In this episode of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Sean Reardon begins with a recap of last weekend’s Chamber events. Witches Night Out and Octoberfest were both wildly successful. There’s a huge match-up in high school football on Friday night when The Newburyport Clippers meet the North Reading Hornets. Mayor Reardon, along with Drew Moholland, will be the commentators on Joppa Radio WJOP 96.3.  The kick-off is at 6:30 p.m. at James T. Stehlin Field. Recycling and Energy Director, Molly Ettenborough, hosted National Grid at the Newburyport Senior Community Center yesterday, regarding the November 1st electricity increase. Tonight, a new School Committee member will be chosen during a special joint meeting between the School Committee and the City Council. The meeting will take place in the City Hall Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. The Plum Island dredging project is well underway. The Mayor’s Office receives daily updates from the Army Corps of Engineers. There will be a statewide mattress and textile ban effective on November 1st. Mayor's Corner 2022-10-20

On this week's episode, Mary Jacobsen talks with James Kimmel, Jr. about the psychology of grievance and revenge. Kimmel is lecturer in psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and co-director of the Yale Collaborative for Motive Control Studies.
Kimmel talks about the role of grievances and retaliation in violent crime, including studies that reveal that “your brain on grievance looks a lot like your brain on drugs.” Harboring a grievance – a perceived wrong or injustice, either real or imagined, says Kimmel – “activates the same neural reward circuitry as narcotics.”
Just as people become addicted to drugs or gambling, people may become addicted to seeking retribution on perceived enemies, or as Kimmel calls it, “revenge addiction.” Kimmel also talks about how cultivation of grievances has become a contagious and dangerous political tool, notably in the wake of the Big Lie and the Jan. 6th insurrection.
“Revenge-seeking” also contributes to domestic violence, youth violence and bullying, police brutality, and terrorism.
According to Kimmel, it’s critical to “increase public education, from school age through adulthood, about healthy ways to process feelings of hurt and humiliation.”
Kimmel will explain “motive control” treatment strategies being piloted successfully at the Yale Collaborative as a means of disrupting grievance addiction and disarming the craving for retaliation.

Morning Show with Mary Jacobsen 2023-03-23 The Psychology Of Grievance & Revenge Addiction

In this episode of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Reardon begins by thanking everyone involved in the Earth Day celebrations! Spring is alive and parklets are starting to be set up on Pleasant Street and then on State Street. We are in the midst of the budget season.  The Schools budget was approved by the School Committee on Tuesday night and they will hold a follow-up discussion on changes to the budget at a special School Committee Business Meeting at the Senior/Community Center tonight. The full budget will be submitted to the City Council on May 8th. There was a site visit to Plum Island on Monday afternoon.  They met as a follow-up to the dredging project to review plans/coordination for new sand fencing, mobi mats, dune grass planting, and signage in this area. The Fire Chief search continues today with an assessment center, a series of exercises, and interviews that all candidates have to complete. Mayor Reardon hopes that final interviews will take place next week. The City of Newburyport and Newburyport Pride is pleased to announce the inaugural City of Newburyport Pride Celebration Weekend starting on Friday, June 2nd with a Ceremonial Proclamation and Flag Raising followed on Saturday with the Pride Parade. On Thursday, May 4, 2023, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Auditorium, the City of Newburyport will hold its First Annual Boards, Commissions & Volunteer Fair. Attendees will be able to “shop” the City’s all-volunteer Boards and Commissions and look for opportunities to volunteer. The Newburyport Literary Festival takes place this weekend and opens at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, hosting authors Peter Orner in conversation with Andre Dubus. Join us later that evening for a cocktail party at The Grog. The lineup continues Saturday, April 29 at the City Hall auditorium, with an exciting day of in-person talks and readings and on Sunday, April 30, a virtual experience, featuring authors from a distance! You can purchase raffle tickets at City Hall in the Mayor’s Office.  They are for one of seven baskets – each with an original painting and gift cards. The drawing will take place at Spring Fest on the Newburyport Waterfront on June 4th @ 4 p.m. Mayor Reardon will have open office hours at City Hall tonight (Thursday) from 5-6 p.m. and tomorrow (Friday) from 8-10 a.m. Please stop by to discuss any issues with the Mayor!
