Where Do We Begin

Our sixth VA compilation continues in the collective spirit at the heart of Pressure Dome; here taking its fullest form. The first of its kind in the label catalogue, ‘Two [Is Greater Than] One’ sees a selection of PD regulars and friends of the label put their heads together across eight atmospheric tracks, equally as suited to the club as to solo listening. 

Those who have followed the label for a while will be no stranger to the comp’s first collaborator. Human Resources teams up with London dub techno specialist, Keplrr, on ‘Spring’: a mood-led composition where the impact is contained in atmosphere. Fragmented drum breaks are engulfed by airy synth pads and punctuated by a dancehall-indebted rhythm that marches at 90BPM. ‘Yuppel’ welcomes Noods Radio mainstay Sid Quirk aka Keppel into the mix. He is joined by label boss, Yushh, on a ruminative percussive tool, guided by cavernous drums that fabricate a vivid, immersive environment. With the guidance of Brighton’s Caldera, the journey continues with Süss Choc. The reverb-laden synth plucks on ‘evoke water droplets, and hallucinatory details echo around them to create the illusion of being in a mountainous cove.

Delay Grounds – an audiophile in the truest sense of the word – is next to take the baton. Together, he and Yushh take it up a notch on ‘Telomere’ – a full-bodied club-ready track packed with glitchy chords and giddy drums. A gnarly, Pariah-esque breakdown segues into the track’s second wind where pitched-up vocal chops accelerate it to the compilation’s energetic climax. With the help of London drum specialist, Syz, ‘Fuzbidun’ keeps our feet firmly on the dancefloor. Breakbeats are chopped and rearranged, flitting between double and half time whilst a distorted mid-bass roughens things round the edges, prepping the ground for the compilation’s move to a more inorganic feel.

Bristol don, Forever, joins Yushh next on ‘Passing Notes’ – a groove-driven club track where skittish percussion ricochets from side to side, so palpable it tempts the touch. ‘Crash Bash Party At BUFOs’ is no different. The link-up between Delay Grounds and dance music’s stalwart of musique concrète, Wordcolour, is completely idiosyncratic to both artists: the perfect combination of found-sound percussion and skillfully rehashed vocal samples. It’s up to two PD mainstays – Roy Mills and Human Resources – to close proceedings. A chugging rhythm bubbles under the surface of ‘Sycophantasy’, sending us on a dubbed-out trip before picking the pace back up again.

I turned the page and will never forget what I then saw.

The fountain pen scratched against the paper, whistling like fur on an abandoned tire in the middle of the night at the centre of the universe in the core of whatever it is I’m trying to believe. I am a patient human and I live and breathe. I know this for sure.

I read about a whispering stillness of the Stadsnacht as my blood levels gradually even out again. Beneath the ink, the words take shape. This is a secret correspondence with the Book of Change – a dialogue not meant for eyes or ears, but for the soul. Are you still with me?

The Snake/rope tightens, its Coils Dive into the deep well of patience, where waiting is an art, a dance with the unseen. The Scientists Say we should measure, predict, contain—but here, in the shadow of the deepest of nights, the only truth is the Celebration of Ignorance. Love is the force that binds as it untangles the invisible thread that refuses to sever. The next page quotes the mystical figure Daim: "Never Dissever Us."

There, in the dawning light, the Dageraad reveals the Icequeen in her frigid throne, the Topiary Man standing guard in his sculpted silence. In this quiet landscape, I wait. I continue to wait, for I have good fortune on my very hands.


If You Won’t, I Will.


Can we exhibit the power to possess conformity? Can we redeem the benefits of crossing the water? Yes. The choice, the act of breaking through the barrier of convenience, is both a burden and a liberation.The words swirl, abstract and concrete, like action and inaction. The Book of Change is a paradox to puzzle over.

The evening cool rests its shoulders on my fluffy neck. I inhale as my pen lifts itself from the paper once more, shedding ink as though it were tears of joy. I know that I have touched the edge of something vast, something that moves beyond the grasp of reason into the heart of the I Ching, the ever-turning wheel of change. This is the correct orientation. This is the vivid imagery of clouds falling from the heavens and into our laps. This was never meant for your ears. This was meant for you to feast on as the seasons bestow upon us.

Dub Sound Archives is a show centered around various UK rave styles that brings to the audience a variety of sounds, always beyond the 4/4 pattern.

La Laguna Boreal del Jardín Botánico Atlántico se volvió el hogar de Sophia Loizou durante el L.E.V. Festival 2024, donde presentó Vesta,  una obra sonora inmersiva sobre las dimensiones ocultas del sonido. A partir de grabaciones de archivo y de campo de frecuencias sumergidas, sísmicas y electromagnéticas, Loizou pone en primer plano las huellas sónicas y las sombras espectrales que habitan en los límites de la percepción. La pieza se presentó en formato binaural, creando una experiencia sonora envolvente que nos anima a ampliar nuestras prácticas auditivas más allá de los límites humanos.

Sophia Loizou es una productora musical, autora y artista audiovisual británica que trabaja en la intersección de la música contemporánea, la ficción especulativa y la ecología.

The Boreal Lagoon of the Atlantic Botanical Garden became home to Sophia Loizou during the L.E.V. Festival 2024, where she presented Vesta, an immersive sound work about the hidden dimensions of sound. Using archival and field recordings of submerged, seismic and electromagnetic frequencies, Loizou foregrounds the sonic traces and spectral shadows that inhabit the edges of perception. The piece was presented in binaural format, creating an immersive sound experience that encourages us to extend our listening practices beyond human boundaries.

Sophia Loizou is a British music producer, author and audiovisual artist working at the intersection of contemporary music, speculative fiction and ecology.
