A swirl of Rhodes, tape delay, and pedals, 'Lullaby' is more a dreamscape than a track. Inspired by work from acclaimed illustrator David Polonsky, 'Lullaby' is a sonic map of that perpetual dusk in which the tender of heart dwell. Cascading handclaps, delicate bubbles and squeaks, and a characteristically spare kick are cut through by a punchy live bassline that exudes more humanity than a million synthesizers could ever imagine. For a sense of the mood just imagine sweet caresses through a fog that barely obscures your lover's face, or an old teen romance on faded VHS. When vocalist Sammy D, sounding more pensive and breathless than ever before, obliquely asks an unnamed someone, 'you're not a weapon, are you' one wonders if he's not thinking about PillowTalk's own ability to destroy our own expectations about what dance music is supposed to be.

For all the sullen moodiness of 'Lullaby,' the EPs B-side, 'We All Have Rhythm,' brings a return of the sassy, white-boy R&B swagger we've come to know and love from the boys. No more feeling sorry for ourselves, we're all invited to sing along over a slice of uplifting electronic psych-funk that is sure to wake up any slumbering afterparty.

Following EPs and 12”s on Wolf + Lamb, W+L Black, Life And Death, Bang The Box and their debut on Visionquest, PillowTalk present their debut LP, ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’. As much a soundtrack to long nights as it is lazy days, there is something about the record that spans everything you want from the band: sun-splashed jams, peak-time party tunes and low-lit moments of intimacy.

The album has been a work in progress since the boys formed the group in their San Francisco studio and was recorded last year during a month at PDX Studios in Portland, Oregon, which sits overlooking the city and the gorgeous Mount Hood. It was a session that allowed the band to work communally, drawing from various ideas, as well as influences, which include the vast Americana of Bruce Springsteen, the wrought post dubstep of James Blake, the deep soul of Sam Cooke and the incendiary jazz of John Coltrane.

‘We All Have Rhythm’ is an anything-could-happen-tonight tune that you’ll want to be listening to at 11pm on a Friday; ‘Lullaby’ is the perfect dose of deepness for a loved-up 6am dancefloor; the off-kilter R&B ghetto tech of ‘4 Walls’ will fit the vibe at a woozy afterparty; and ‘LA To The Bay’ will rouse you and make you feel good the morning after as the sun comes up. This is music to suit all times, because that’s what PillowTalk is all about.

The broad nature of ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’ came about because Sammy D (vocals), Michael Tello (producer) and Ryan Williams (multi-instrumentalist) pulled the record together from melodies thought up while on long plane journeys, impromptu jam throw downs in Berlin apartments and musical sketches created during long nights into early morning studio sessions sharing bottles of vodka. For instance, ‘4 Walls’ happened during a late night session, with the band throwing ideas around and with friends DOP and Navid Izadi. “We wanted to do something that wasn't a 122bpm 4/4 kick drum track, challenge ourselves musically and lyrically, so we made the song at 144 beats per minute but still gave it a soul vibe,” says Michael. The song took an hour and a half to write, whipped up in the heat and energy of the moment.

This organic way of working was what brought PillowTalk together in the first place. They formed after the three were mucking around on the baby grand piano in Ryan’s kitchen. A guitar and a Wurlitzer, some off-hand vocals, were thrown into the mix in true Doo-wop style. The EP, ‘The Come Back’, dropped on Life And Death in 2011 with their hit single 'Soft' and things started to roll.

Breakout hit ‘Far From Home’ on the ‘Far From Heaven’ EP in the same year was followed by the cheeky ‘Soul Edits’ 12” for Wolf + Lamb’s W+L Black imprint in 2012 which featured their classic remix of Bobby Hebb's, 'Sunny'. Then in 2013, the single ‘Lullaby’ backed with ’We All Have Rhythm’ dropped, giving a clear indication of how ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi' would sound: warm, lush and dreamy.

Though they’ve only been releasing records since 2011, the three have known each other for years. They met through djing parties and have been neighbors and even roommates. ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’ sees them stepping into their own as a band, a statement of intent born from the highs and lows of their loves, laughs and heartbreaks thus far.

We grow everyday as musicians, artists, and creators, if not, you're doing something wrong. Much of the music I have made loses its charm to me by the time it finally comes off the presses, but something about this song has always resonated in my heart.

