The frontier settlement was brazen in its construction, built so near to the badland dales as it was by those seeking to make their fortunes mining the rich metal deposits of the hills to the west. Many had flocked to the settlement despite the warnings from those native to the lands surrounding the area of the terrifying creatures that lurked behind the hills, the valleys of which were enchanted with a dark and ancient magic that twisted even the most benign of creatures into unrecognizable and monstrous forms. Many of these peoples had long known of the riches of the hills but had stayed their hands from reaping their bounties, fearing what curse or creature might descend upon them should they do so. Yet the greed of these new hapless individuals was unfettered by fear, or perhaps driven by it within those who had lost everything in their previous homes. Regardless of motive, the town of Gildenhills had sprung into being in less than a fortnight, and as many began to strike their picks and shovels into the black earth of the hills beyond the town stories began to abound of fortunes made with a single swing.

For some time, the boom continued. The town’s population exploded, and its bustling saloons and mercantile stores drowned out the sounds that were uttered in the night. It was first the lone miner who worked late, hoping to strike a vein of gold all their own, whose final scream echoed out from within the tunnel he had bored.  Then it was the cattle that had strayed from the herd, found with few bits of still-warm flesh left clinging to bones that bore the indentations of thousands of teeth. When a full camp of miners disappeared and the sheriff’s posse vanished next, those who had abided longest in the area began to recount stories in the shadowed corners of the saloons. They told varmints whose teeth oozed with pestilence, the chittering sound of which could be heard often between the hills. Some, they said, were big enough to kill a man’s dog all of their own, but tales warned much more fervently of the small ones that gathered in swarms. Shaken, they told of watching their comrades drown underneath a tide of fur and fang, exsanguinated almost instantaneously by the thousand cuts that were so quickly inflicted upon them. No rifle nor revolver carried enough ammunition to cull these beasts, and for those subjected to their unearthly hunger there was neither hope of survival nor recourse of revenge. Thus it was, it seemed, that for every ounce of precious ore extracted from these hills there was a price, a price the HILLRATZ would exact in blood.

L 33 returns to EATBRAIN with HILLRATZ, the latest single from the Bulgarian veteran that teems with swarming sonic energy. Whether dispatched through the churning guitars of the B-side “Give a FK” or the skittering percussion of the single’s title track, L 33 delivers a twin pairing of tracks imbued with everything EATBRAIN excels at offering - sinister, unrestrained, and inimitable Neurofunk.

Many ancient texts detail occult experiments into the creation of CHIMERA, fusions of living beings of different species that draw on their various strengths whilst removing their individual flaws. Their existences are a thing of legend, long sought by many but never brought into the light of knowledge by substantiated proof. Indeed, as human knowledge of the world’s species has advanced, such fusions have been relegated largely to the realm of pure fiction, an imaginative but ultimately impossible class of being that cannot exist within the modern, rational world. 

Yet for all of the progress of science and reason that has occurred in the millennia since these tales were first told, our kind has done little to cast off the ignorance to which we are so prone. Could it be not so simply that such beings cannot exist, but further that they exist in forms that we simply have yet to comprehend? For I have heard tell, dear reader, of CHIMERA that walk amongst us amidst our modern world. Masquerading as our friends, our colleagues, and our leaders, their presence goes unnoticed by all but the most discerning of eyes that are paired only with the most open of minds. Born from within the endless intricacies of our data-driven world, these creatures emerge from the depths of the forgotten places upon which that world is built. Deriving consciousness from the near-endless supply of social data our species produces, they are said to manipulate electrical currents to piece together a physical form at the molecular level, a perfect simulacrum for which to host their synthetic minds. It is then that they step forth from within the depths of our server farms, our electrical grids, and our greatest scientific laboratories, their human facades augmented by an inherent connection to the vast sum of our species' collective knowledge. It is sure to be true, dear leader, that these beings have already assumed positions of great power amongst us. Thus it is that I urge you to beware the CHIMERA which walks not upon the paws of the lion nor flies upon the wings of an eagle. Yes, a far more sinister being walks amongst us, dear reader, a CHIMERA that smiles with the perfect teeth of its unerringly human guise.

