Famous for being the creator of Australia’s eclectic and magical music festival, Return to Rio, Ricky Cooper first made a name for himself back home in London. After launching the Homegrown parties in the Europe in the early 90’s, Ricky and good mate Mr C, were behind the first-ever online radio station Gaia Live. Ricky was also a regular behind the decks at London’s most infamous nightclubs, The End, The Cross, The Rocket and Bug Bar. From there, the offer of residency at Club de Baia, tempted Ricky to move to Portugal where people would travel from across Europe to witness their wild beach parties.

After falling in love with Sydney’s laid-back lifestyle, Ricky settled in Bondi Beach. Here he spent years hosting and making a name for his Bondi FM radio show, and, during its prime, taking over Australia’s most renowned club: Home. Not content with his extensive music commitments, he started a bar called Mocean, on iconic Bondi Beach. It wasn’t long before the queues for Mocean were out the door and around the corner, and international bands and DJs were dropping by whenever they were in town.  

There aren’t many DJs Ricky hasn’t shared the stage with, including Carl Cox, Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Express-2, Steve Lawler and a back-to-back session with Eric Morillo, just to name a few. Ricky’s also no stranger when it comes to the celebrity circuit – with Kate Moss and Jade Jagger famously flying him out to LA to play at their private party. These days though, you’re more likely to find him directing the mischief and mayhem that goes down at Return to Rio’s annual festival and sporadic side-shows. 

What led Ricky to dream up his own music festival? Experiencing Burning Man many years ago, reignited his passion for the deep dreamy signature sound of The Playa, and inspired him to bring a taste of it back home to Australia. “It’s the idea of bringing like-minded people together, and exposing them to quality new sounds and artists from all around the globe” he says. 

Recently Return to Rio to has attracted a multitude of world-wide sensations from Lee Burridge, Dixon, Carl Cox, Sasha and Tale Of Us to Atish, Acid Pauli, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, The Martinez Brothers, Greg Wilson, LTJ Bukem, Ronnie Size and The Ratpack. To name just a few. Return to Rio is a world-class event that has a reputation for delivering solid music with soul done passionately.

Sydney's Steve Marx has been a regular fixture on the London club scene for over a decade now after making the move from his hometown in 1996. A regular on the Sydney scene, Steve could be found at the infamous Hordern Pavillion parties in the late eighties and early nineties where he developed his interest and passion for electronic music by leading the charge at clubs such as Base and The Front. Having made the move to London, he quickly discovered a taste for nights like Malibu Stacy, Tyrant & Renaissance and soon got himself in amongst the smaller nights where an exciting underground scene was developing alongside the rise of the superclub. 

In 1999 he met Ben Clarke and Francis Mallinson and the Synchronize parties were born. I first met him in 2002, where he could be often be found in Plastic Fantastic Records or at Digression in Soho, where up and coming DJs mixed with other arty types sharing a beer and common musical ideas.

Maybe it was that year that made the man and alongside Nick Dawes, he co-organised the Shadow 001 event at the Fortress Studios for World DJ day, playing alongside Rowan Blades, Paolo Mojo and Jonathan Lisle in an event where proceeds went to The Nordoff Robbins Children’s Charity.
Guest slots at Renaissance @The Ministry of Sound, and many of London’s smaller cooler underground nights began coming as well monthly gigs in Amsterdam, Zurich and further afield across Europe became the norm, playing alongside Sasha, Nick Warren & to name but a few.

Often specialising in the closing set, Steve knows how to work a room, through skillful programming, expert track selection and above all tight mixing and is always an entertainer, both behind the decks and on the dancefloor.
Fast forward to 2016 and Steve after a musically hiatus is now firmly planted in his hometown and birthplace Sydney. With music on his mind, Steve is on the rise again, supporting John Digweed for T-1000 events earlier in the year and most recently the birth of Jigsaw with musical aficionado’s and partners Eddy Wells, Neil Smith and Kate Bailey through Jigsaw will bring something very special to Sydney’s nightlife. 

2017 has been nothing short amazing for Steve. January started out with him warming up for the might Hernan Cattaneo @ the official Electric Gardens afterparty as well as with Guy j, Guy Mantzur & Eelke Kliejn, so much so that an impromptu b2b took place with Eelke on that very evening, something for the musical CV some would say. As the summer season kicked in for 2018/2018 off Steve made his debut at the infamous Return to Rio.

Steve has now firmly placed himself as a regular on the Sydney circuit with performances at Electric Gardens in 2018 and then on warm up duties for the legendary Maestro Hernan Cattaneo, his second year in a row @The Rio Revel.  You’ll certainly being seeing more of this loveable Australian, that much is assured.

Steve Marx - Deep Seahorse Podcast #094

Took the last few days to piece back together the set from The Brooklyn Mirage recently, opening for Sasha and Digweed for what ended up being a Twilo reunion on so many levels, with much of the old crew from those days in the late 90s making the trek for what was a special show from start to finish.  The somewhat older, more diverse crowd came early and stayed until closing, with top notch production from the Avant Gardner/Brooklyn Mirage, incredible KV2 sound and just smiles all around throughout the night.  Many thanks to all those involved and to those that considered myself at the top of the list for warming up the night.

Hailing from the Netherlands, building a relationship with music through an array of equipment where he developed the hallmark of his analogue/digital sound.
Never one to stick to a particular stylistic blueprint, Navar effortlessly melds elements of minimal, techno, progressive and electronica. He has continually impressed since a debut on Klopfgeist imprint in 2010, building a highly impressive discography of productions for Lost & Found, microCastle, Replug, Balance Music, Sound Avenue, Proton, Higher States and more. 
His music routinely earns the praise of Hernan Cattaneo, Guy J, Guy Mantzur, Sasha, Henry Saiz and a host of other respected industry figures.

Electronic music luminaries Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Chaim, 16 Bit Lolitas, Boris Werner and YokoO chose to remix the Dutch artist's creations, all of which received critical and commercial acclaim. Always looking to further his creative avenues, Navar collaborates with like minded musicians when the synergy is right. Being locked away in the studio in the early days, have led him to heights that he never could have imagined at the time. Navar set out to carve his own unique path in the world of electronic music.
Inspiration for the Dutch artist comes from many facets and moments in life, as he describes “The inspiration comes from the escape I create when I make music. Every project is a new journey and doors to different sonic avenues open with each one. I step away from reality and enter a world of imagination, surrealism and (yet to discover) forgotten dreams". 
It's no accident that Navar's contemporaries remark on the soulful qualities in his music. His inner feelings have helped create a uniquely deep and recognizable sound, as he states “My music is a reflection of my feelings, it comes from a genuine place that I want people to connect with. I feel comfortable expressing myself through music”.
Navar's emotive creations have already cast lasting memories for electronic music fans across the globe. As he goes forward in his journey through sound his passion continues to grow and there's no telling how far his creative talents will reach.
