"If there is one event that I have had the fortune of playing that feels like it seeps and oozes with the same spirit that motivates the wonderful mix series Beyond/Below, it is the annual ambient gathering, Chillits, held in Northern California each year. For that reason, I am honored to have a live recording of my set, recorded on site at the gathering in September 2024, welcomed here alongside so many brilliant ambient mixes. Grounded in a memory of traveling to Avebury with my father, this offering is dedicated to my brother, all of the hard-working free-spirits that tirelessly organize radical musical gatherings across the US and around the world, and to the recently departed Max Carpenter.

As expected for an event like this, the playlist is an approximation and likely has many gaps and unexpected additions. Mastering by the one with the metal plate, Jonathan James Carr."

TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ AAKAARA

AAKAARA is a London based producer, and visual artist working in mediums of screen printing, audiovisuals, and graphics. 
His taste in music and production style has been described as “sounding like a defunct cargo train.” Weirdness & thoughtful toughness are core sonic principles for AAKAARA. All formats of his work (visual, sonic) are conceptually focused on black hole dynamics, asemic writing, detritus, & distortion.  
He has released music on Silva Electronics, Degenerate Matter (2019), an album entitled Obsidian Promises (2023), and a dark ambient audiovisual album called Metasilence (2019) on Ghunghru. His latest release, Petroglyph I is a new direction in which he creates intricate ceramic CD case artifacts as a physical counterpart to the hard hitting, distortion-coated techno. 
He also runs a party in London called Exquisite Corpse, which showcases local artists who each bring a radically different expression of techno and beyond, ranging from broken, hypnotic, leftfield, noise, groove, body music, and industrial. The intent of these parties are to contrast the monotony of sub-genre specific nights and re-embrace eclecticism within a single evening. These parties are also paired with a parallel screen printing practice that is integral to the overall building of the graphic-artifact world.

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.

“That’s the Body” (1983) and “On And Off” (1983) are first-ever releases. On side B, we treat you to new versions of “Mort Automatique” (1981) and “Frutta”(1982), previously found on the now expensive “30th Anniversary: 1980-1983” album, released by Domestica in 2013.
