Be For:

There are two definitions to this EP, the first being literally being “for our time”. In the current era of musicians, like myself from London, people tend crave and look to the states for answers and are quick to criticise the music from our own home. Some may disagree – but I speak from experience. This EP is the project that demonstrates there is hope where we’re from and where I’ve come from and we should unite in that. We all have a story to tell. This project is about Truth, Love and Passion.

Before:

The second meaning of this project is its nostalgic presence. This being a story telling project, it is filled with reflecting on situations and life experiences. The whole theme sonically is driven by reminiscence; I wanted to bring the same feeling or something close to the feeling, you felt when Hip Hop was at its peak of greatness and what is said actually meant something. I was born in 1993, and with this project I wanted to give people that same feeling of when music and Hip Hop was appreciated and respected by the masses in the 90's, and bring that feeling back to my home city and the world.

A remix pack is nothing more than the universe experiencing its own dance music subjectively. With this in mind, we took Ecuadorian sound-seer Nicola Cruz’s latest audiovisions and refracted them through the minds of some of the world’s hottest young cultural interpreters. To provide you with the best possible approximation of what the results feel like, we then sent an intern to loiter outside a local Heart-Opening Ceremony to get people’s unfiltered reactions just moments after they awakened to their new place in the universal order.

An interest in ancestral Latin American cosmology has always run right through the music of Ecuadorian music producer Nicola Cruz. His creative process involves an attentive, careful search for the living roots and rituals that are part of South American identity—its Andean and African origins in particular—valuing its rhythms, its oral traditions, its instruments and the energy they transmit. His first record, Prender el Alma (2015) explored the development of the consciousness and spirituality, and how they connect with music. In Siku, his most recent production, Cruz continues this exploration, expanding his vision towards new stories and other cultures as sources of inspiration. A crucial aspect on this journey is his collaboration with other artists from around the world.

The siku is a wind instrument of Andean origin, highly symbolic in ancestral rituals, made up of two separate, complementary parts, the arca and the ira. It is a representation of duality, an essential element of the indigenous world view, associated with involvement and complementarity, far from the binary thinking typical of western societies. That duality is reflected on this record in the coming together of sounds, whether electronic or organic, past or present, local or global. On Siku, Nicola Cruz combines instruments with symbolic, spiritual connotations, such as the sitar, the siku, and the balafon with hints of electronica. Studies of the samba, cumbia and rhythms of African, Andean and Hindu origin are combined with Cruz’s characteristically unpredictable, mystical style.

Oozing urban and tropical, jazz infused electronic sounds, Lucked In is a serious vibe. Formed in Paris in late 2017, the trio draws upon an intercontinental wealth of musical traditions to produce a cutting edge approach to experimental afro sounds, fully DIY punk in its attitude. Poet and rapper Kwame Write (Ghana) conjures the ancestors of afrobeat and calls up ancient Akan aphorisms. His urgent, multi-lingual verses merge with the ethereal vocal melodies of singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Black Rainbow (New Zealand/Ghana, a.k.a. Leila Adu), working in tandem with saxophonist and producer Alejandro Van Zandt-Escobar (Colombia/USA) to produce percussive live electronica creations that remain firmly left of centre. 

The trio met in Paris in 2017 when all three were living there, and organized an impromptu poetry / music jam session in a rum bar in the 11th arrondissement. Drawing from a wide range of experiences as people who have immigrated several times, living between different cultures and having multiple countries which they have called home, difficult to pin-point their identities musical or otherwise.
