer using only sine waves and turntable surface noise.

Assignment: Compose a short piece of music using only sine waves and the surface sounds of vinyl played on a turntable. 

Process: I had a look at the work of the artists mentioned above. I saw the point and wondered how can I make sine waves that are played by unusually surfaced records? Some time ago, I got an old turntable on the flea market because I wanted to somehow listen to tiny records that I found on my mom's attic. They were from a speaking toy parrot, that had a little toy record player inside. This however, was lost. With a diameter of about 5cm only, the mini records were of course not suited for a regular record player. anyway I tried to play them and recorded the noises, which were very scary. At the end, the records were just skipping and these parts I took out of the recordings (to leave out the scary parrot voices) and glued 4 of them together to a 1 minute wav file. This I used instead of an impulse response for processing in convolution reverb. I fed short sine waves of different frequency into the convolution reverb and let the reverb bounce about as it pleased. I EQd it so that the record noise is still audible as well.

for Disquiet Junto Project 0471: Phase Transition
The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Process: First I was amazed that the first Disquiet Junto project should be already 9 years ago! :O feels like, maybe 3 years.

I still got the recordings of the very first ice cube in a glass project in a folder, however I decided to record new samples, employing stereo microphones and a contact microphone. For the glass I used a large pharmacy flask. This leads to different source recordings but also I decided to use the ice-glass recordings only, created an interesting rhythmic loop and decorated it with stretched and otherwise manipulated sample snippets from the recordings. enjoy & happy new year!
