MASS Sessions #167 | Deranged

Deranged is a new and upcoming Lithuanian artist in the London scene. Over the past few years, he has been carefully studying his influences and crafting his style. Rolling and groovy basslines, sinister and hypnotic rhythms, minimalistic yet powerful percussions are the distinctive details in his sound. Effectively blending both old school and new, the aim is to keep the listener locked in the groove the whole time.
Frustrated with the lack of hypnotic and groovy music in London, he decided to launch his project @insignia.london. It is a new collective and event series, showcasing the best local talent in this specific genre of techno. Few first outdoor events have already seen massive success. You will see more of Deranged, as well as his event very soon.

Now based in Lyon, Florian Grangier is an artist of the French techno scene since 2009. It was under the name of Don Serata that he started to play before creating his  tracks. From 2011, he took part in an EP with the label French Frequency, the several tracks and EPs in Europe and the USA (Coco Machete, Macro Records,Deal With It). Wishing to be more autonomous and curious to discover new talents, he created in 2014 his own label Unusual Records to broadcast his music and support other artists, while performing in local clubs (DV1, Life City, 101, Ninkasi, Maison Mère, Terminal, ...). Full of resources andsurprises, this versatile and passionate artist will catch the attention, as was the case in 2018 with Nina Kraviz who caught up his track London in her own DJ sets. In 2019, after 10 years of mix and production, he takes a new identity and becomes Amour Noir, a confirmation of a style and a state of mind, committed to asserting a techno music that is both powerful and attractive. Observant is ecstatic to announce that our tenth release will be done by someone who is only a few years older than this catalogue number by age, the incredibly young and talented Dallas-based Cratan, whose work has piqued the interest of some of the industry's biggest names.

"Advanced," the EP’s first offering is a propulsive track with a deft synth stab. During the breakdown, a barrage of slick percussive patterns emerge, surrounded by overdriven rides that insist on being played in a warehouse from the 1990s. With his slinky house-injected flavour, it's a formidable balance of tension and appropriation with "Call," which features a persuasive lead that periodically catches the light over a groovy bass. You'll be transported back to the days of good barebones techno with the title track "Crestfall," which features a panic stricken 16th note cascading percussion. Until you notice the overdriven elements tumbling their way with claps that slap a true classic feel.

The first remix comes from the Italian "Wrong Assessment," who opts for a slightly slower pace for "Advanced" while enveloping it in an eerie soundscape of FM textures and an irresistibly wormy low end groove. It's gleaming and shiny, with almost martial percussion sequences that replace the synth sounds from the original. Finishing off in  Sweden with Franz Jäger's spell on "Crestfall," you'll want to hold your breath for what's to come in the form of a vocal-esque pad subdued over an elevated rhythm that just erupts into many sonic dimensions, showcasing his gift for pacing and sound staging while using only the original claps to support his rendition.​
