Entire treatises are written about this ancient and powerful mantra and its meaning(s).  I've read that it originated from Shri Rudram, which in turn comes from the Yajurveda.  I show a very simple meaning following the lyrics.  It is known as the Great Redeeming Mantra and also as Panchakshara (the 5-Syllable mantra, which doesn't count the 'Om') amongst devotees of Lord Shiva, and there are also associations between those 5 syllables and the five elements.  I invite you to do your own research for more about this mantra.

This is the only track on the Bliss of Kirtan album where I sing all of the 'calls' of the call and response format.  The response "chorus" is comprised of Ben Leinbach, Monnie Ramsell, Prajna Vieira, Yvette Om and myself.  The chant has a very trance-like quality as it continually shifts back and forth between 2 different chords and the two lyric variations of the mantra.  

Instrumentally, the track features Steve Oda on sarod, Monnie Ramsell on esraj, Ben Leinbach on electric guitar, keyboard bass, drums and percussion, and myself on guitar, drums and percussion.  I recorded the sound of the thunderstorm that opens the track one night when the noise of the storm was preventing me from doing some other preliminary recording for the album.

Baba Nam Kevalam 
Baba means "my most beloved One", Nam means "name of" or "to identify with", and Kevalam means "only". So the meaning of the mantra is "My most Beloved is the only One." The ideation is: "Everywhere I look, in everything I hear, feel, see, taste and smell, I perceive that one Supreme Consciousness which pervades all things." 

Kiirtan is the singing of a mantra aloud while ideating on the Supreme Being. It inculcates the feeling of bliss and prepares the mind for meditation, because in performing it all the motor and sensory organs are engaged and directed towards the Supreme. It can be done anywhere, any time, but the best time is just before meditation. 
Chanting the mantra out loud before meditation is called "kiirtan." It is extremely beneficial and makes meditation much easier. Its a sort of a halfway step. The mind stays focused only on the mantra, but all the senses are not focused inwardly--we are still singing and listening. It helps slow breathing (through singing), helps fix the mantra in the mind, and on a subtler level, raises the vibration in the room.

Cosmic Kirtan (LIVE @ OZORA)

Natesh has been chanting in the kirtan tradition for over 40 years, first connecting with this transformational spiritual practice in 1979.  He has led regular kirtan in Sedona, AZ, since 2004 and has led kirtan at BhaktiFest, ShaktiFest and other festivals. He's composed over 200 chants since 2004 and his chants have been called “some of the most beautiful melodies I’ve heard" and his singing "deeply soulful." His Bliss of Kirtan album has evoked comments like "stunningly beautiful for the ear and for the soul" and "a lovely and profound offering."

In 2016, Natesh became deeply connected with Brahmarishi Mohanji (www.mohanji.org) and has composed a number of chants dedicated to Mohanji, some of which are here on Soundcloud.
