النص هو قصة قصيرة بعنوان "المعجم" من كتاب "العالق في يوم أحد" لعبد الله ناصر:

"لم يكن يعرف غير بضع كلمات، سبع أو ثمان، يؤويها في فمه مثل دار للأيتام. يرعاها طوال اليوم، يعتني بلباسها وطعامها، ويحتمل شجارها اليومي حين تتسابق إلى الطعام أو إلى النوم في الأسرة العلوية.

كبر قليلًا فاكتظَّ فمه بعشرات الكلمات، ثم بالمئات ثم بالآلاف حتى بات يشبه مخيمات اللاجئين.

كلمات كبيرة فوق اللسان وتحته، وكلمات صغيرة تلتصق بالأسنان كما يلتصق الصغار بنوافذ السيارات، وكلمات ندم عالقة في سقف الحلق كالبالونات، وكلمات فقد سيغصّ بها يومًا ويختنق ما لم يسعفه أحدهم بضربة في الظهر.

كان مثل المعجم أبًا حنونًا لكل الكلمات، لا يفرق بينها أبدًا، كبيرة أو صغيرة، جميلة أو دميمة، بيضاء أو سوداء، ولكنّه مثل كل الآباء لا يمكن أن يكون عادلًا. يفضّل في سريرته كلمات بعينها، وإن لم تكن الأجمل. يميل، وإن لم يعلنها أبدًا، إلى الكلمات القصيرة، ثلاثية الحروف، ويطربه أن يتكرر الحرف أكثر من مرة فإذا صادف إحدى حروف العلة في المنتصف كانت تلك الكلمة لازمته الدائمة.

يتركُ باب فمه مفتوحًا طوال الوقت، تدخل الكلمات ولا تخرج أبدًا، حتى عندما يضطر إلى الكلام كان يستعين بيديه فقط."