Perhaps it always brings me back to the debauchery of the night it was made. Drinking countless stolen bottles of wine under a full moon with Tanner in Majorca. Aimlessly throwing bocci balls as though competing at shot-put in the Olympics, all the while listening back to our rough arrangement on repeat. Maybe it's because it's the first song I really sang on, and the words we came up with meant quite a lot to us, and still do... even if the lyrics are indecipherable to those that didn't write them. Sorry, I promise my voice and recording technics have gotten much better the last couple years.

But, it's been two years since that night. And, as much as I will miss the amazing audience response to those 808 intro toms below Tanner panting, after two years of playing it in the live set, I decided it needed a bit of a revamp. A revamp heading in the direction of my current live set, and eventual album.

So, last week I picked up my parlor acoustic, called my friend Andrew Lynch (amazing bass player on my album), and Dave Robertson (Cameo Culture, and my amazing producer over the last year), and we sat down to jam on the rough sketches I'd been toying with. This is what happened, hope y'all dig....

With a sound that calls back to 90s latin house and freestyle energies, “Messin” is a nostalgic club track that tells the story of a girl who wants to have her cake and eat it, too, and a man who ain’t having any more of it. Lush synth pads wrap around a nasty bassline to take things immediately into party town. The deal is sealed with big vocals from Izadi himself and Body Language’s Angelica Bess, topped off with some live percussion and housey piano keys. The "Shade’s Up Dub” digs even deeper for a drugged out sunrise scorcher that wouldn’t be out of place on the record store shelves of yesteryear.

“Hard 2 Say” takes a different route, mixing analog synth drums and yearning vocoder verses with Elfman-esque choir chords and G-funk synth leads to create a mysterious sound that’s equal parts romantic and tough. “Messin” get’s a remix from the dynamite disco troupe, Midnight Magic, that sounds a bit like Larry Heard if he were speeding down the Pacific Coast Highway in a white convertible. “Hard 2 Say” gets a remix from Funkadelic friends, FSQ, lacing it up with live drums, bass and guitar to take the track into deep intergalactic funk territory.

Good Life was a remix of sorts of TS Monk's "Bon Bon Vie", albeit taking it into a more moody, desperate feel than the upbeat skate jam that was the original. Similarly, Lost in the Fold Pt. 2 was a version of Lost in the Fold, off my first EP with Double Standard, that I played live, mixing some parts of various songs I'd been working on with some samples and the vocals from the original. It's a more tropical, Grace-Jonesy interpretation of the OG, but still has some of that melancholy feel." - Navid

We’re talking true funk, soul, disco, hip-hop, music from the heart, from the streets, from real people with real emotions – intertwined with the analogue power of synthesizers and modern-day software, which take the sound into the future… 

As a member of the Crew Love entourage, this former San Francisco club kid has flourished, taking full charge of his dynamic live show and presenting it to audiences all over the world, from Tokyo to Colombia, to London, San Francisco, Milan, Montreal, and everywhere in between. His touring has been extensive to say the least, and each experience has fed back into both his live set - which improves and evolves with every new performance - and his studio experimentations. Together with this, the visual aspect of his performances is also crucial to Navid’s output; exotic headdresses, flamboyant outfits, crowd interaction, rigorous dance moves, infectious energy and rousing vocals delivered in tandem with the dopest rhythms. 

Rolling as a DJ, singer, rapper, and producer of music that effortlessly weaves between influences, you’re never quite sure what to expect from Navid. Aside from collaborations with the likes of Psychemagik, Deniz Kurtel, Soul Clap and PillowTalk, Navid has also handled remix duties for artists like Miguel Migs, Midnight Magic, Pezzner, No Regular Play, Wolf + Lamb and more. Last year also saw the artist pick up the coveted Essential New Tune award on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show, when Heidi selected ‘Feelin' Purple (Soul Clap Remix)’ as her choice during a cover show. 

The future holds much more in store with more EPs lined up for the Crew Love family of labels (W+L, Soul Clap Records, W+L Black, and Double Standard) as well as a full-length album that will see the young Renaissance man stretching his musical legs far and wide. If you think you’ve heard it all, think again, Navid’s musical locker is brimming with influences and inspirations – from the psychedelic funk of the great George Clinton, through to rugged rap legends like Rakim.
