Fat Habit – The Band

Fat Habit is made up of producer/keyboards Marky ‘LV' Child, drummer and all-round ‘Energiser Bunny’ Steve Burkwood, and rapper/vocalist & wordsmith Tosin ‘T-man’ Olomowewe.

The Fat Habit Story

Fat Habit formed out of necessity.

It was early 2005, drum 'n' bass lacked live acts, pop sensibility and catchy melodies; all things that were present in early nineties music. Marky wanted to re-live the music of his youth – stomping basslines with an electro edge and addictive hooks – music you could rave to.

He locked himself away to get the creative juices flowing. Six months, and a six-inch beard later, the first single ‘Boogieman’, inspired by the patriarch of a famous yellow family, was born. 

Working initially with guest vocalist Natalie Long, Marky built on Boogieman’s success by recording Fat Habit's debut album, Ridge Sessions. The hard work paid off; gigs and recognition followed, and a whole new generation discovered the sound of the Habit.

In 2007, Marky took stock in a hotel room in New Zealand and developed a new, fresher, harder sound; utilising Fat Habit's unique melodic 'signature'. On his return, the search began…the search for the illusive drummer. Luckily for Marky, Steve appeared. Out of a lamp.

They began recording, and had their inaugural gig. But even though the tunes were rockin' the crowd to the core, something was missing. Just when they seemed like a juggernaut two-piece missing a wheel, fate took a stand and destined them to be a mighty trio….

Lady Luck had waved her wand on the way to the gig; the Energiser Bunny's Nissan now lay in pieces by the roadside. He begged a bed for the night. The next morning, while travelling on the capital's finest transport system – that's the tube to you and me – he heard an angel singing. Light emanated from the other side of the carriage. He saw a vision known as Tosin. Maybe it was luck. Maybe it was fate. Tosin just thanked his lucky stars.

One telephone audition later, the line-up became complete. Now writing and recording their new album, the Fat Habit story continues apace…

Mi pasión por la música comenzó en una época en la que rebobinábamos las cintas de casete con un boli. Aquellos días estaban llenos de descubrimientos sonoros, de grabaciones caseras, de canciones que se escuchaban una y otra vez hasta desgastar la cinta. Fue ahí, entre ruidos de estática y carátulas escritas a mano, donde empezó a gestarse mi vínculo profundo con la música.

Cuando tenía 15 años apareció una guitarra española por casa —gracias a mi padre— y desde entonces no he parado. Empecé a tocar por curiosidad, sin clases ni manuales, solo con ganas y oído. Aquella guitarra, más que un instrumento, fue una puerta abierta a un universo sonoro que decidí explorar por mi cuenta. Sin maestros ni academias, solo con pasión, intuición y constancia.

Durante los años siguientes, mi camino se fue moldeando entre locales de ensayo. Pasé por varios grupos malagueños, donde tuve la suerte de compartir música con personas increíbles y absorber una amplia variedad de estilos: desde el pop más melódico hasta el rock más crudo, pasando por la riqueza armónica del jazz fusión. Cada proyecto fue una escuela viva, donde aprendí a escuchar, a adaptarme y a entender que la música es un lenguaje que se transforma según con quién lo hablas.

Aquella etapa me enseñó el valor del trabajo colectivo, la importancia de la improvisación y la magia que ocurre cuando varias energías se alinean en una misma dirección. Aprendí a componer, a tocar para el grupo, a dejar espacio y también a ocuparlo cuando la música lo pedía.

Ya con 30 me picó el gusanillo de las teclas y me lancé al mundo del piano y los sintetizadores. También por mi cuenta, como siempre: ensayo, error y muchas horas de exploración. El teclado se convirtió en una nueva forma de complementar lo que la guitarra ya no podía expresar por sí sola. Descubrí nuevas texturas, nuevas formas de construir atmósferas, y empecé a componer desde otra perspectiva, más profunda, más amplia.

La llegada de los sintetizadores abrió un nuevo capítulo: el de la producción musical. Me interesé por la grabación, la mezcla, el diseño sonoro. Empecé a experimentar con capas, con efectos, con ritmos programados y armonías flotantes. La tecnología se convirtió en aliada, pero siempre al servicio de la emoción.

Soy compositor autodidacta, y mi música es justo eso: una mezcla de intuición, pasión y aprendizaje a mi ritmo. No sigo reglas, sigo el sonido. Cada acorde, cada progresión, cada melodía ha nacido del deseo profundo de crear. Mi música es el reflejo de esa evolución: sincera, libre y en constante búsqueda.

Hoy sigo explorando, combinando lo orgánico con lo digital, lo clásico con lo experimental. Me interesa tanto la emoción como la estructura, tanto el ritmo como el silencio. Compongo para contar historias, para provocar sensaciones, para conectar. Y aunque el camino ha sido solitario en muchos momentos, también ha sido profundamente revelador.

Mi objetivo no es encajar en un estilo, sino construir uno propio. Uno que hable de mí, de mis influencias, de mis vivencias. Uno que respire Málaga, que suene a calle, a mar, a noche, a introspección. Uno que invite a cerrar los ojos y dejarse llevar.

My passion for music started at a time when we used to rewind cassette tapes with a pen. Those days were full of sound discoveries, home recordings, songs heard over and over again until the tape was worn out. It was there, between static noises and handwritten covers, that my deep connection with music began to develop.

When I was 15 years old he appeared a spanish guitar in the house -thanks to my father- and since then I have not stopped. I started playing out of curiosity, without lessons or manuals, just with heart and ear. That guitar, more than an instrument, was an open door to a sound universe that I decided to explore on my own. Without teachers or academies, only with passion, intuition and constancy.

During the following years, my path was shaped between rehearsal rooms. I went through several groups in Malaga, where I was lucky enough to share music with amazing people and absorb a wide variety of styles: from the most melodic pop to the most raw rock, passing by the harmonic richness of jazz fusion. Each project was a living school, where I learned to listen, adapt and understand that music is a language that changes depending on who you talk to.

That stage taught me the value of collective work, the importance of improvisation and the magic that occurs when several energies align in the same direction. I learned to compose, to play for the group, to leave space and also to occupy it when the music asked.

Already at 30 I was itching for the keys and I launched into the world of piano and synthesizers. Also on my own, as always: trial and error and many hours of exploration. The keyboard became a new way to complement what the guitar could no longer express on its own. I discovered new textures, new ways of building atmospheres, and started composing from another perspective, deeper, broader.

The arrival of synthesizers opened a new chapter: music production. I became interested in recording, mixing, sound design. I started experimenting with layers, effects, programmed rhythms and floating harmonies. Technology became an ally, but always at the service of emotion.

I’m a self-taught composer, and my music is just that: a mix of intuition, passion and learning at my own pace. I don’t follow rules, I follow sound. Every chord, every progression, every melody has been born from the deep desire to create. My music is the reflection of that evolution: sincere, free and in constant search.

Today I continue to explore, combining the organic with the digital, the classic with the experimental. I am interested in both emotion and structure, rhythm and silence. I compose to tell stories, to provoke sensations, to connect. And although the path has been lonely at many times, it has also been deeply revealing.

My goal is not to fit into a style, but to build one of my own. One that speaks about me, my influences, my experiences. One that breathes Malaga, that sounds like street, sea, night, introspection. One that invites you to close your eyes and let yourself go.
