Sonatine is a piano work written by Maurice Ravel. Although Ravel wrote in his autobiography that he wrote the Sonatine after his piano suite Miroirs, it seems to have been written between 1903 and 1905. He most likely referred to the dates he finished both of the works.

Only very few piano works have become as popular as this theme with twelve variations. It already caught on soon after Mozart’s death, as witnessed by the numerous handwritten copies and prints. Although nothing is known with any certainty regarding its genesis, we can now conclusively date “Ah, vous dirai-je Maman” to 1781. At that time Mozart wanted to make his way as a prominent piano teacher in Vienna. His variations still prove to be excellent teaching material.

"Le Roman d'Elvire" (The Tale of Elvira), an opéra-comique in three acts with music by Ambroise Thomas (1811–1896), premiered in Paris on 4 February 1860. Set to an original libretto by Alexandre Dumas (père), the work was met with anticipation but failed to captivate Parisian audiences. Indeed, the failure inspired Thomas to reassess his compositional style, and his biggest successes - "Mignon" and "Hamlet" - followed some years later. For Dumas's part, he never wrote a libretto for the stage again. Nevertheless, this overture is another unknown masterpiece by a known master; written entirely in 6/8 (though in different tempi), the interconnected themes are distinctly and colorfully set apart, while sonata form is eschewed almost entirely.

Ambroise Thomas: Le Roman d'Elvire (1860) - Ouverture

Opposite to the Revolutionary etude in the previous track, this etude features the fast running passages in the right hand, and powerful chords in the left hand. The motion of the running passages is constantly changing from upwards to downwards, creating a wind whirling effect. This etude is popularly known as the Winter Wind etude, and it uses a big range, spanning the entire keyboard. It is considered one of Chopin's most challenging etudes. By the way, don't be fooled by the beginning, as a few "pianissimo" chords represent the quiet before the storm.
