Collaboration with Stricknice. I recently got a Hammond M3 organ and I started this track off on my old Tascam 424 MkII to cassette. Put down some drum machine guide, added in my drum kit, and the Hammond M3 in my garage. Bounced that to my computer while adding delay fx and breaks. Sent that to Stricknice, who hit my back the next day with Bass, guitar & samples added, took that and noticed how it sounded like it could use some skank. So I added the bubble piano/organ sound, some sound effects with my voice with a bunch of reverb, some synth bass. Played the melodica bits, Created a bridge section transferring the cassette bits this time all 3 tracks mixed on the computer with heavy low pass filtering. Then found some Lee Perry interviews that I chopped up and inserted. Sprinkled on some drum hits with delay and plate reverb.

Scratch that Itch (Featuring Stricknice)

I feel blessed to be able to keep Alpha Roots’ vibe shining bright for the SoundCloud community to continue to enjoy. 

Alpha Roots sent me these reggae bass and rhythm guitar stem a long time ago, maybe even three years ago in 2016 (bad couch, bad couch)! I originally planned on having Evelyn (of the Reiki Run Rampant tracks on my page) sing over the rhythm but then I moved from Santa Cruz to Portland and she moved from the Pacific Northwest to Santa Cruz, bummer! So the stems sat in my hard drive until new inspiration arrived in the form of Johnny Minstrel, one of favorite song writers on SoundCloud, agreeing to write lyrics and sing over the track. Once Johnny added his deep felt lyrics and magical vocal chords to the mix, the rest of the song came together pretty quickly for me, lol! I often try to put together virtual bands for my tracks and I knew I had to have Jamie Rhind on the track since he worked with Alphio on multiple songs and a reunion was due. I always wanted to work with Jonathan Beckenstein, whose sensitive and thoughtful guitar work is always sublime. Darren and Russ came naturally.  My original drum production work was based on an old Sly Dunbar sample (I like to include the essence of some of my favorite artists in the tracks I work on) but the quality of the drums just wasn’t up to Russ’ standards, hahaha, so we brought Bitzone on board to lay down some drums and voila, roots reggae magic!

Big thanks to the band for coming together on this in fine fashion! Big ups to the SoundCloud community and the spirit of collaboration. Keep on digging! 

And massive thanks to Wou-Wou to bringing his visual arts talent to the project! My goal is to eventually put together a reggae album (possibly a double album which will also include some reggae collaborations between Alpha Roots and friends including Jamie Rhind and Russ Sinfield) with all profits going to the Cancer Research Institute. Be on the look out for a possible dub version of Red Earth Clay as well!!!

Hey. Thanks for stopping by to see what’s up with me. I hope you are well. What I have noticed recently is, I am like an old dog now when I sleep. I close my eyes and dissolve into my dreams. There, I befriend people I may or may not not know... they may be essences of those past, or imaginative and archetypal beings of some significance. They may contain trace essences of people I know. I can fly, breathe under water, and I may on occasion travel the cosmos in a supernatural sense. I find the realm of dreams to be extraordinarily fascinating. A few years ago, I decided to begin to keep a dream journal which now is just shy of a hundred pages. A future book maybe? This song comes from an amalgamation of several recurring lucid dreams. Conquering and ruling cultures often oppress those they dominate. The oppressed, and those with less power, will always eventually seek justice, representation, and equal power from their subjugators. Those whose culture have been vilified, repressed, and appropriated can regain their power and love by learning about their past, choosing and identifying their cultural heroes for themselves, and restoring their appreciation and celebrations for their ancestors.  

May this song encourage an honest look into your past, acknowledging both the shadow and the light, appreciating the beauty of what was and is, and learning from accomplishments and mistakes to continue our evolution in becoming better co-creators with the planet.

I used some of a bass stem Alpha Roots sent me to make Red Earth Clay and I used the rest of the stem to make Sow Your Seeds. I have one unused bass and drum stem from Alpha Roots that I will make an old school hip hop song with and I may remix his original Hosanna bass stem one day to make a new reggae song. I may also ask Russ if I can make a version of Da Weed using Alpha Roots’ stems one day. After that, I may be complete unless I get gifted some Alpha Roots stems to play with. 

Huge thanks to Chiefo who set the original tone of this song which gave me inspiration for  the lyrics. Big ups to Fady, bit zone, and Lady of Fire Poetry for joining in on this project and adding their collective vibe. This is our late night, voice memo contribution to the global pile of indie-pop quarin-tunes.

"Marigolds" by Russ Stone and Annie Nirschel: they met at a murder mystery seahorse jamboree in 2004 and have been quarantining together ever since. They are not friends.

Marigolds (low-fi)

Firstly on easy listening 6/4 bars, I cut some notes out of the main theme so as to give it dynamism, and finally obtained a prime amalgam of 17 quarter notes. I hid any recognizable thing in the accompaniment, and for the organic lines (voice and guitars) I tried the strong rhythm would not fix too much the melodies, first paying a lot of attention, and finally ... just letting me go.

A month or so ago I did a remix of a wonderful track by Ughten... but there was something missing so have been mucking around for a little while and came up with this version. Here is some info on Ughten......
Ughten is collaboration between two friends Chase Rockwell and Electric Supply Station.
A friendship spanning 25 years built on music, dancing and confusing the minds of people we meet.
Ughten is created by the simple melodies and ideas crafted by Electric Supply Station being torn apart and reimagined by Chase Rockwell.
Collaboration with no limits.
