RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2000). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come by.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. It's Theo through and through. Once again, he proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.

Water vapor is typically invisible to the naked eye. We refer to it’s concentrated state as humidity. During the high summer season in New York’s Hudson Valley, humidity reaches peak levels and is very much felt, and sometimes even visible. During these months, we experience a constant tension and release as humidity rises and falls. This tension persists until a massive thunderstorm erupts and releases both the moisture and our anxieties from the air.

Another common occurrence in New York’s Hudson Valley are musicians Booker Stardrum and Evan Shornstein. Hailing from opposite ends of the river valley, the two musicians found themselves orbiting the same region near the old capitol city of Kingston. Nudged together by a constellation of mutual friends and musical allies, Stardrum and Shornstein inevitably crossed paths. This led to a string of sessions in the hot, rain-slicked summer of 2022, broken up by dips in a nearby swimming hole.

Both percussionists-turned-producers, Evan and Booker quickly discovered a shared musical language. That summer, Evan was immersed in the Buchla Music Easel, coaxing fluid gestures from its analog circuitry, while Booker was crafting rhythms on a homemade instrument built from floorboards salvaged from his basement. These tactile tools were brought to life by the duo’s spirit of improvisation and appreciation of their recording environment: a moist enveloping forest. The rain often returned as they recorded, soaking the days and gently filtering into the sound.

A few years passed by and while the recordings stood still, the musicians did not. They performed a handful of improvised duets together, revealing their undeniable synchronicity where all things move in and out of “the groove” with ease. Now, as the seasons cycle back toward the same heat and high humidity in which this music was born, Rafting / Tall Grass is released.

Track one 'Lucio' starts off with laid back guitar and strong hand clap, this funky groove goes behind the main melody line giving it a great Cosmic / Psyche Rock feeling. For the fans of A Mountain of One, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, Worst Friends....

Next up sees 'Faber'. Light kick, pleasant catchy codes, Latin male vocal with a Bug Pipe sound – imagine the Balearic classic of ‘Stop Bajon’ by Tullo De Piscopo with a twisted modern feeling and you are half way there.
