The highest grossing films at the Chinese box office are war movies. Wolf Warrior 1 and 2, and The Battle at Lake Changjin, portray heroic Chinese soldiers battling against foreign enemies, including the Americans. These big budget productions are overseen by an arm of the state known as the China Film Administration. Are they therefore a form or propaganda, or can they be defined as art? Dr Xiaoning Lu, a lecturer in Chinese culture and cinema at SOAS, shares her views on the political messages of the films, in conversation with Duncan Bartlett, Editor of Asian Affairs magazine.

Ep43: All guns blazing: the political messages of Chinese war films

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of China-Peru diplomatic ties. The year is also the 200th anniversary of the independence of Peru, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party. In this episode, Marco Carrasco-Villanueva, Specialist in Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations of Peru, Research Associate at Seeds of Change Consulting and NASA Space Apps Local Lead for Lima, joins us in a talk on the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Marco has been a friend of TI for a long time. He has been an editorial committee member of the TI Observer (TIO) publication since November 2019. In this 30-minute discussion, Marco talks about the history of China-Peru ties, the significance of engagement between the two countries, and the importance of developing people-to-people ties.

We are seeing the peak and decline of this global hi-tech complex economy. He believes the elite are powerless to stop the falling Energy Return On Investment (EROI) and that a lot of their wealth is going to be wiped out, just as in past history (e.g. late Bronze Age). He sees us hitting the energy peak at 2025 and the likelihood of military conflicts as a consequence. Russia is looking to the Arctic and China is in serious trouble. We don't have enough energy to make the transition to the Green Economy and therefore things like the metaverse, cryptocurrencies, and EVs won't be possible at scale due to the lack of energy and an electric grid already at capacity. This would make maintaining a global digital technocracy difficult.

A new Brookings Institution report argues that the era of deepening ties between the United States and China ushered in by the 1972 Nixon visit to China is over, and suggests that frictions may be mitigated by a bipartisan approach to China that appeals to allies in Europe and Asia and tempers the reality of competition with cooperation on global public goods.
