Recorded live at Output on November 8th 2013.  Opening set for John Digweed as part of Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival.

Not much to be said for this other than thanks to Diggers and Output for the chance to do this again.  There really is no better opportunity to take some creative license and really experiment with the dancefloor than when opening for someone with as storied a career as John Digweed.  I hope that comes through in this mix so enjoy the trip.  There's a few throwbacks and nods here to the old days.

Opening for Digweed again this past December 2023 at Musica was again a great night although the opening set was quite short.  The set didn't really come across like it sounded and felt that night in the recording, so i went back and filled it out to reflect a longer slower burning opening that would have suited the night best.

probably one of the most enduring mixes i've ever done.a taste of something different.done back in January of 2009 when it was really hard to find stuff like this.

"It oscillates back and forth, and when you think it's veering into sentimentality, it submerges back beneath the waves and a backbone of dark, driving funk carries it on.And the last hour is possibly the best peak set I've ever heard. Unabashed, glorious, and life-affirming.The run-up to the peak starts as the first chords kick in after the Romantics.You know it's coming.The first surge of adrenaline.Then the high-hats carry it upward and you think it's going to top out, only to realize there's a train coming, and it's that funky baseline of the samos track that brings it back to the ground.It progressively gets more introspective and brooding, but the restlessness of the baseline keeps you moving.By the time the second Parallels track has gone on for a few minutes, I can sense it coming.the vocoder comes and goes, then first the lyrics break, then the first synth stabs, then those 3 first 3 chords from Business Woman appear - and then the kickdrum &amp; twinkly starlight shit finally arrives and the adrenaline starts flowing again.It pulses up and and down, teasing synths... and then the sleezy sweaty Vega vocals swoop down with a pure 80s break and it's a sleezy loft party in the East Village, circa 1980.Then when it all starts becoming a bit much, the roof opens up, Vega washes away, and makes room for the Nuyorkican strings hook and twinkly stars of the Worship track relentlessly driving upwards.Everyone is exhausted, but the best is yet to come, and everyone feels it.Then it dissolves into a Moroder base, the crisp sober vocals, and you know the momentary lapse is only setting up base camp, a starting point to make the final ascent.The climb starts with Anoraak remix, then just before 95 minutes, the high repeated synth note heralds the Arrival.It's here.The sun.Swoosh.The first time on MDMA.What in any other setting would be a cheesy sentimental mess, is transfigured, made sublime.Part of it is because it's pitched way up or has the mids cut down low, making it more urgent and cutting out the sticky heaviness of the original.But make no mistake, it's the journey, the build up, and the fact that it fulfills the "perfect night" promised in the first 2 minutes of the mix, that makes the Fear of Tigers shine brighter than any other peak.It's unabashedly joyful and full of wonder, sentimental in the biggest sense, but free from any sense of bathos.The world is good.On the hundredth listen, I still get the same surge of joy that I got from the first time.And then Nightdrive with You is the afterglow.Tinged with sadness, and contemplative of the preceding two hours of music.It looks through bright, sad eyes into the future.What goes up must come down, but for now we will keep the party going, keep the flame burning.

I always thought of the last mix Rain Logic as being part of a set that covers a full range of experiences. Crafting this as the followup came out of exploring lots of older music while sorting through old vinyl as well as exploring for new sounds. One of my favorite artists, without surprise, is Oliver Lieb, who through his LSG alias expanded the boundaries of techno at the time with his elements of trance, which, before it became a polarizing genre, was an apt description of an encapsulated feeling.  As such, listening to his LP "Train of Thought" many times over, and revisiting James Holden's Balance mix, this followup "Storm Logic" takes a similar direction of trance music without trance records.  Its a heavily layered mix that punishes at times but always has a push and pull for relief from the chaotic moments.

There's a number of different approaches that i find effective when it comes to opening sets and my previous sets with Digweed have been more of maintaining a slow simmer in the crowd and having a push/pull feel with the energy of the room.  I've always planned in a few longer stretches of ambience or musical interludes to provide contrast and to explore musical side routes that you don't get to hear in a typical set.

This set is none of that.  Fully expecting a weeknight crowd to be amped and ready to go just two days before New Years, i gathered my chug-a-thon tracks (yes, thats my mp3 description), edited out most of the breakdowns, and tried to keep the music on an ever upwards climb without ever boiling over.   And the Xone DB4, while it may have its own sound quality issues, is a beast of a creative tool.  I can see why Digweed uses it, as it forces me to pull mine out of its case, and get deep into it.

Transitions 599 [Feb 2016] *no voiceover*

I was at first hesitant to post this recording, for fear of being too singular in my recent set postings, but i changed my mind as i think it represents a good closure of the events of the past few months.  This set from Output was a far different affair than the last few, having returned to a slow methodical pace, in order to let John fully explore over his subsequent 5 hour set(!).   Opening dj sets are odd things that can be plodding and boring on one extreme and too much, too soon on the other extreme.  Toeing the fine line of maintaining tension takes lots of preparation, digging for those odd musical gems and most of all, restraint in front of a crowd that is almost always looking for something with more energy than what you're playing.  While often called a thankless job, I think as the headliner DJs return to playing longer sets, the effects will become more tangible or hopefully appreciated by all (and not just the old heads).  This has all been hashed out before so i refer back to the classic RA article from years back, in case anyone has missed it (https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/1095).

