Through the Storm

The Painting 

When she was a young girl, she used to smile
Until one day she realized, we’re here just a while
She cried as they laid her daddy in his grave 
From that moment onward, she was never the same
Until she saw his face and heard his voice
His sense of humor made her rejoice
Our days are numbered, she never forgets 
She let him love her and love let her live
She had a baby, they named him Miles
After her grandpa walked her down the aisle 
Miles was born with a foot in the grave
He took his first and last breaths the very same day
She held him close and looked in his eyes
Told him she loved him and kissed him goodbye
She held on for hours, until the nurses came 
Ever so gently, they took Miles away
He went to work like he did every day
But he never came back sadly to say 
It all went wrong and he met his end 
She got a phone call she lost her best friend
Somehow she knew the second he died 
She was the last thing that entered his mind
He had to let go and go toward the light
Now he watches over the love of his life 
Down to the last of her promised days 
It took a long time to get here, she sits and she waits 
She stares at a painting that she bought today
If it’s the last thing she sees, well, she won’t look away
It’s a warm sunny day in a bluebonnet field 
A little creek flows past some rocks on the hill
Off in the distance she can see someone wave
She’d like to go there, one of these days 
Some months have past by, since she grew her wings 
Her relatives gather and go through her things
They box up her dishes and talk about her will
They take down the painting of the bluebonnet field

He used to wake up like his life meant somethin’
Chased his dreams like it was all or nothin’
He’s burned out now, can’t seem to cope

Just tilts his head

Got a kid he ain’t seen in years
She grew up fast while he drowned his tears
Ashes on the table, bugs on the bed
He gave her up for his freedom 
She’ll never mend the damage 
He did to her head 

Used to swear he’d clean it up
Now he’s passed out in that broke down truck 

He’s the walking dead, he lost the fight
Fallin’ through the cracks every Friday night
High enough he fakes a grin
Blackened blood beneath his skin
He wants to die — he’s made his bed 
He hardly speaks, just stares ahead
He’s the walking dead…

He says “One more hit, then I’m through”
But he’s said that shit since ‘1992
He’s at war with no one to fight
Just a flicker in a broken light

He’s the walking dead, no soul to claim
Went out with a whimper 
Like a snuffed out flame 
High enough to dull the pain
And all the sorrow he creates 
He had a life — he had a chance 
A dirty mirror lies like it always did
He’s the walking dead…

It’s held a lot of things
It’s finely made of wood and nails
It’s seen its share of pain…

When David left
I saw his daddy cry
He stumbled to his knees and asked his youngest daughter why

She got a surprise in the mail today
She found out that old box had been on its way
Now it’s out on the front porch and waiting for me
Ol’ David’s wood chest is somethin’ to see

I got up this mornin’ with a guitar in hand
And watched as the rainclouds baptised the land
I’m wonderin’ out loud what David would say
About all this heartache we’re living today

He never made it for the fourth of July
But she says he’s smilin’ somewhere in the sky
Now we’re out on the front porch and baby birds sing