Shut in behind shuttered blinds, Katelyn took a drag of her cigarette. She didn’t know why she smoked. Perhaps it was just because the other girls did it. Of course, the other girls were those who had so kindly chased her into this hollow out of fear. She was different, she did their work better, her skin was interrupted by alloyed plates and her body couldn’t feel a single pleasure that wasn’t carnal. With a quick puff, Katelyn cursed herself and her designers, who had so brilliantly forbade her from so much of the world with a few lines of code and subcutaneous circuitry connections. Most food tasted the same, she had no sense of smell, and no drug nor the cigarette she smoked could ever help her escape the life that festered in these neon alleyways as they did for everyone else. No, her cyber pleasures were rooted firmly in a single sense - touch, the medium through which she performed her work. 

Katelyn had recently begun to wonder if she’d find pleasure in some of the more perverse applications of that sense. Sexual pleasures had become all but passe to her, but she knew that human brains could easily twist the pathways between joy and terror. She wondered if she’d find pleasure in killing someone. Sometimes, she considered crushing her client’s windpipes. The sinewy synthetic silk that made up her tendons gave her enough strength to do so with only her ring and pinky finger. She imagined the suckering “pop” that might emanate were she to pluck an eyeball from its socket, or the warmth of the blood that might spray forth from an artery severed by the honed edges of her acrylic nails. She was awoken from her daydream by a knock on the door - a client, she supposed. Katelyn took one last long drag of her cigarette and took a single, small delight in the sensation of extinguishing its embered end on the tip of her tongue. Perhaps, she mused as she walked to answer the door, perhaps...

She had been only a babe when the waters had come, not as a flood but as the creep of an endless tide unmoored from its governing moon. From their ancestral village, her kin had fled, chancing their fates amidst the mires that surrounded their homes, which sunk under the rising depths behind them as they fled. She remembered little; the flitting of fireflies, the howling of wolves, and a singular, squelching sound - that of the sodden muck that had swallowed her mother whole, suffocating her in its soggy embrace as with her dying breaths she threw her only child from the reach of its maw. There she had lain unknown amongst the reeds, awaiting an equally certain end. There it was that the crone had discovered her, swaddling her in the sinewy comfort of her DARK EMBRACE.

Many years had passed uncounted since then, and under the crone’s guidance, the child had grown into her fitting progeny, possessing a magical ability of the sort that could only be inherited upon the pain of great loss. Such loss had called the crone to the girl, and now it was such loss that was the source of her magics, marking her in the eyes of many as a maleficent being, an evil creature wrongfully claimed by the crone. Yet the little witch knew a different truth, a baleful tale as old as both of her bloodlines. Such loss was the law of this wretched land, and only in channeling its vile power could she save the next unfortunate soul who was to be swallowed within the acrid bog that she knew as her only home.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN with DARK EMBRACE, an EP set to welcome the label's faithful horde into the embrace of their favored dancefloors as MIZO presents a grimoire of gluttonous basslines and menacing tonalities across the five tracks that lie within.

A shadow fell with bleak weight against the broken cityscape as the towering frame of the scaled behemoth stood above the now desolate metropolis. Cold eyes flickered within the recesses of its heavy skull, surveying its fragmented and twisted domain for any remnants of the fleshy morsels of the living who had once resided there. Beneath its talons shifted stone and metal, groaning under its weight in a cacophanus lament for what had been. It lumbered forward through the carnage of the city, led by its singular mind, barely noticing as each thundering step felled the last vestiges of that once grand city around it. This city on the rocky plain, a pinnacle of the species that built it, now laid to waste by this overwhelming titan of entropy and fury. The towering skyline collapsed around the beast as it effortlessly shifted and demolished with single sweeps of its tail. Issuing a howling, guttural roar of pure, brutal energy, its inhuman rage resounded throughout the city, angular audio reflections bouncing across the broken buildings and striking fear deep into the hearts of those who still clung to a wretched life. They haunted the shadows, hiding from the its ravenous hunger, hidden away in fear amongst the crumbling concrete. With a burst of sudden fury the beast twisted, striking at a skyscraper and tearing it open, spilling the mess of its insides and the once precious multitude of human things across the streets below. But missing was the softness of the meal it craved. It lumbered onward, the strange paths which this insignificant species had laid, leading it through the decaying land... a constant drive for flesh feeding its voracious desire - that endless, unfillable void. Its stride echoed with the ominous assurance of recurrence, its cycle of consumption would begin anew.
