Provhat & Chandé spoke to the prolific DJ & Broadcaster, living legend and one true queen of the spiciest blends all the way back in the midst of winter 2020, which our esteemed interviewee attests was “two Manara’s ago”. 

Even still, the Manara we spoke too back then, for their FIRST EVER in depth interview to date, had already garnered vast acclaim as a DJ that has toured clubs and festivals around the world, had residencies on Rinse FM and NTS plus standout appearances on Boiler Room that has every single one of your favourite DJs and Producers tweeting their devotion to her majesty on the decks.

It’s safe to say that she has helped open up the music industry's eyes to South Asian contemporary club sounds. For us she has welcomed us into a space that has inspired many to look back to our childhood with new joy. Creating spaces with her Cousins parties, in arms with others from the South Asian Diaspora but also alongside it and of course the Ultimate Spice Blends compilation and her Pure Spice residency on BBC Asian Network.

Fitting in with her enthralling DJ sets and the chaotic energy she professes an affinity to, this conversation goes everywhere. Insights to Manara's journey into music whilst navigating family and faith, discovering her approach to creativity as a DJ and Producer, and achieving those milestones that have paved the way for others. Legendary Italian DJ and producer Miki joins me for episode 286 of Passing Notes. DJ Miki has been making and playing electronic since the late 70s. His outputs as an artist span many genres including ambient house, techno, trance, and progressive releases across multiple monikers (aka Miki The Dolphic & Major Hypnotic Key Institute), which have found homes at notable labels such as Interactive Test, Dbx, Seekers, Spazio Tempo, Kalahari Oyster Cult and more.

Many of Miki’s records are extremely sought after on Discogs, his releases continue to be reissued and re-released and tracks produced, especially in the 90s are still played and revered today. It’s clear that Miki’s work in creating psychedelic sound experiences has had a profound impact on many musical worlds, and is still influencing music today. I caught up with Miki to ask him about his long standing career in music, how his relationship with music has changed over the years and what it’s like to be asked to tour down under for the first time. Meadow is a producer, DJ and label head for Observer Recordings based in Ithaca NY (unceded Gayogohó:nǫˀ land). Their work is influenced by ambient-leaning house and techno and informed by their experiences as a neurodivergent person.

This mix was recorded after a couple weeks of creative block. I had a strange and hectic summer, so this feels like a good way to bring it to a close and get some ideas out there too.

"Over the last months, I've realized that when I reflect on the music I listen to, many of the songs that help me disconnect, connect with my emotions, and find balance in my daily life often develop in a continuum of infinite loops, spiraling upwards in a flow without end. The melodies and instruments emerge as the main focus and then settle, enveloping me in a blend of sounds and colours that seem to stay with me forever.

Much of that music is represented in these two hours, as a tribute to spiritual jazz, both classic and contemporary, fused with bright variations drawn from trance, ambient, and electronix. It’s a homage to my roots and my future—a 'gathering' to reconnect with my loved ones."
