Ziúr’s music has always been difficult to classify. A longtime fixture in Berlin’s nightlife, the musician, producer and DJ has cut through decades of threads to arrive on a sound that accurately represents her journey. She’s sung, played guitar and drums and reduced club music to a burning cinder; with “Antifate”, her third album under the Ziúr moniker, she approaches electronic music without any preciousness or reverence to genre.
2019’s acclaimed “ATØ” re-introduced songs to her canon, contorting her vocals over an undulating electronic backdrop. On “Antifate”, she takes this idea further, pushing abstracted pop forms into mists of digital euphoria and extracting unexpected instrumental flourishes from collapsing clouds of distorted rhythm. Electronic instrumentation is melted into acoustic sounds and vice-versa, creating a breathing organic universe that’s entirely Ziúr’s.

“Antifate” is an abstract reference to the mythical land of Cockaigne, a utopia where wine flows freely and houses are made of cake, that provided escapist fantasy for medieval peasants. As the space between our private worlds widens, this fantasy becomes alluring once more - a place where we feel free, with the people who allow us that freedom. With this in mind, Ziúr crafts a soundtrack that’s fantastical and magical, hinged on the idea of closeness and connection at a time when distance is mandatory.

Ghostly voices echo wordlessly over clattering beats and dubwise bass on opener ‘Alive, Unless?’, while the album’s title track sings a more epic fanfare, with a chorus of voices echoing into glittering synthesizer pearls and volcanic kicks. “Antifate” is almost even theatrical at times, something never more evident than on the Talk Talk-esque ‘Fringe Casual’ with its dreamy piano and plucked bass and on closing track ‘The Carry’, where flute is introduced into Ziúr’s rapidly expanding narrative.

It’s tempting to say that this is the album Ziúr has been destined to make, but “Antifate” rejects this concept. Rather, this is the album that Ziúr needed to make now, surrounded by the people that have been able to offer her the place to do it. In mapping out her mythical paradise, Ziúr has produced an album that is deeply tender and inescapably human. It’s an album about freedom, and she has never sounded so free.
The album is mixed by James Ginzburg & mastered by Rashad Becker, featuring artwork by Stefan Fähler.

Our mix series continues with Moscow-based artist Ушко. In 2020, Dasha Korotkova debuted her Silver Hits album, later starting a collaboration with producer Moa Pillar. After that, she joined the roster of his label ПИР. Other collaborations include WULFFLUW XCIV and a recent performance with kedr livanskiy. Also, she has participated in Fields, Castalia, JagerVibes, and Resonance events.

Nerd Syndicate began as a small collective in early 2020. This project was originally conceived as a way to turn the spotlight on the outcast side of electronic music scene. Some of the artists, whose works are featured in this compilation, are making their debut here, while some are more established, but, nonetheless, share the same outsider vision as we do. More experienced artists might draw attention to the emerging ones. We lift each other up. 

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact genre spectrum of the release. This body of work is an infantile collection of broken sounds and split perception experiences. We are all drawn to reinventing syncopated riddims and finding pleasure in haunting soundscapes, detailed sound designs.  

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this compilation underwent a significant change. All the profits from this release will be donated to an NGO helping people in Ukraine. We also welcome you to donate to the organization directly.

The new guest of the “ethereal mix” series is singer and producer from Moscow Veronika Steklova, who publishes music by the name MC Ulybochka.

Nika began to engage in musical creativity while still studying at school. She released her first tracks as Nika Boginya at the age of 13-15, and only in 2019 she made her debut under her current pseudonym with the album “Ччч звучит мягко” (“Chchch zvuchit miagko”)

Over the next 4 years, her discography was replenished with the mini-album “Осенний грув” (“Osennii Gruv”, 2020) and the long-plays “Реальная магия» (“Real’naya magiia”, 2021), presented at “Nisha”, and the latest at the moment “Glamour&parkour”, which was released on the “Label” platform in late last month.

In addition, Veronica took part in the creation of the LP “Месседж” («Messedzh”, 2023) by Dima Komarov (Polska Octavia) and “Прозрачность соленых ресниц” («Prozrachnost solyonih resnitz”, 2022) by Kolya Dolgov (Paita). Both artists were also featured in our mixes series.

For the seventieth episode of our “ethereal mixes” series we invited performer and producer from St. Petersburg Diana Kovaleva a.k.a xvostik.

At the beginning of September the label /rakurs/ released Diana’s second album “Forest Eyes”. Her song “Sleep Demon” was supplemented with a video clip from Polina Yarosh and Artem Agafonov.

Last year she shared her debut full-length “Koshki” on the platform. We also recommend listening to artist’s another work - the mini-album “Neserieznost” (2021) from the Welofi catalog.

Earlier this fall, she recorded a joint composition “Pomogi mne vyshit” with Pochtischastie from the new long-play and prepared the track “Tak bolshe nelzia” for the compilation “Garden of Beatriz: Enchanted” by the Beatriz community.
