Ex Wiish is a fleeting dream. The new musical project of Ben Shirken, a sound artist and composer based in New York City.

Shirken is the founder of record label & performance series 29 Speedway which features improvisational electronic music, 4-point guerrilla sound installations, live multimedia performances and has hosted Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Poncili Creación, Debit, Pent, James K and various other New York-based artists. Shirken also produces for and plays modular synths in acclaimed free jazz group ‘Nu Jazz’ with Dan Orlowski of electronic hardcore staple Deli Girls.

Their debut record, “Shards of Axel'', is out on Incienso June 23, 2023. Born from a story-based video game composition; the listener finds themselves as the disoriented main player respawned into a harrowing, metallic landscape, wandering through cable ridden labyrinths, caught in progress traps as digital noises grind past submerged cityscapes.

++ PRESENTATION ++
We are happy to introduce a new format to our catalogue - Resonance! For each installment in the series, two or more members of the Global URL Nation spontaneously bond and collaborate on a multi-track project, such as an EP or audiovisual piece.

For the first edition, we warmly welcome POL100 & Cecco Meraviglia for Espiazione, a journey of soul purification and an exploration of mind-body dualism partly inspired by Dante’s Inferno. Thought and produced as music videos, it gathers the two Italian artists around a common project to be seen and heard. 

Over 5 audiovisual acts, Espiazione combines organic textures, intriguing sound designs and synthetic soundscapes with distorted symbols, particle shapes, morphing glitches and virtual mirages.

The opening act, Preludio, is an anxious and tension-filled ambient dive into the universal themes of death and mind-body separation. It then proceeds to a reinterpretation of Dante’s hell, purgatory and heaven with Fluido, a noise-filled suffocating descent into infernal circles and arhythmic abysses ; Solido, an unstable call for tranquility, a climbing towards purification and cleansing through textured terror, despair and deadly sins ; and Gassoso, a bright and ecstatic atmospheric liberation carried by graceful pads, celestial elements and angelic figures. Expanding Dante’s representation, the release closes with Rinascita, a shimmering and joyful exploration of rebirth as seen by various cultures, returning the soul to a material and earthly dimension.

Experienced as a whole, Espiazione walks a fine balance between life, death and rebirth, to provide us with a touching emotional journey, a subtle celebration of the impermanent cycles of life.

Nerd Syndicate began as a small collective in early 2020. This project was originally conceived as a way to turn the spotlight on the outcast side of electronic music scene. Some of the artists, whose works are featured in this compilation, are making their debut here, while some are more established, but, nonetheless, share the same outsider vision as we do. More experienced artists might draw attention to the emerging ones. We lift each other up. 

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact genre spectrum of the release. This body of work is an infantile collection of broken sounds and split perception experiences. We are all drawn to reinventing syncopated riddims and finding pleasure in haunting soundscapes, detailed sound designs.  

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this compilation underwent a significant change. All the profits from this release will be donated to an NGO helping people in Ukraine. We also welcome you to donate to the organization directly.

“For Barney, Who Was A Bad Dog, But A Good Boy, And Very Much Loved.” comes from Brooklyn-based Dekalb Works, the collaborative project of Austin Peru (Vision Fortune) & Daniel Creahan (Sweat Equity / Alien D). The record summarizes a series of experimentations between live performance contexts and sample-heavy collage work. Since starting their residency on Radio alHara, Dekalb Works found themselves drawn to the act of performing, whether as a live act or DJing, and the space between these two often overly rigid modes.

“For Barney…” draws heavily on the sonic palette of American country and western music, treated through the lens of heavy studio processing and the production techniques of dub, ambient, and trip-hop. Recording hours-long live improvisations with guitar, piano, or drum machines and samplers, they pillaged these sessions as source material. Whereas previous work focused on the voice and the interaction of text, voice and music, these recordings pulled from the sounds of musicians playing together in a room. The arrangement process remains the same, chopping and manipulating small samples and momentary gestures into dense, rhythmic collages.

Akashic Records brings you the debut collection of mournful but vital, club blurred industrial electronics by Glasgow's Kübler Ross (Dave Clark, Craig Clark & Katie Shannon). 

Stage one: Denial - cling to a false, preferable reality. 

Kübler-Ross take their name from Swiss psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross. During an extraordinary career she worked with Holocaust survivors and pioneered palliative care but is mainly known for proposing the (now largely discredited) theory of The Five Stages of Grief. Her latter years saw her become interested in near death experiences and contacting the dead. 

Stage two: Anger - "Why me? It's not fair!"; "How can this happen to me?"; "Who is to blame?"; "Why would this happen?". 

You might hear echoes of Suicide. In 1978 synth-punks Suicide played the Glasgow Apollo, supporting The Clash. An axe was thrown at Alan Vega by someone in the audience after his taunt that “You fuckers have to live through us to get to the main band”. 

A mood of ferocious and manic uneasiness prevails on these recordings. 

Stage three: Bargaining - Usually, the negotiation for an extended life is made in exchange for a reformed lifestyle. 

You might hear echoes of Deutsch Amerikansiche Freundschaft’s Die Kleinen und die Bösen , one side studio and most of the other side live. 

Polished anarchy of abused instruments, brutal rhythms and wailing electronics. 

Raw sophistication. Nihilistic joy. 

The mysterious insouciance and seductive belligerence of Katie Shannon’s vocals battle and flirt with motorik percussion and luscious but menacing synths. 

Stage four: Depression - the individual despairs at the recognition of their mortality. In this state, the individual may become silent, refuse visitors and spend much of the time mournful and sullen. 

A Gloomy rapture of moral distress in Gothic latex. 

Kübler-Ross established a headquarters called Shanti Nilaya—”ultimate home of peace” in Sanskrit. Its purpose was to investigate psychic healing and administer “life, death and transition” workshops that involve psychodrama and such purging acts as beating a telephone book with a rubber hose. 

Stage five: Acceptance - individuals embrace mortality or inevitable future. 

Appearing at sessions in darkened rooms at Shanti Nilaya these “entities” assumed human form and engaged in sexual relations with church members. “How is it,” one asked, “that an entity, a pure spirit, has cigarette breath?”. 

You might hear echoes of Throbbing Gristle. Deformed pulses, distorted voices, drenched with reverb, sweat, ectoplasm and Buckfast. 
Electro brutalist pop sensibilities entangled with metal and flesh and machine and flesh. 

Sultry screaming and amputated yearning in a torrid love affair with death. Nightclub thanatology. 

The dead are much wiser than us.
