A defining member of the hardcore techno scene in the early nineties and stretching his influence across a range of sub genres, from jungle to house music, there’s not one section of the cultural shifts since then which Nookie hasn’t seeped his influence into. Whether it’s been pivotal moments on imprints such as Labello Blanco, Reinforced, Moving Shadow or Good Looking, he’s proven the span of his creativity with every track he’s released across a plethora of labels. This continues with a brand-new single on Metalheadz, extending across an array of styles and a natural progression from his acclaimed remix of Goldie’s ‘Inner City Life’.

Following up from his widely acclaimed debut solo album on Hospital Records, that marked his tenth year as a solo artist, Voltage returns to the south London drum & bass label with a four-track EP of fresh remixes and VIPs of some of the finest cuts from ‘Balance Over Symmetry’. Originally released in September of 2020, the legacy of the album transcends into 2021 with a dose of extra sonic input from Serum, Waeys and Harriet Jaxxon.

Souped Up label owner and fellow member of the powerhouse supergroup Kings Of The Rollers, Serum steps up to offer his tantalising remix of ‘Natty Love’ featuring the groove inducing vocals of sound system legend Sweetie Irie. Hypnotising steel drums, a pounding bassline and rolling drumwork amalgamate into a straight drum & bass heater.

Dutch native and bubbling talent Waeys is up next as he injects his signature deep and dark sound into Voltage’s ‘Life Of A DJ’ featuring reggae and dancehall superstar Demolition Man known for his skill as a vocalist, producer, MC and sound engineer. With a healthy selection of releases under his belt on scene staple imprints including Critical, Shogun Audio, Blackout Music, Skankandbass and Overview, expect clinical precision and a serious amount of groove.

Quickly rising to the top of the drum & bass ranks, Harriet Jaxxon’s remix of ‘Save Me From Myself’, originally featured on Hospital Records’ 25th anniversary compilation ‘H25PITAL’, includes tearout amens and a vibe-packed wobbling bassline as she continues to make her mark as a top-tier producer and DJ.

Last not but least, Voltage is on VIP duties for the EP’s fourth and final track. Revisiting the sombre album original ‘Endless Dreaming’ featuring the stunning vocals of the Bulgarian Goddess. Voltage demonstrates just one of the many talents he is loved for - being able to inject a fresh lease of life into an already amazing drum & bass anthem. Eerie synth hiss, an 808 distorted to perfection and drums which seamlessly cut through the mix, Voltage pulls it out the bag once again.

With releases on foundational imprints such as Metalheadz, 31 Recordings, RAM, Souped Up and Spearhead to name a few, Voltage’s discography speaks for itself in laying down his decade worth of experience within drum & bass. Support for his productions comes flooding in from a range of influential selectors including Andy C, Hype, Friction, Goldie, Bailey, Hazard and Bryan Gee, it’s safe to say that 10 years of Voltage has been a remarkable decade, and As the UK looks to reopening later this year, expect to find Voltage at a multitude of shows and festivals including hosting his Royal Rumble stage at Hospitality Weekend In The Woods as part of Kings Of The Rollers, as well as their sell-out show at Printworks in November, Parklife, Detonate Festival and more.

Big, bashy and bold, Elephants launches itself out of the blocks, with brash basslines, as all the while the beats stomp their way through the undergrowth. A truly epic way to start the collection, this onell get you going and no mistake. Dilemn turns up to Knock It Down next, alongside The Clamps. Together, they create one of the biggest tunes on the EP, all pulsating beats and flashing electronics. Capturing the spirit of the neurofunk sound is not easy, yet Dilmemn and The Clamps have done it on Knock It Down. Get ready for this. Yanntek says Ah-Woo, and who are we to argue, as the track gets seriously animalistic straight from the off. Switching speeds and twisting through the turns, this is one seriously different piece of music. Whether its the crunching bass, or the simmering low end, theres just something about this one whichll catch you off guard, and will stick in your head for days to come. Fades Epizode is a bit more relaxed in its introduction, before dropping down into some hardcore, techy business which blends a range of different sounds, before Bl4ck Owlz come with the insane Firebowl. This one has to be heard to be believed, and once you hear it, youll never forget. Fitting in perfectly with the other tracks, this ones a highlight. Contributions from Fatloaf (the hip hop-inspired Elbows Up) and Velos (the dreamy, nightmarish The Navigator) follow, before Intrakspekts For The Flesh finishes things off. Building slowly, this one soon jumps up with bouncing beats, rugged bass pressure and a trailer load of attitude. Neuroporn will fulfil your every musical fantasy. Grab it now.

You know we had to do it… 

Probably one of the most important, if not THE most important release our label has ever done, The Australian Connection set a mission and set the scene for us moving forward. We got abroad, got a bunch of sick producers and a bunch of sweet tunes, played out, made some mates, and realised that it was pretty cool to use our label to shine a light on national scenes worldwide. 

Following this series was The Belgian Connection, another wicked outing for us and another set of nutty tunes, and we’ve got some cool shit in the pipeline for next year too, that should see us racking up the air miles and in-flight pints, and make us some more mates around the globe too. 

But enough of that, back to the present, and we’re bringing it home, completing the Australian leg of our endless mission to mine the scene for the best new producers, by getting the tunes from our Ozzy mates, and giving them to our UK mates to have a pop at. 

The results, unsurprisingly, speak for themselves; what was already one of our favourite releases gets a makeover, and comes out looking even better than before. Just cop the tracklist and you know it’s gunna be a big one; Klax puts the twist on Lockjaw’s ‘Cells’, Terrence & Phillip get the deep tech treatment at the hands of Objectiv & Klinical, Data 3 mangle Gran Calavera’s neuro-banger ‘Panorama’, and that’s just the start of it. The whole release positively oozes style and stamina, and it’s been great to hear how each producer stamped their unique sound on some already fantastic tracks, this was a super-fun release to oversee, and the finished product will be on rotation for years to come, definitely not one to miss!
