The Near-Dance Experience

Franck Collin, aka Fleck E.S.C, is an Electro artist originally from France currently living in the buzzing metropolis of Tokyo, Japan.
Franck’s earlier experience playing bass and drums in bands, and his love of horror, science fiction and B-movies, naturally drove him to the Electro music scene.

Additionally, Fleck E.S.C has influences rooted in New Wave, Contemporary, Techno and Ambient music.

Fleck E.S.C tries to avoid the cliches of the Electro genre, leaning more toward the spooky side of horror and sci-fi and the cheap retro sounds in tribute of the movies he loves.

Never too serious, unpretentious, and always striving for fresh sounds, Fleck E.S.C’s music aims to distract the body and the brain.

Franck Collin has also worked in movie productions as a camera assistant .
He has also created music for Lipton Cafe Shibuya in Tokyo, theatre performances in Berlin, Germany and the soundtrack for the film,”Astroboy in Robotland”, by renowned director of “Delicatessen” and “The Lost Children”, Marc Caro.

He has also performed as Fleck E.S.C in a number of venues in Europe and Japan.

1. Which artists has influenced you the most?

- A lot of artists has influenced me over the years. For the ambient side of me are Brian Eno, The Orb and many movie soundtracks. Then I really got into Electro through a label called Electrolux where I discovered Anthony Rother, Kraftwerk Dr Scissors to name a few. But now, I realize that I am not very into the most purest form of electro cause I find it a bit always the same sound wise and composition wise. I realize then that Richard.D James is my ultimate master in terms of melodies, textures and innovation. Like Vibert is another guy I love just because he understands the vast possibilities of many electronic music genres. I really love all the Warp label artists from the 90s as well. 
 
2. What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- Few next releases planned for next year are so far an LP with Diffuse Reality and an EP with Science Cult label. I am also finishing the mix for a 13 track album that isn’t dance music. It’s more electronica, IDM, ambient,. I haven’t contacted any label so far for this project. 
 
3. Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- Back to question 1. I love the 90s Warp releases. But also I’m a big fan of DMX Krew and Dopplereffekt, Cylob and I’m rediscovering the Rephlex label. This label is everything I love about electronic music. It’s crazy, innovating, beautiful, bold, always surprising.  
 
4. What inspires you now to create music?

- I can be inspired by anything. My mood, the news, a software, a piece of gear, a sample, a sound, a movie, a painting, anything really. 
 
5. What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I’m a very basic guy when it comes to make music. I use both softwares and hardwares. Digital and analog, a guitar and a bass guitar as well from time to time. I just okay things, practice and record, then I arrange the tracks. I mainly work with audio. The rhythmic part is made with a Nord Drum, a Elektron Digitakt and Model Cycles and a Polyend Tracker. For the synth parts I use A Dave Smith Mopho keyboard, Arturia Micro brute, arturia Micro Freak, an ARP Odyssey, ARP 2600 ( TTSH), a Moog Mother 32, à Moog Matriarch, a Sequencial OB6, à Roland Juno Alpha 2, a Korg Minilogue xd and few effect pedals. In the box I work with Aleton Live, soundforge and ACID. Old school ;-)

Central Processing Unit, commonly referred to as CPU Records, is an independent British record label, founded in Sheffield in 2012, specialising in various forms of Electronic Music. CPSmith (Chris Smith) is the man responsible for it’s existence. A respected player in the Sheffield scene since the early days of Warp Records, Chris, heavily influenced by the Electro, Techno, early House and Bleep sounds from this era, has notoriously carried forward the legacy of a city that deserves huge credit for it’s contribution to the UK scene, and thus the country's reputation as being one of the pivotal hubs of the World.

We were honoured to collaborate with Chris and CPU for an unforgettable event at FOLD in November 2019. Chris formed part of one of our biggest ever lineups which featured The Advent and E.R.P. aka Convextion, along with front-line CPU and Natural Selection artists, including Plant43, 96 Back, Annie Hall, Kodah and Osc Kins.

Chris’ mix could be described as a history lesson in quality electronic music, but streaked with modern, advanced productions from his label and closely relevant artists.
