Recently, the panth lost a jewel that was drenched in the knowledge of Gurmat Sangeet. In his memory, we are sharing with you one of his best presentations in Raag Basant. This was recorded on 13|Feb|2015 at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, New Delhi during the Basant Raag Kirtan Samagam.

Born at village Mulla Hamza in Montgomery District (now in Pakistan) in 1900 A.D., Bhai Samund Singh was given training in music by his father Bhai Hazur Singh Ji from his early child-hood. As a little boy he won a number of prizes and distinctions at musical concerts. He came to be known as 'Kaka Samund Singh' and was much in demand at Sikh congregations. His party came to be known as the best in the understanding of their art and almost perfect in presentation of Gurbani Kirtan. With his unique melo-dious voice, an extensive and deep understanding of Gur-bani, correct interpretation of ragas, attractive style of sing-ing and great human qualities, he reigned supreme for sixty years in the world of Gurbani Kirtan. He performed kirtan at the Gurdwara Janam Sthan, Sri Nankana Sahib, the birth place of Guru Nanak Dev, for many years. He broadcast kirtan for 36 years from All India Radio, Lahore and later from Jalandhar and commanded wide listening. Passers-by stopped in the streets to listen to his kirtan irrespective of their faith. He was invited to perform kirtan in the National Programme of Music by All India Radio, the highest recognition of his art. He was given State award by the Punjab Government in 1971. He passed away at Ludhiana (5th January, 1972).

Kalyaan, Fourth Mehla:

ਰਾਮਾ ਮੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਧੁਵੀਜੈ ॥
O Lord, I wash the feet of the Holy.

ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦਹਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
May my sins be burnt away in an instant; O my Lord and Master, please bless me with Your Mercy. ||1||Pause||

ਮੰਗਤ ਜਨ ਦੀਨ ਖਰੇ ਦਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਅਤਿ ਤਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
The meek and humble beggars stand begging at Your Door. Please be generous and give to those who are yearning.

ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਾਹਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਏ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
Save me, save me, O God - I have come to Your Sanctuary. Please implant the Guru's Teachings, and the Naam within me. ||1||

ਕਾਮ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਜੂਝੁ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
Sexual desire and anger are very powerful in the body-village; I rise up to fight the battle against them.

ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
Please make me Your Own and save me; through the Perfect Guru, I drive them out. ||2||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਬਲ ਅਤਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਹਿਵ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
The powerful fire of corruption is raging violently within; the Word of the Guru's Shabad is the ice water which cools and soothes.

ਤਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਰੋਗੁ ਕਾਟੈ ਸੂਖਿ ਸਵੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
My mind and body are calm and tranquil; the disease has been cured, and now I sleep in peace. ||3||

ਜਿਉ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਠਾਈ ਸਭ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
As the rays of the sun spread out everywhere, the Lord pervades each and every heart.

ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਤੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
Meeting the Holy Saint, one drinks in the Sublime Essence of the Lord; sitting in the home of your own inner being, drink in the essence. ||4||

ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਰੀਜੈ ॥
The humble being is in love with the Guru, like the chakvi bird which loves to see the sun.

ਨਿਰਖਤ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਭ ਨਿਰਖੀ ਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਢੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
She watches, and keeps on watching all through the night; and when the sun shows its face, she drinks in the Amrit. ||5||

ਸਾਕਤ ਸੁਆਨ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
The faithless cynic is said to be very greedy - he is a dog. He is overflowing with the filth and pollution of evil-mindedness.

ਆਪਨ ਸੁਆਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਤਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਵਿਸਾਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
He talks excessively about his own interests. How can he be trusted? ||6||

ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਨਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਕਢੀਜੈ ॥
I have sought the Sanctuary of the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; I have found the Sublime Essence of the Lord.

ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਣੀਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
They do good deeds for others, and speak of the Lord's many Glorious Virtues; please bless me to meet these Saints, these devotees of the Lord. ||7||

ਤੂ ਅਗਮ ਦਇਆਲ ਦਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
You are the Inaccessible Lord, Kind and Compassionate, the Great Giver; please shower us with Your Mercy, and save us.

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੫॥
You are the Life of all the beings of the world; please cherish and sustain Nanak. ||8||5||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
gobi(n)dh gobi(n)dh kar haa(n) ||
(ਹੇ ਸਖੀ!) ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹੁ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਾ ।
Meditate on the Lord, the Lord of the Universe.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
har har man piaar haa(n) ||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ।
Cherish the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, in your mind.

ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਧਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
gur kahiaa su chit dhar haa(n) ||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤੋੜ ਦੇ
The Guru says to install it in your consciousness.

ਅਨ ਸਿਉ ਤੋਰਿ ਫੇਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
an siau tor fer haa(n) ||
ਹੋਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਤਾ ਲੈ । ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀ!
Turn away from others, and turn to Him.

ਐਸੇ ਲਾਲਨੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਰੀ ਸਖੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aaise laalan paio ree sakhee ||1|| rahaau ||
(ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਲੱਭਾ ਹੈ) ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲੱਭਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Thus you shall obtain your Beloved, O my companion. ||1||Pause||

ਪੰਕਜ ਮੋਹ ਸਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
pa(n)kaj moh sar haa(n) ||
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀ! ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਪੈਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
In the pool of the world is the mud of attachment.

ਪਗੁ ਨਹੀ ਚਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
pag nahee chalai har haa(n) ||
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣਾ ਪੈਰ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । 
Stuck in it, his feet cannot walk towards the Lord.

ਗਹਡਿਓ ਮੂੜ ਨਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
gahaddio mooR nar haa(n) ||
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਹਰ ਕਰ
The fool is stuck;

ਅਨਿਨ ਉਪਾਵ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
anin aupaav kar haa(n) ||
ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੳ
he cannot do anything else.

ਤਉ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਸਰਨਿ ਪੈ ਰੀ ਸਖੀ ॥੧॥
tau nikasai saran pai ree sakhee ||1||
ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ (ਮੋਹ-ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਪੈਰ) ਨਿਕਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Only by entering the Lord's Sanctuary, O my companion, will you be released. ||1||

ਥਿਰ ਥਿਰ ਚਿਤ ਥਿਰ ਹਾਂ ॥
thir thir chit thir haa(n) ||
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀ! ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਡੋਲ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ 
Thus your consciousness shall be stable and steady and firm.

ਬਨੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
ban girahu samasar haa(n) ||
(ਇਤਨਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਕਿ) ਜੰਗਲ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਇਕ-ਸਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੋਣ । 
Wilderness and household are the same.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਏਕ ਪਿਰ ਹਾਂ ॥
a(n)tar ek pir haa(n) ||
ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ
Deep within dwells the One Husband Lord;

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਧਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
baahar anek dhar haa(n) ||
ਤੇ, ਜਗਤ ਵਿਬ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ੱਕ ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰ 
outwardly, there are many distractions.

ਰਾਜਨ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਂ ॥
raajan jog kar haa(n) ||
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਰਾਜ ਭੀ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਜੋਗ ਭੀ ਕਮਾ ।
Practice Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੋਗ ਅਲੋਗੀ ਰੀ ਸਖੀ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੫੭॥
kahu naanak log alogee ree sakhee ||2||1||157||
(ਪਰ,) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! (ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿਣਾ—ਇਹ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ ।੨।੧।੧੫੭।
Says Nanak, this is the way to dwell with the people, and yet remain apart from them. ||2||1||157||
