Disquiet Junto Project 0581: Helsinki Downspout
The Assignment: Use a rhythmic field recording as the foundation for a new track.

I started with slicing out some bars, mostly with irregularities. For whatever reason I thought I have to do this in 5/4th, so the samples had a lenght of 10 noise events, 2 for 1/4. I extracted 6 samples and looped them in Live. Because I wanted to have some irregularities I used two tracks with randomly chosen samples for placing them in a stereo field. I also just had bought Mac for Cats Synthie Cat which made nice noises on two tracks. I rendered the Stems and went on in Reaper, to add some flutish musical themes and place the Downspout noises in stereo. Much more time went into in EQing out stuff from the Downspout tracks, but I wasn't conviced with the results and the Downspout sounds were so nice and fruity in itself, so I deleted all this EQing parameter automation. I sometimes wonder how many things you do that are not in the final track …

Hellsinki Dawn [disquiet0581]

In which I willfully misinterpret a field recording of a downspout in Helsinki (see below)as a percussion accompaniment, and write the melodies for it to accompany.

When I first heard the clip, I was surprised by how regular it was rhythmically -- it sounded like a drum playing swung eighths. I started getting ideas for melodic material that the drummer could be responding to.

The next thing I did was to transcribe the rhythm. I ended up interpreting it as a 12/8 -- I was initially anticipating having to carve up the bars differently at different times, but I found I didn't have to.

I decided to interpret the instruction "the provided music is the underlying rhythm" to mean that there shouldn't be a rhythmic event without the "drum" involved. (That is, e.g. if the "drum" is playing dotted quarters, nobody else is playing faster than that, and if the drum is playing eighth notes, someone is playing eighth notes with it.) So there are faster, more contrapuntal sections, and more chorale-like sections when less is going on rhythmically.

And then there are also just a couple of places that vary from the "groove", like the lone duple, which I had to deal with a little differently, and the sort of syncopated part near the end. I had the piccolo match the rhythm in the latter case with what I think is a quote from a folk song (but I don't know what the folk song is called, or how the rest of it goes).

I put the clip into Audacity and recorded all five parts (piccolo, three C flutes, and alto flute) over it. I realized that once they were all in there, it was no longer possible to hear some of the softer "notes" of the "drum", so I made that track a little louder.

Sextet for Five Flutes and Helsinki Downspout (disquiet0581)

I felt inspired to have a go at this week’s Junto as I love field recordings and I am also pretty immersed in playing with rhythms at the moment. It was a natural fit and great fun.

For the process I loaded the original field recording into Ableton’s Simpler and used Split mode, one of my favourite features. I done similar on another channel with a sampled drum loop. Between the two they made a complex polyrhythm. From here I mapped up some parameters and jammed out a long take, most of which remains untouched in this piece. I then layered sub bass below using the Model D and used a sample from 2001 Space Odyssey I took from vinyl a few months ago for the primal style scream halfway through. I felt it fitting with the tribal nature of the drums.

I think the piece is quite a challenging listen but very honest. Great fun was had too :-)

Flying Tulpa - Disquiet0581 - Helsinki Downspout

This week's Disquiet Junto project is to use the rhythm of rain in a pipe as the foundation for a piece of music. I piped (hoho) the audio into three frequency bands and trigger a different synth note when each band gets over a certain volume. The lowest frequency band is the lowest synth note and so on. I'll put more on lines, link at the bottom.

Disquiet Junto Project 0581: Helsinki Downspout

The Assignment: Use a rhythmic field recording as the foundation for a new track.

Step 1: This is a shared sample project, one in which all the participants will utilize the same provided recording, about a minute and a half long, as the rhythmic element for their own music. Access the track, originally recorded by Scott Fletcher and used with his permission, here:

Step 2: Listen to the provided track several times. Think about ways to map its content, perhaps making notations about when certain unique, momentary aspects surface.

Step 3: Record an original piece of music for which the provided music is the underlying rhythm. You might take this quite literally, using the source as it is, resulting in a track that is precisely 1:35 long. Alternately, you might elect to sample and rework the source material. If you go the latter route, make certain that the original sound is, at least at some point in the finished track, recognizable.

Step 4: Because this is a Creative Commons resource, be sure to identify Scott Fletcher as the original recorder of the source material, and include a link to the source track. Identify the license as: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0).

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Like a butterfly caught inside - disquiet0581

Ανω ΚΑΤΩ (pronounced “ah-no KAH-to”) is a form of techno music that combines native Pontic Greek instrumentation with electronic dance rhythms. The name, often shortened into the more global term KATO, loosely translates into English as “messed up.”

KATO is believed to have formed sometime in the 1990’s, when a group of Macedonian sheep herders picked up the throbbing bass of a dance club located in the nearby valley’s urban center. Legend is that the herders attempted to play along with the beat on daouli drum, fife, and kemenche, forcing the musicians to actually play slower than the tempos to which they were accustomed. This adjustment resulted in new phrasing techniques that today comprise the subgenre’s sonic attributes.

The typical KATO techno track sits between 125 and 140 BPM and features arpeggiated notes performed on a kemenche, also known as the “instrument of the Black Sea.” The strings are bowed with a doksar made from an olive branch, double-bound to withstand the repetitive velocity needed to accompany loudly amplified beats. Glitch effects feature prominent in KATO techno, perhaps a carryover from the sketchy radio transmissions commonly heard on rural Macedonian mountaintops during KATO’s advent.

Suss Müsik owns a few KATO releases, all on compact disc and bought from the same record shop that unearthed this nugget.* Probably the best-known KATO artist is Matia14, whose track “Θα φας ξύλο” (“You Will Eat Wood”) was famously remixed by DJ Penmanship in 1999. The untitled track featured here is by a Thessaloniki group named αργό λάχανο, known as Slow Cabbage in English.

for Disquiet Junto Project 0326: Wave Turntable
In collaboration with composer Danny Clay, make music for his exhibit with artist Jon Fischer using only sine waves and turntable surface noise.

Assignment: Compose a short piece of music using only sine waves and the surface sounds of vinyl played on a turntable. 

Process: I had a look at the work of the artists mentioned above. I saw the point and wondered how can I make sine waves that are played by unusually surfaced records? Some time ago, I got an old turntable on the flea market because I wanted to somehow listen to tiny records that I found on my mom's attic. They were from a speaking toy parrot, that had a little toy record player inside. This however, was lost. With a diameter of about 5cm only, the mini records were of course not suited for a regular record player. anyway I tried to play them and recorded the noises, which were very scary. At the end, the records were just skipping and these parts I took out of the recordings (to leave out the scary parrot voices) and glued 4 of them together to a 1 minute wav file. This I used instead of an impulse response for processing in convolution reverb. I fed short sine waves of different frequency into the convolution reverb and let the reverb bounce about as it pleased. I EQd it so that the record noise is still audible as well.
