Dandelion decay [naviarhaiku241]

This week's haiku is by Jack Kerouac:
"Nightfall, / boy smashing dandelions / with a stick"

Well, I suppose I could have tried to capture imagery of the boy directly, but instead I kept that image in mind (aided by my own memories of enacting that very scene some 35 years ago) and tried to write the underscore for the footage playing in my head. I aimed at the essence of the long summer evenings of childhood, of dawdling along to avoid going home and hence to bed. I wanted to bring out the stillness of the surroundings, that sense of darkness creeping in, and the warm melancholia of nostalgia.

The track itself was made by adding three sequences together, clocked by an A-171-2 VC Slew - which is self-cycling, and is having the rise and fall times altered by the pitch of the sequence so the tempo is not rigid and there is movement. This sequence was attenuated in 4 different ways, with the attenuated signals being quantized to a major scale before going on to drive the voices. As well as driving the four oscillators that make up the chord, the most constrained version drives the bass voice that comes in gradually, and the third version also drives a higher voice that comes in gradually. There is also a self contained voice on the 0-coast providing random twinkles and lights.
