Thando Tido10Shots Damane, A Dream Deferred 

I am a contemporary hip hop artist and poet based in Pretoria Gauteng. I have strong cultural connections to the Eastern Cape, where I was born and where  to this day I proudly trace my ancestory. I have fond memories of rolling green hills  dotted  mud huts, clear skies, hot summer days and cool evenings evenings.


I began writing at about 10 years old but not in any specific format, style or structure, I began experimenting with hiphop music, in my early days of high school but never identified myself as a Rapper till after high school. Before that I sang in a four part harmony group in church.

As a teenager I made a number of bad decisions that drastically changed the direction of my life, the next decade after high school were a series of failed attempts in climbing the corporate ladder, deep feelings of failure,  broken family relationship that lead to addiction, imprisonment(no criminal record) , near death and violent experiences .

Ironically it was during this  dark period in my life that i  began to right honestly about my life... 

I was depressed and I knew exactly what the problem was and I knew that I needed help,  I could not do it anymore, the feeling of failure was driving me to suicide, I was 25, I had gave up on life. With support from family I admitted myself by a recovery center on a farm outside East London, Nahoon Nature Reserve. I found God and by his grace my family relationships were restored. For the first time in my adult life I felt like I was not guilty, forgiven. I prayed to God everyday for a music career.

June 2022 less than 2 months ago I began to record again  and since then I have recorded over 30 songs,shot 9 videos, wrote 9 poems and had the opportunity to be on radio. My  music and poetry reflects all these complexities, not only in my life but in the world we live in.
 Hiphop/rap and poetry  is a safe platform to be everything I am, a rebellious youth, moral leader, patriot, africanist, global citizen, gangster and  role model. My unique perspective on urban youth culture and the desire to "write what I like" represents a generation of youth whose rights to freedom were  guaranteed from birtth and equipped with the necessary lifetools to effectively communicate their own thoughts, and to change their own lives
