“As the son and nephew of pioneering UK nu roots dub duo Alpha & Omega — bassist Christine Woodbridge and keyboard player John Sprosen — Ben Alpha Steppa grew up surrounded by sound system and dubplate culture, starting in his mother's womb at Channel One and Jah Shaka shows. In his music the competing influences of nature and nurture cannot be separated. He has grown to become one of the most prolific and inventive dub producers around, absorbing worldwide inputs into his productions without dilution of their constituent parts, most notably with his recent Trigram series. On this set collaborating artists are from Russia, Senegal, Nigeria, Jamaica, Suriname and Brazil, but the true test of all reggae/ dub productions is when they stand alone in the mix, here with the horn driven march of "Concrete Meditation". Whenever we talk about Parisian techno, Antigone is definitely one of the first names that come to our mind. Young, talented and authentic Antigone belongs to this new, Parisian generation of DJs and producers at the vanguard of French techno. He always remains focused on the emotions and the atmosphere either he mixes or produces. His music has been released on great labels such as Token, Taapion, Soma Records, Indigo Aera and more. On this mix, he dives deeper into his record collection by bringing a dark ambience from the very beginning of his set, while ending up with some mind-bending textures.

Many of you will need no introduction to the music of Primal Code, the Italian duo who have conjured up a storm of stunning releases on labels such as Hypnus, The Gods Planet, and Konstrukt in relatively short order. We first connected over their gorgeous, then-unreleased track "Morgana," and since then it's been a pleasure watching them develop their natural and introspective sound, each release as polished and inspiring as the last. I'm so happy to welcome them to the podcast and what they've sent is pure delight, an emerald  evocation of sun-pierced woods and the clearing of the morning mist. Enjoy!

Art Bei Ton Podcast 032: Sabine Hoffmann

For the 32nd episode of our podcast series, we are very happy to great the Berlin-based DJ Sabine Hoffmann.

Playing last summer at our Ambient open air Art Bei Ton x Waxing Phases, she brings us, through her Ambient/Techno set, to meditate between some atmospheric and cosmic vibes.

Sabine was born and raised in Berlin. She grew up listening to a diverse array of hip hop, soul, funk and crossover beats. Sabine discovered her passion for spinning vinyl around the early 2000’s, when she was first exposed to electronic music. She plays a deep blend of techno, electro, Chicago & Detroit house with nuggets of acid, funk and breakbeats rolled in.

But regardless of the style, you will always find Sabine playing vinyl only sets as she prefers the warmth of analog sounds and the classic feel of turntables. She has played at almost all the leading clubs in Berlin such as About Blank, Salon zur wilden Renate, Berghain Kantine, Griessmühle, IPSE, Farbfernseher, Golden Gate, Arena Club and the list goes on. Her international profile has been steadily increasing, she already played in Tbilisi, Paris, Baku, Yerevan, Krakow and Thessaloniki to name a few.

Sabine is the founder of “Frauengedeck”. It´s an event series focusing on an all female line up. She wants to support and present female DJs. She has held many events at different clubs throughout Berlin like Wilde Renate, Griessmühle, Farbfernseher and Beate Uwe. The first international events outside of Germany, were held in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia other country's will soon follow.

Since 2016 Sabine works at the well known OYE record shop in Berlin. She is also hosting a monthly Frauengedeck livestream, which is streamed from the OYE record shop.

She finished her Audio Engineering studies at SAE. Inspired by her gained knowledge, she started putting her focus on music production. The first result, a collaboration with No Mad Ronin is available on the label Zaijenroots.

I recorded this mixtape about a year ago when Spring slowly started to wake from its slumber, when the moving birds just started to get back, and the birds sang with more force and beauty in the forest nearby the house. I was filled with anticipation and hope, not yet aware how a tiny virus would turn my life and the world upside-down. Well, I´m still here and alive, and this to shall pass. This mix contains music I love and still loves, and I´m humble and thankful for all the musicians that contributed to make this musical journey possible. Never stop making music. I hope all the pieces woven together creates a larger whole, for you to enjoy.
