Recorded live at Output on November 8th 2013.  Opening set for John Digweed as part of Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival.

Not much to be said for this other than thanks to Diggers and Output for the chance to do this again.  There really is no better opportunity to take some creative license and really experiment with the dancefloor than when opening for someone with as storied a career as John Digweed.  I hope that comes through in this mix so enjoy the trip.  There's a few throwbacks and nods here to the old days.

The set didn't really come across like it sounded and felt that night in the recording, so i went back and filled it out to reflect a longer slower burning opening that would have suited the night best.

I always thought of the last mix Rain Logic as being part of a set that covers a full range of experiences. Crafting this as the followup came out of exploring lots of older music while sorting through old vinyl as well as exploring for new sounds. One of my favorite artists, without surprise, is Oliver Lieb, who through his LSG alias expanded the boundaries of techno at the time with his elements of trance, which, before it became a polarizing genre, was an apt description of an encapsulated feeling.  As such, listening to his LP "Train of Thought" many times over, and revisiting James Holden's Balance mix, this followup "Storm Logic" takes a similar direction of trance music without trance records.  Its a heavily layered mix that punishes at times but always has a push and pull for relief from the chaotic moments.

There's a number of different approaches that i find effective when it comes to opening sets and my previous sets with Digweed have been more of maintaining a slow simmer in the crowd and having a push/pull feel with the energy of the room.  I've always planned in a few longer stretches of ambience or musical interludes to provide contrast and to explore musical side routes that you don't get to hear in a typical set.

This set is none of that.  Fully expecting a weeknight crowd to be amped and ready to go just two days before New Years, i gathered my chug-a-thon tracks (yes, thats my mp3 description), edited out most of the breakdowns, and tried to keep the music on an ever upwards climb without ever boiling over.   And the Xone DB4, while it may have its own sound quality issues, is a beast of a creative tool.  I can see why Digweed uses it, as it forces me to pull mine out of its case, and get deep into it.

It's been an exhilarating, nerve-wracking and musically soul-searching month putting together my half of this episode. John Digweed & Naveen G - Transitions 599 | Feb 19 2016

I was at first hesitant to post this recording, for fear of being too singular in my recent set postings, but i changed my mind as i think it represents a good closure of the events of the past few months.  This set from Output was a far different affair than the last few, having returned to a slow methodical pace, in order to let John fully explore over his subsequent 5 hour set(!).   Opening dj sets are odd things that can be plodding and boring on one extreme and too much, too soon on the other extreme.  Toeing the fine line of maintaining tension takes lots of preparation, digging for those odd musical gems and most of all, restraint in front of a crowd that is almost always looking for something with more energy than what you're playing.  While often called a thankless job, I think as the headliner DJs return to playing longer sets, the effects will become more tangible or hopefully appreciated by all (and not just the old heads).  This has all been hashed out before so i refer back to the classic RA article from years back, in case anyone has missed it (https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/1095).

I've learned a lot from playing and conversing with Diggers the last few times as well as contributing my episode of Transitions and now its time to move on to other little projects.  Until the next time he rolls through town, that is.  Utmost respect for the man, he's smashed it every time i've seen him the last few months.  And we can only hope he airs some of the Output set on Transitions in the next few months as he was in top form.

Live at Output (opening for Tale of Us) [December 2016]

Recorded live at The Cityfox Experience at the Brooklyn Mirage, July 1, 2017 (also playing that night were Stephan Bodzin, Recondite and Tale of Us).

I knew I would have my work cut out for me with this time slot given the large difference in styles between the preceding and following artists, so this may sound like a peaktime set in reverse.  However, as most of you who follow my mixes know, i tend to be quite long-winded in my approach, so fitting a meaningful progression while keeping the energy high, within the confines of an unexpectedly shortened timeslot was a difficult but fruitful exercise.  Coupled with trying to reconnect my guitar pedals at the last minute (with only half success),  it was a stressful start but i got into a comfortable zone quickly.  Its a pretty bumpy ride through a number of styles of heavier techno and electro, but i'm never one to play it safe.  probably shows with the BoC stylings of the closing as well.

As a token of thanks to all those who've helped me reach 5000 followers here on Soundcloud, here's a live recording from our Manjumasi label night post-ADE at Kater Blau, where we took over the Kiosk for a full night with the label artists and team.  

I've been exploring a lot of different directions this year as i come up on almost 20 years of djing, having seemingly gone full techno over the last few mixes. Many thanks to Seth Hosko and Bang On! for the chance to take part in this mini-stage.  The empty grain silo was a great respite from the usual madness of a full on festival, and having a space such as this is an underutilized resource during these longer parties.  had a chance to explore lots of field recordings and samples that i've been collecting over the years as well as some of my favorite pieces, drifting into some IDM and dub.  next time, i'll probably feel more comfortable bringing some guitar pedals and a small eurorack for fun.

Naveen G - Live At Visionnaire Avant Gardner - Ambient Set [December 2018]

Took the last few days to piece back together the set from The Brooklyn Mirage recently, opening for Sasha and Digweed for what ended up being a Twilo reunion on so many levels, with much of the old crew from those days in the late 90s making the trek for what was a special show from start to finish.  The somewhat older, more diverse crowd came early and stayed until closing, with top notch production from the Avant Gardner/Brooklyn Mirage, incredible KV2 sound and just smiles all around throughout the night.  Many thanks to all those involved and to those that considered myself at the top of the list for warming up the night.

This past March, i had the amazing consecutive opportunities to open for two of my largest influences, new and old: Patrice Baumel and John Digweed.  Taking the style and sound of the night with Patrice at The End Up in SF for the Play party, the set naturally evolved into a four deck version  when i opened two weeks later for Digweed in NY at Output.  It reflects a sound that i would play everytime, everywhere if given a chance.  A melting pot of tracks, new and old, blurring a few genre lines, and ultimately trying to maintain that slow burning groove to set up the headliner.  Its a set i'm very proud of, and i have to give many thanks to those who came to both nights and all the people that made it happen (Danny Howells, John Digweed, Simar, Gunita, Shawn and Patrice).

Naveen G is no newcomer to the scene having made his start in 1996 hosting his own show on the influential WNUR 89.3FM Streetbeat Radio that launched the careers of many of his peers originating in Chicago.
