Inspired by the burgeoning Psy-Trance scene of Cape Town, Nano Records was born in 2000 as an international voice for South African producers.  Over the years Nano Records has expanded into one of the top Psy-Trance labels on the international scene and is now home to artists from around the world.  A global label with deep roots in Africa.

A lot has changed and developed over these last 16 years.  Not only does the SA Psy scene now have a wide range of world renowned DJs & Producers, but also has massively successful Decor Artists, Visionary Artists & Festival gatherings.  The scene in South Africa continues to grow and morph, at times influenced by the international Psy scene, at other times dancing to the beat of its own drum.

In celebration of this we have collected a taste of music and art from some (and this really is only 'some' - as there are many more flavours) of South Africa's top Psy-Trance producers and Visionary Artists.  So prepare yourself for a strong dose of South African Psychedelics!

Once Upon a Time project is a quest about the cosmic, magic trance music which can offer to dancefloor travellers… These sonical fairytale landscapes are magically attuned across a sea of deep, dark and melodic psychedelic mood, often fading with film score and organic elements. They drive you through a tunnel of lights and shadows, depths and peaks, eerie and magical.
Kliment’s psytrance project is oriented to the early evening or morning dancefloor.

4. Dance of The Cosmic Serpent

The title is inspired by anthropologist Jeremy Narby's book " The Cosmic Serpent" in which he suggests among other things that the global network of DNA based life is actually a conscious entity and furthermore that the human mind can enter into communication with this DNA consciousness via trance states, enthogenic experiences etc. and by doing so receive detailed and specific information and wisdom.  (think shamen for example)

The dance of the cosmic serpent in the title refers to the total manifestation of this underlying consciousness via the massive variety of lifeforms on planet Earth including us - human beings.  The total of all lifeforms is the dance, the manifestation of it.

This idea along with an already existing notion of mine to create a track purely based around a strong central melody were combined for this track. I derived the melody from an Arabic sounding scale because to me it sounds kind of wiggley and serpentine and often seems to suggest snake charmer music.

Given that I wanted the tune to be the centre piece I approached the composition in a different manner.  Rather than starting out with the kick and bassline as I often do, instead I sat down with a guitar, decided on the implied harmonic movement ( G major, G# major, F minor) and made sure that I had definitively composed the entire tune before booting up the sequencer. Once I had the melody fixed, I built the track up around it.

Argon Spheres funk driven, rhythm oriented sound continues to defy categorization while still encapsulating the spirit of Psychedelic Trance. Ivan Mitic, one half of the Serbian duo Genetica, re-establishes the sound that popularized his first album “Another World” and confirms his innate ability to produce high powered music that is both dynamic and restorative.  

Rebellious by nature, and not one to care about rules or regulations, Argon Sphere recreates the shape and space of euphoria with his sound. Rubbery and elastic basses bounce here and there and wobble up from below. Dreamy melodies, transitory elements and groovy tribal flourishes provide a lighthearted antidote for “restless leg syndrome”.
