In the late 1990s, the ghettotech genre was emerging from the forefront of electronic experimentation in one of its capitals, Detroit, and ghetto house got electrified and thrown in a blender with garage elements and club bass. When DJ Rashad and the Teklife crew started to spawn a new generation of ghetto-inspired club DJs in the Chicago and Midwestern US regions, their presence also brought attention back to the long-underground ghettotech scene. One of ghettotech’s early innovators, Julian Shamou, finally got his due when Disclosure sampled one of his tunes for their 2015 single “Bang That.” Since then, Julian’s resurged under the Detroit's Filthiest alias, putting out new music on the Moveltraxx and Defected label, while showing an unceasing devotion to his original craft. The Baghdad-born, Detroit-made musician made it clear in his interview with us that he won’t let himself be driven solely by new rhythms: this is 30 minutes of old-school, unfaltering club music, straight from Detroit’s Filthiest – enjoy.
