Good morning. I hope that you are well. Today I have another beautiful track to share with you via this exclusive premiere. Or maybe it's a video premiere. I actually couldn't decide, so I've asked Cedric Vermue if I can publish both. I think it was a good decision and I hope you will agree. I first got introduced to this Dutch pianist, composer and producer of fragile, nostalgic, and serene neoclassical-meets-ambient music [the cross-over genre] when I premiered a piece titled "We Came and Left" from his Left Upon Us album on Piano and Coffee back in 2019.  Besides playing the piano, Vermue also plays the church organ as well as analogue synths which he incorporates with Rhodes during his live performances. He returns early in March, this time on a fairly new to the scene, Utrecht (The Netherlands) based independent imprint, mylja. I have previously introduced this boutique record label started by Yaron Cohen and Daniël Leseman in 2020 with this writeup of Alchi's Full Of It. I am happy to see that the label continues to persevere in its output of absolutely gorgeous music [this crazy world demands more beauty!]. And Vermue's upcoming album is a perfect addition to the catalogue! "Perpetua is the Latin word for infinity, referring to the Christian tradition that played an important part in the inspiration for this album, taking inspiration from Gregorian melodies and old organ music." The piece I'm featuring today is a recomposed Gregorian Sanctus melody (Sanctus XI) played on a piano and clarinet. The captivating video, directed by Victoria Ushkanova, and "shot on a cold wintery day in a forest near Almere", features Nicolo Zanotti, interpreting cascading arpeggios complemented by Lex Houtermans (clarinet and contra-clarinet) and Rudi van Hest (clarinet). There is a lot more I can say about the production, credits and approach, but instead of lifting the veil of mystery, I'd rather let the music do the talking... and let emotion sweep away...

Hello friends!
I wrote this song in 2014, a few days after my second son, Lino, was born, and it is dedicated to him.

I think there are few things more beautiful in the world and that give you more peace of mind than seeing your little children sleeping and feeling protected. (Unfortunately, there are many places in the world where this is not possible).
Returning to Lino, what my wife and I didn't know was that he was going to give us two years of sleepless nights!! LOL.
In the cover image I have used two photos of each of my children (Lino and Daniel). I say this so that you don't think that I have 4 children (that would have added many more sleepless nights!!!).

This Dutch pianist first appeared on HC when the Piano and Coffee imprint released his "Left Upon Us" debut in November 2019. I premiered his video for "We Came and Left", praising the "elegant, atmospheric textures, acoustic treatments, and electronic manipulations that carry the melodies deep into the night." In 2023, Cedric moved over to the mylja imprint for an album titled "perpetua". Once again, I featured this beautiful video for "Aether" of fragile, nostalgic, and serene music, which I subsequently selected as one of the Best of 2023 albums in my Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight list. So yes, you can say that I'm a fan!

A week ago, Cedric reached out to tell me about his upcoming EP, collecting pieces written before his debut that are, of course, still timeless! I told Cedric about this new community I'm trying to get going and invited him to join and share the music before its official release date. Iconic, innovative and internationally renowned force in avant-garde music The Art Ensemble of Chicago released their 50th anniversary celebratory album We Are On The Edge in April, and Erased Tapes is honoured to produce the vinyl edition of this exceptional body of work. Led by surviving founding members Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, these brand new recordings involve a staggering array of contemporary artists ranging from across the jazz, experimental and improvised music spheres; from the visionary poet and musician Moor Mother, trumpeters Fred Berry and Hugh Ragin, who have performed with Mitchell for over five and four decades, to bassist Jaribu Shahid, supreme cellist Tomeka Reid, celebrated flute virtuoso Nicole Mitchell and the extraordinary voice of Rodolfo Cordova-Lebron.

The vinyl edition, due for release on July 26, will be available as a double album featuring a meticulous studio session of the newly assembled group of musicians, combining re-recordings of works spanning the last 50 years, some never before recorded, as well as new compositions. The 4-LP special edition also includes their live set recorded at Edgefest, the annual experimental jazz and creative new music festival in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Having witnessed this exciting new formation around Roscoe and Don live at Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Robert Raths was compelled to start a conversation with their US label Pi Recordings, based out of New York, and support this project in any way possible.

Stephen Lord, Artistic Advisor of NEC's opera studies program, conducts Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice in Jordan Hall. Based on the myth of Orpheus, set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi this production features the NEC Philharmonia and a student cast led by singers in the Artist Diploma program, stage directed by Opera Studies Chair Joshua Major.
