I first encountered Stefan though through Casa Del Popolo, the Main’s main den of épatering the bourgeoisie since the 90s, when they booked me for what was only the second Days of Steam night after the first at Rye Wax. The old booth was set up like you were in a chapel, dim as hell for me but enough of a remove from the audience without being too removed. They’re a longtime organizer in Montréal activist circles, the mind of @freecityradio, with a CV too long to summarize here but one that shows genuine belief and investment in the causes he champions. I’d seen them years back before we knew each other, as part of the city’s experimental undercurrents, with releases of introspective piano for Howl Arts alongside local luminaries Sam Shalabi and Peter Burton and mainstays d’la marge like Aural Canyon and Beacon Sound. Tapestries of field recordings and plunderphonics, part of a long tradition of musique actuelle in the city without intentionally trying to be so. The mix he sent over is almost entirely as of writing recent pieces, with compositions (what they all feel like more than ‘pieces’ or ‘tracks’) from Berkeley, Brooklyn, Brazil, Houston, Jaffa, Milan, Montréal - the sound of the uncertainty and rage of the now, but never restoring to despondency, moreso righteousness.

We’ve been big fans of Israel Vines ever since hearing him play out in LA warehouses some 15+ years ago. A true veteran of the US underground, Israel spent his formative rave years in Detroit and Chicago in the early 90’s - where he worked at the legendary Gramaphone Records - before going on to become the distinguished producer/DJ we know him as today, with releases on Tresor, Semantica, Cult Figures, and Eye Teeth (sub-label of Detroit’s own @ithqdetroit ).

Both Israel’s productions and sets reveal his encyclopedic knowledge of, and a deep love for, abstract electronic music - always carrying his signature heady sound and flair for bold artistic expression. Israel has played for us several times before at @gradientcampout and other collabs with our homies eternal @printshop.club ❤️ We're thrilled and honored to have his contribution to Palm Reader, our series dedicated to ambient and experimental for wayfinding in stillness. This mix was recorded live at our Palm Reader label preview night (!) on Friday, June 13th, indoors at Plata in Silver Lake. Hard to put a finger on this one. Bit of a dream to get lost in. No peaks and troughs really, just perpetual sequences, rhythms and even words filtering in and out. Joe’s always had a unique approach to djing, where the way things are done is just as important, if not more, than what’s being done. Despite calling the mix ‘off the cuff’, the guy’s seemingly got some backlog of ideas. Here's one, or several.

As well as a Freerotation mainstay, Joe is the other half behind the enigmatic UntilMyHeartStops label. It’s been quiet for a few years but what’s out there is worth your time and timeless in itself. Check it. @untilmyheartstops

Don’t have many rules in life but one of them is that whenever a new mix by Pjenne comes out, to stop what I’m doing immediately and put it on. And probably am not alone here. 

Like many people, Pjenne’s mixes have been go-to’s, essential and always-classy additions to a landscape of noise and clutter. 

Like your favourite mix CD that never left the space•ship stereo. And no matter how many times you listen, it seems to get better and better with each play. They’re timeless, they’re crucial and the amount of care and love poured into each one is apparent as soon as you hear the first blend. 

Often compiled and cooked up over the course of a couple of years, they have the kind of craft and expertise that can only come from doing a weekly radio show for over 6 years, being a staple of her local Naarm scene and being an all-round legend. We’re pleased to report this mix is no different and has been on repeat since it arrived. 

Appreciate this is a bit of a gushy write up, but sometimes you’ve got to say it how it is, and anyone who’s a Pjenne Ultra will understand what a big day this is at space•lab HQ.