I've learned a lot from playing and conversing with Diggers the last few times as well as contributing my episode of Transitions and now its time to move on to other little projects.  Until the next time he rolls through town, that is.  Utmost respect for the man, he's smashed it every time i've seen him the last few months.  And we can only hope he airs some of the Output set on Transitions in the next few months as he was in top form.

Live at Output (opening for Tale of Us) [December 2016]

Recorded live at The Cityfox Experience at the Brooklyn Mirage, July 1, 2017 (also playing that night were Stephan Bodzin, Recondite and Tale of Us).

I knew I would have my work cut out for me with this time slot given the large difference in styles between the preceding and following artists, so this may sound like a peaktime set in reverse.  However, as most of you who follow my mixes know, i tend to be quite long-winded in my approach, so fitting a meaningful progression while keeping the energy high, within the confines of an unexpectedly shortened timeslot was a difficult but fruitful exercise.  Coupled with trying to reconnect my guitar pedals at the last minute (with only half success),  it was a stressful start but i got into a comfortable zone quickly.  Its a pretty bumpy ride through a number of styles of heavier techno and electro, but i'm never one to play it safe.  probably shows with the BoC stylings of the closing as well.

As a token of thanks to all those who've helped me reach 5000 followers here on Soundcloud, here's a live recording from our Manjumasi label night post-ADE at Kater Blau, where we took over the Kiosk for a full night with the label artists and team.  

I've been exploring a lot of different directions this year as i come up on almost 20 years of djing, having seemingly gone full techno over the last few mixes. Many thanks to Seth Hosko and Bang On! for the chance to take part in this mini-stage.  The empty grain silo was a great respite from the usual madness of a full on festival, and having a space such as this is an underutilized resource during these longer parties.  had a chance to explore lots of field recordings and samples that i've been collecting over the years as well as some of my favorite pieces, drifting into some IDM and dub.  next time, i'll probably feel more comfortable bringing some guitar pedals and a small eurorack for fun.

Naveen G - Live At Visionnaire Avant Gardner - Ambient Set [December 2018]

Took the last few days to piece back together the set from The Brooklyn Mirage recently, opening for Sasha and Digweed for what ended up being a Twilo reunion on so many levels, with much of the old crew from those days in the late 90s making the trek for what was a special show from start to finish.  The somewhat older, more diverse crowd came early and stayed until closing, with top notch production from the Avant Gardner/Brooklyn Mirage, incredible KV2 sound and just smiles all around throughout the night.  Many thanks to all those involved and to those that considered myself at the top of the list for warming up the night.

Naveen G - Live At The Cityfox Odyssey NYE [December 2019]

This past March, i had the amazing consecutive opportunities to open for two of my largest influences, new and old: Patrice Baumel and John Digweed.  Taking the style and sound of the night with Patrice at The End Up in SF for the Play party, the set naturally evolved into a four deck version  when i opened two weeks later for Digweed in NY at Output.  It reflects a sound that i would play everytime, everywhere if given a chance.  A melting pot of tracks, new and old, blurring a few genre lines, and ultimately trying to maintain that slow burning groove to set up the headliner.  Its a set i'm very proud of, and i have to give many thanks to those who came to both nights and all the people that made it happen (Danny Howells, John Digweed, Simar, Gunita, Shawn and Patrice).

Ok Cool at TV Lounge in Detroit during Movement 2013.  For an outdoor morning set on the patio, the vibe was a proggy version of detroit techno soul. Naveen G is no newcomer to the scene having made his start in 1996 hosting his own show on the influential WNUR 89.3FM Streetbeat Radio that launched the careers of many of his peers originating in Chicago.  Having caught the attention of world class DJs with his very first productions which were licensed to the seminal Global Underground series, Naveen G has fostered his own sound, one that is consistently hailed as exploring the late night side of the dancefloor, straying far from the conventional formula, yet still garnering acclaim from DJs and clubbers alike.
 
From breaks to techno and everything in between, or manning the ambient room for many hours, Naveen G's productions reflect his DJing ability to adapt to the room and the headliner, drawing on his diverse range.  Equally comfortable warming up a room properly as a resident for Cityfox NYC or playing on his own deep into the night, Naveen has brought his unique and varied style to the unsuspecting dancefloors across the world from South America to Asia, where they have learned to expect the unexpected.  His breadth of knowledge about dance music from years of digging lends to his role as A&R for Manjumasi Records alongside Atish and Mark Slee.  With support for his productions from Sasha, John Digweed, Satoshi Tomiie,  Hernan Cattaneo and others, as well as gigs at beachside bars to international festivals such as ADE, BPM, and WMC, alongside a wide range of DJs such as Tale of Us, Adriatique, Mano Le Tough,  Cassy, and Danny Howells, Naveen G continues to gain new followers across the board.
