Hope you brought your appetite for our first sound snack! Madison-based DJ, DJ AZZA cooks us up a vibey house mix full of aromatic moments and subtle spice. AZZA is a master of musical storytelling and this mix is a perfect example.

Recording from the sublime January 2025 edition of the Dreaming of a Disco party at The Cardinal Bar. Guests McGinnis and Natural Language each played a short solo set before taking the crowd on a journey through their extended headline b2b. All vinyl grooves for this party allowed our selectors to bring out some awesome rare tracks to share. Thanks so much to McGinnis and Natural Language for making this one of the best parties yet. DJ DH also played a few records to kick off the evening and dropped in a few selections later on as well. Timestamps below.

A festival highlight, this rare b2b unites two of Asia's top underground selectors. Mr. Ho, Klasse Wrecks head and resident at 宀 club, delivers raw, bass-heavy energy with unpredictable twists, while Tokyo’s Wada Yosuke, a vinyl purist and founder of Cowboy Family label, crafts hypnotic, evolving narratives through intricate rhythms and shifting atmospheres. 

Together, they create a four-hour sonic journey, rich in tension, texture, and euphoric release—an experience that embodies the fearless spirit of underground sound.

I was so excited when I saw my third episode of the radio show come through from my great friend Nathan aka Natural Language - knew it would be something sensational, unexpected, and filled with music music I've never heard before but that would make me smile - such a great presence on and off the decks!

Natural Language is a great DJ, a great party thrower (the founder of JAMS back in 2017!), and a great dude! He's always got his mind far in the distance seeing wild trends coming, exciting developments in music, and booking DJs and headliners before others have even heard of. He kept the vast majority of JAMS bookings for 30+ parties bouncing around his brain from the other side of the globe while living in Japan - takes a special mind to do that and you'll hear some of the musical musings of such a mind here in this mix!

In this mostly vinyl hybrid mix, we explore a labyrinth of rave-y, tribal, techno and house through the physical and emotional state of the man himself.  in his words:

"I was in a bit of a foul mood when I recorded this mix and wanted to finally play some tracks that I don't usually have the opportunity to show off - we can call it a "grumpy mix" of sorts. That influenced the selection as well as the mixing (and the bottle of wine I finished during the process certainly didn't help). Mix-wise, I feel like I took some risks that I usually wouldn't and had to accept a certain amount of imperfection, a skill that I need to practice more. That said, I'm very pleased with how it turned out and the very human nature of it."

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.
