This is a song my mother, Mary McCarthy, used to sing, she liked it a lot. It’s a song about a dead mother and child, it’s a serious song. I learned very recently it was written by Deirdre Scanlan who recorded it on a CD called 'Speak Softly' in 1999.  Deirdre said she used to sing it regularly in the singer's club in Banagher and Birr.  I reckon my Uncle John (McCarthy) would have heard it there then taught it to my mother.
