The Technology EP is the third release from LDLDN (NTS Radio, Spacebass) on his Natural Frequency Records imprint, following on from the success of ‘Make Time’ in Summer 2021.

This abstract, bass-heavy 4-tracker riffs on the idea that modern technology enhances, dominates and changes our lives. Technology shapes us as much as we shape it.

The EP opens with the title track “Machine Code”, an 808-driven house jam wrapped in LDLDN’s typically layered, lush synth chords. Front foot and futuristic.

“Technology” takes a classic deep house workout and heightens it with an elastic bassline and crystalline piano riffs. A stuttering, pitched down vocal reminds the listener that electronic music has no boundaries.

‘Haptic Feedback’ drops the pace but increases the intensity, with a growling, rolling bass riff punctuated by heavy, doubled up kick drums. 90s-style key stabs push and pull throughout a track that has a weird energy of its own.

The EP closes out with ‘Digital Love’, an elevated love letter to technology. Pure movement, driven by a jacked up bassline and soaring keyboards that speak to digital desires.

The Marshlands EP is the first release from Crooked Finger (SZE Records, Secretsundaze Studios) on Natural Frequency Records.

The tracks are connected to and inspired by the artist’s trips to the North Essex coastline, the landscape and the marshlands of that area… “The marshes have this isolated and lonely beauty, they're kind of inaccessible but alluring and totally unlike the seaside beaches where the majority of people flock. All of this finds its way into these pieces of music.” 

“Goose” is a real burner, taking its time to build the intensity with dub chords, rapid snares and tape FX recorded via an old WEM Copicat, then the 303 brings us home. Inspired by long walks contemplating that feeling of pure power in nature.

Next up is “APR”, full of rust and dust, sounding like it was pulled from deep in the mud having washed up to shore years ago. 

“EightyEight” takes to the floor with a big ol bass line driving the track and drums that feel right at home clattering around a ‘95 warehouse at 5am. 

The closer of the EP, “Orange Wine”, is a moody house number with an arpeggiator ear-worm backed up by more big bass and that vocal sample that keeps going. This one connects the dots between the comforting isolation of the dance and the marsh.

LDLDN’s ‘Technology EP’ released on Natural Frequency Records in 2022 received plenty of justified praise from DJs, record buyers and everyone in between.

So, like any self-respecting technologist, it made sense to give the record a reboot….an upgrade. Get it running in 4K rather than HD. Overclock the processor a bit. 

Brought into the lab to do this are three of the UK’s most respected producers, who have put their own unique spin on the original EP and taken it into a deeper dancefloor territory.

Press play and first up is Mr Beatnick (Mythstery Records, NTS Radio) going direct-to-disc with his remix of ‘Technology’. It’s got that ‘New Jersey bump’, with intricate, flowing drums wrapping around his signature synth-work.

‘Machine Code’ is given the deepest of deep house treatments by Galaxy Brain (Soho Radio), with a real Larry Heard feel about it - the highest praise possible. Twinkling piano, sprinkled over soft pads and shuffling drums make this remix utterly listenable.  

Flipping over the cassette you’ll find a typically club-ready remix of ‘Haptic Feedback’ from Drumskull (Hooversound / Aaja Music / Threads). His bassy, breakbeat driven sound perfectly re-interprets the original, serving up a wild, bone-shaking breakdown that needs to be heard loud.

Finally, Natural Frequency label boss LDLDN rethinks ‘Digital Love’, throwing it into a more Detroit techno mode with his usual soaring chords and uncompromising drum patterns. Watch out for the change midway through!

The EP is totally a reflection of the Natural Frequency label - fun and emotive music.
