Philipp Otterbach is a German artist, DJ, and electronic music producer known for his experimental and atmospheric approach to sound.
His musical journey began in the underground scene of Düsseldorf, where he became involved with the influential club Salon des Amateurs—a space recognized for its avant-garde take on club music. It was there that Otterbach developed his distinct style, one that prioritizes emotional storytelling over conventional dancefloor functionality.
His productions often feature analog synths, field recordings, guitars, primal percussion, and ambient effects, forming dense and cinematic sound collages. Listening to his work feels like entering a sonic dreamscape—rich in mood, memory, and quiet tension. There's a strong narrative quality to his music, as if each track were part of an imaginary film score.

Lou is the host of one of our favourite ambient shows @transience-archive which airs monthly on Berlin’s Cashmere Radio to provide listener with a much needed relief from anxiety and together with marum they host sonic-seances under the name @infinity-rug 🫧

Lou believes in the transformative potential of sound and the importance of deep listening. Whether that is listening to each other, our needs or to the sounds around us. In their sets they often explore the sonic landscapes of the in-between, where the listeners perspective dictates the experience, yet holds them in a warm embrace to invite a deep dialogue with the listening body-mind.

like many of us, my heart has been red with grief-rage witnessing the ever-escalating genocide in Gaza. this mix starts with an invocation for the liberation of the Palestinian people, a struggle that omits none of us if we wish to be truly free. 

the slowly evolving sound journey takes us through several realms and phases of introspection, ghosts of the past lingering in melodies they never heard. sonic energies condensing and expanding, offering spaciousness for contemplation and being with whatever arises.

meandering through earthly realms, through the riparian zone, swamps, and forests we meet with mournful spirits in her gut, casting our attention on the multiplicities of loss we are facing. yet in the shade there are angels, who remind us that we have been doing this for many, many lifetimes. ‘keep on’ they seem to whisper. 

eventually we arrive to the sunset inside, where the Grand River’s winds meet the horizon, guiding our gaze upward toward the night sky where the mysteries of the celestial bodies radiate, Lyra’s visions casting an empowerment spell for all those who listen. 

may we each grow ever surer of our paths, finding creative and yet unimaginable ways to continue our collective struggle for the liberation of all sentient entities, until we are all free.

A Path Through Haze: 07 08 2025

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

RA.1000 Terre Thaemlitz (AKA DJ Sprinkles)

I always feel there is something between “ancient craftsmanship” and “electronic music”. Hard to articulate in words but maybe this mixtape can say something about that. Like, what electronic music could be like if it was crafted from an era when life has not been sped up. This mixtape is also a sketchbook of the debut album I’ve been working on. Electronic music that is a latent interpolation of ancient jade ware + club + Carl Jung + a beloved drum machine.

Xiao-Wan is a percussionist and producer, lives and works between London and Chengdu. She is one half of the research-based music project TWEE with multidisciplinary artist Malou.
