halF downspouT [disquiet0581]

A rhythmic field-recording of a downspout in Helsinki serves as the basis for this track, inspired by the Disquiet Junto Projet 0581 (details see below).

Somehow Helsinki immediately  triggered thoughts of Aki Kaurismäki and his many beautiful films. Especially https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drifting_Clouds_(film) came to mind and gave the track its title.
I hope the track does it justice. Since it was created rather technically it is a result of the versatility of randomness and the power of art.

I proceeded as follows: First, low-pass and high-pass filtered versions of the field-recording were created. Then hit-points and midi-notes were extracted from these three variants. These were assigned to different instruments.
Two variants of the field-recording created with PaulXStretch are also included.

Using Ableton Beatseeker M4L device, I locked in to the beat of the drips.
https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/beatseeker/.

You'll feel the track tempo follow the drip, it's close to 131 BPM, but varies with each drip. The magic of brownian motion and chaos.

To the drip sample, I added Mr. Wiggly's Incinerator. 

Dominic Hawken, aka Mr. Wiggly, passed away Monday, 6 February 2023. 
Dominic touched so many people lives, with his joie de vivre. A truly inspirational man, he made being a great guy seem effortless. I didn't know him, only from his channel, SonicTalk, ProSynthNetwork channel, and his relationship with Kent - "Kent Spong, can you tell me what's wrong?". 

God bless Mr. Wiggly and his family.

disquiet0581: Helsinki Downspout (dedicated to Mr. Wiggly)

This was my contribution for the Disquiet Junto Project 0581:Helsinki Downspout

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0581 discussion thread:

I went in a lot of different directions at first trying to figure out how to incorporate the rhythmic field recording but finally settled on using it alongside more ambient tracks. Hopefully the source audio isn't lost or too much in the background.

This was created in Ableton Live using Slate+Ash Choreographs and ThePhonoLoop Tapes.01. The sample was modulated with Max for Live Slink Devices with added effects using Valhalla Supermassive and Baby Audio Spaced Out.

Cloudburst Cascade

[disquiet0581] Cloudburst Cascade

for Disquiet Junto Project 0326: Wave Turntable
In collaboration with composer Danny Clay, make music for his exhibit with artist Jon Fischer using only sine waves and turntable surface noise.

Assignment: Compose a short piece of music using only sine waves and the surface sounds of vinyl played on a turntable. 

Process: I had a look at the work of the artists mentioned above. I saw the point and wondered how can I make sine waves that are played by unusually surfaced records? Some time ago, I got an old turntable on the flea market because I wanted to somehow listen to tiny records that I found on my mom's attic. They were from a speaking toy parrot, that had a little toy record player inside. This however, was lost. With a diameter of about 5cm only, the mini records were of course not suited for a regular record player. anyway I tried to play them and recorded the noises, which were very scary. At the end, the records were just skipping and these parts I took out of the recordings (to leave out the scary parrot voices) and glued 4 of them together to a 1 minute wav file. This I used instead of an impulse response for processing in convolution reverb. I fed short sine waves of different frequency into the convolution reverb and let the reverb bounce about as it pleased. I EQd it so that the record noise is still audible as well.
