It is often hard to understand the complexities of many of the issues facing us today in this country. One of the key items which is changing rapidly is this country’s approach to immigration and refugee resettlement. There are so many loud voices in the media-how do we understand what is actually happening and the choices that we have as citizens of this country?



This is the first of a three-part series, Immigration Complexities, presented at St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, FL by John Caulfield. The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead Carroll, dean of St. John's Cathedral provides the introduction.


John Caulfield is a retired Foreign Service officers who represented the United States in nine countries on four continents over a career of 40 years. He ended his career as Chief of the US Mission in Havana, Cuba in 2014. Prior to Havana he also served as Charge d’Affaires at US Embassy Caracas. He retired in Jacksonville along with his wife Nancy who is also retired from the U.S. Department of State. During his career John specialized in the geographic region of Latin America and the Consular function, which involves services to Americans abroad and issuing visas to foreign citizens who want to visit or immigrate to the United States. In the course of his career he supervised the largest immigrant processing offices abroad at the American Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and U.S Embassy Manila, Philippines. He also served as the Department of State’s liaison with the US Congress on immigration and citizenship issues.

Dr. Holder serves on the Florida Board of Trustees for The Nature Conservancy alongside JoAnn Tredennick, founder of Green Spirits at St. John’s. She draws on her experience as a physician, educator, and advocate to offer a compelling perspective on how climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable communities.

The Green Spirits welcomed Sarah Flint, Creation Care Fellow at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Fernandina Beach, for a conversation about how congregations can support Creation Care efforts. Sarah spoke with JoAnn Tredennick, founder of the Green Spirits at St. John’s Cathedral, and shared how her congregation has embraced environmental responsibility, from conducting energy audits to creating a meditation garden and forming local partnerships. Together, they explored how faith communities can learn about, protect, and renew God’s earth and all its inhabitants.
